The Legacy of Chicano Poets

Chicano/hispanic/latino poetry has a long history and can be traced back to the Mexican-Americans in the United States. Chicano and Hispanic/Latino poets have been writing in English for over a century. In the 1980s, Chicano poets began to write in Spanish. They are often called “the lost generation of poets” because their work has been lost to the historical record. This seminar will explore the history of Chicano Poetry and the legacy of the Chicano poet.
In the spring of 2007, I was asked to write a poem for the poetry reading at the Hispanic Poetry Center. The poem I wrote was titled “A Chicano Poem.” It was about my grandfather, who was born in California and raised in El Paso, Texas. In the poem, I spoke about how our culture has always been a part of our community. I talked about how my grandfather was a hard worker and how he loved his family. His work ethic and strong family values were what I learned from him. My grandfather died in 2006.
Chicano/Hispanics/Latinos are Americans of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Central American, South American or other Hispanic descent. Chicano poets have been at the forefront of the United States poetry movement, and Chicano poetry is still a vibrant and important part of American poetry today. As a contemporary form of poetry it can be considered the third major generation of Latino poetry in the United States.
The Chicano Movement

Chicano/Hispanics/Latinos are a diverse group of people in the United States. They have been the target of racism and discrimination for decades. Today, however, there are more Latinos living in the U.S. than at any other time in history. In this collection, poems by Latinos are presented. The poems in this anthology are written in both Spanish and English.
Chicano/hispanic/latino poetry is a relatively new movement within the broader category of Hispanic/Latino Literature. Chicano literature and Hispanic literature, in general, have been the subject of intense criticism and/or praise from scholars and critics for many years. One of the most prominent criticisms has been that Chicano and Hispanic writers have not been able to fully integrate into the mainstream literary canon.
Chicano/Hispanics/Latinos are the largest ethnic group in the United States. They are also the biggest minority group, having made up nearly 5 percent of the total U.S. population.
