Claim: A cheerleader performs a sexual favor on the members of one of her school’s sports teams, then is rushed to a hospital where doctors pump her stomach free of an astonishing amount of semen.

Alan Fine believes this legend to have originated in the early 1970s, a time when women in American were demanding equal rights — rights that many males found threatening. Thus, according to Fine, this legend came about as adolescent males’ way of simultaneously expressing desire for cheerleaders, the “symbol of virtuous young womanhood” and “highly desirable sexual possessions” while disapproving of women’s newly liberated roles.
readers pushes the dates back a bit further, reporting hearing this legend in 1967 about a fraternity brother’s date who had taken on the entire frat house with similar medical results.
The story shows, among other things, how the male ego can perpetuate mistaken assumptions, namely that the amount of the ejaculate supposedly swallowed by the cheerleader is routinely wildly overestimated. Tellers of the tale describe the amount in terms of pints, quarts, or gallons, yet at an average ejaculation of 4 cubic centimeters, the product of an entire football team (22 players), would tote up to just under three fluid ounces, about 3/8 of a cup.
A similar tale, driving home the decadence of rock stars , features any number of music celebrities in place of the overindulging cheerleader.

In pro games (and some college games) I’m sure it can be. The women are sent out there to dance in skimpy uniforms to appeal to the mostly male audience. Professional cheerleaders are also paid very little, partly due to how little they are respected.
Game-day cheerleaders in general are often seen as pretty faces to appeal to the audience and to support the male athletes. At my high school, my cheer team was expected to be at school events, buy gifts for football players, and help out, while we were hardly respected as a team, not treated as a legitimate sport or club, and were not even given a place on campus to practice. For the entire season, we were forced to rent out a local gymnastics gym to hold our practices. On game days, we were not allowed to bring our equipment onto campus—we had to bring them directly from the parking lot to the stadium, which was a hassle for those of us who didn’t have cars or couldn’t get it from home between schooltime and the game.
When you say cheerleading in your question, you’re probably referring to the types of situations I just mentioned, when cheerleaders are treated as less than and just a pretty faces. I definitely think there’s a lot of improvement to be made in those areas, but that’s not all of it.
NFL cheerleading is definitely the worst part. There are rarely, if ever, men on the squads and the women are meant to be there for sexual appeal. IMO, NFL cheer should change to be more like college cheer—with stunts, tumbling, reasonable uniforms, and more men on the teams.
Many of those cheerleaders are not happy with the way they are treated either, but they have reasons to do what they do. In this situation, the women are the victims. The people who demand the cheerleaders (like lustful men, for example) should be the ones to blame.
On the other hand, forms of cheer like competitive cheer barely involve objectification at all. Competitive cheer is just like gymnastics. Athletes are judged by their skill, not their looks, and do the sport because they love it.

It is far too easy for predators to end up coaching cheerleaders, and take advantage of the situation. Sexual assault commonly happens to cheerleaders, whether from the coaches, or players on the sports teams they’re cheering for, and it’s too often brushed under the rug, so as not to hurt the coaches career or the football player’s future. Not to mention, as I said above, cheerleading is dangerous . The maneuvers they perform can easily cause serious injury. These girls are getting thrown in the air, lifted up off the ground, and more, and they can only rely on the strength of their teammates to prevent them from being seriously injured or worse.
As such, I have mixed feelings on cheerleading. If someone wants to be a cheerleader, and they aren’t being pressured into it, then more power to them. However, I think cheerleading needs to be examined very closely. Coaches and students need to be held to a higher standard, and cheerleaders need to be given more support, to keep them safe. I don’t think we need to eliminate cheerleading. But we also don’t need any more traumatized young women. So as it stands, cheerleading needs an overhaul.
I’m sure it’s fixable, but first, the problems need to be genuinely acknowledged, rather than swept under the rug or pulled out as a gotcha in arguments about feminism.
