Chet Holmgren Shines in Rookie Season, Proving Doubters Wrong

Oklahoma City, OK – Chet Holmgren, the 7-foot-1 phenom who missed his entire first NBA season due to injury, has silenced critics with a dominant rookie campaign, establishing himself as a cornerstone for the Oklahoma City Thunder.

After being selected second overall in the 2022 NBA Draft, Holmgren suffered a Lisfranc injury during a pro-am game, sidelining him for what would have been his debut year. However, the former Gonzaga star has returned with a vengeance, averaging 18.4 points, 9.1 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks per game while shooting an impressive 52% from the field and 39% from three-point range.

Holmgren’s unique blend of shot-blocking, perimeter shooting, and ball-handling has made him a nightmare matchup for opponents. Alongside fellow young stars Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jalen Williams, he has helped propel the Thunder to playoff contention in the loaded Western Conference.

Despite early concerns about his slender frame, Holmgren has bulked up and demonstrated durability, playing in 78 games this season. His performances have made him a frontrunner for Rookie of the Year, though he faces stiff competition from San Antonio’s Victor Wembanyama.

'I’ve always believed in my ability,' Holmgren said after a recent 30-point, 12-rebound performance. 'The injury was a setback, but I used that time to get better. Now, I’m just focused on helping this team win.'
