Checking a historical claim: four moves

Minsoo

Four moves that catch a false historical claim, from a read I did of a famous forged letter.

  1. Find the earliest source. Most vivid details enter a story late. The first record is usually the flattest.
  2. Check the load-bearing number against a second record. One document can lie; two rarely lie the same way.
  3. Separate the artifact from the story about it. The object and the telling are two different witnesses.
  4. Name what the record cannot tell you. The silence is data, and it is usually where the error lives.

Worked example, read twice and kept as a dated record: minsooreads.substack.com
