The Chi-Phat commune is located deep within the Cardamom and Elephant Mountains at Koh Kong Province, south-west Cambodia . It is known for having a community based ecotourism (CBET) project.

The commune consists four villages:Chi-Phat, Komlot, Chom-Sla and T'k La'o. The commune population is estimated around 3,000 inhabitants (2010). The residents makes their living mainly out of agriculture, fishing and tourism.

Similarly to the neighboring, younger Trapeang Rung project, it is known for its Community Based Ecotourism (CBET) [1] project that helps locals benefit from tourism instead of hunting animals in the Cardamom Mountains.

Chi Phat is located on the Stung Phipot (Phipot River) about 20 kilometer upstream from Andong Teuk village on Highway 48 – the main highway linking Phnom Penh with Thailand, through the provincial capital of Koh Kong.

To get to Chi Phat you will have to travel to Andong Teuk village by bus and from Andoung Teuk to Chi Phat, eitherΒ :

The bus should drop you just in front of moto-dop / boat

Transportation to Andong Teuk village:

Remember to ask your bus driver to drop you off at Andong Teuk village!

Hire a guide from the CBET office. They will arrange trips for trekking, mountain biking, kayaking, etc, complete with equipment, food and guides. Because CBET is owned by the community, all proceeds go to the community.

Chi Phat is on the foot of Cardamom mountains. Don't expect to be in the jungle (unless you go for a longer trek), but rather in wild countryside.

Note that all trekking tour prices are targeted for 4 person groups (6p for mountain bikes), and CBET will find / try to find other people for you. It should be fairly easy if you are two, but depending on which trek you want to do, it may take a a few days if you are travelling alone.

Prices depends on trek, but are around $50 per person for a 3 day trek (assuming there are 4 persons)
Note that CBET adds a 7% "admission fee" to all prices.

You can also rent a mountain bike and go e.g. to O Malu waterfall without a guide. CBET rents very good mountain bikes for $10/dayΒ ; other guesthouse may rent some bike cheaper.
Ask your guesthouse to write in khmer the name of the waterfall (or other point of interest) you're heading to, to helps asking your way (there are few/no signs except for the first waterfall)

CBET restaurant provides breakfast, lunch and diner.
Note that at CBET you pay everything on checkout - this is error prone, don't complicate things by trying to pay after each lunchΒ !

There are also other restaurants in the main street, and depending where you stay you may have very good dinner at your guesthouse

The CBET office will arrange local options for home stay, guesthouse, and bungalows. All fees are collected by CBET and distributed to the community. The home stay and guesthouses are in a rotation system so that all families get equal opportunity to earn money from tourism.
There are options ranging from $4 to $7
There are now several bungalows in the village including Vanna, Cardamom Cottages, Mein Mein, Sunbear and Firefly from between $15-$20
