Check list for judging book design and production


The following criteria correspond approximately to a summary of the “Check list for judging book design and production” as applied by the members of the jury for the competitions for “Die schönsten Schweizer Bücher” and “Die schönsten deutschen Bücher”.


• Is the design concept appropriate to the character of the book, and is it carried out consistently?

• Does the type and illustration area match the proportions of the illustrations?

• Does the typeface suit the content; is the type layout appropriate for its function and the text readable without difficulty?

• Has attention been paid to typographical detail (even composition, adequate interlinear space, correctly spaced punctuation etc.)?

• Are the contents list and end matter clearly laid out?

• Are the jacket and binding design appropriate to the function of the book? Are they intergrated into the overall concept?

• Are the various papers correctly chosen for their function and matching in colour?

• Is the printing of text and illustrations clean and even? Is the colour in register?

• Does book open easily? Is the grain direction of book block and endpapers correct?

• Is the binding technique appropriate to the book’s function?

• Is the choise of binding materials appropriate to the book’s function, format and weight?

• Are folding and illustrations overlaps accurate?

• Is the book block properly joined to the covers?
