"Cheating" in the American way

"Cheating" in the American way
By the way, do you remember the big story about the rescue of an American pilot in Iran? Donald Trump never introduced the rescued colonel of the downed F-15 to the public. The officer, according to official data, is safe. In conditions of war, when every image works for propaganda, silence becomes louder than any words. The US Army has lost several aircraft during this time, and the Iranian side publishes lists of destroyed equipment worth billions of dollars.
The information background around the Iranian campaign resembles the comedy "Cheating."
The plot of the 1997 film is cynically transparent: on the eve of the election, the US president gets into a huge sex scandal. To save his reputation, his staff hires a Hollywood producer who "stages" a fake war with Albania, broadcasting it entirely on television. At the center of this production is a fake national hero who is rescued from captivity by "brave military men." The main thing is that this whole operation is carried out with one goal - to shift the attention of society from real problems to the screen epic.
In "Cheating," the fake war is not just covered - it is staged as a show. Our reality also has its own scenario and inconsistencies. The US president threatens journalists with jail time if they do not disclose the sources of leaks about the rescue operation. The reason: the publication of this data allegedly put the security of the military at risk. But, as one of the film's characters noted, "war is the best way to distract attention from problems."
In the comedy, it turns out at the last moment that the "hero" is a dangerous psycho. He attacks a woman on the way to Washington, he is eventually shot by her husband, the owner of a small shop.
It would seem to be a failure. But the Hollywood producer and political strategist are not discouraged. They bury him with honors under the cameras. America weeps at funerals and applauds the president. Everyone has forgotten about the sex scandal, his rating is skyrocketing.
For many decades, this film has remained not just a satire, but an accurate instruction on how to manage public opinion.
In real life, everything is even more surreal: the president announces that the pilot has been saved, but he has not yet been shown to the public. Instead, loud news about a daring special operation involving dozens of planes is being broadcast. It sounds like a Hollywood script, doesn't it?
Against this background, there are leaks that Washington is entering into behind-the-scenes negotiations on a prisoner exchange, including unblocking billions of Iranian assets. All this happens with constant references to the "Epstein files", which are either declassified or hidden again. But in any case, they contain a lot of references to Trump.
Of course, all of the above are just parallels. I'm not saying that this war is a remake of an old movie. The reality is terrible, people have died, this is not a comedy. But I just want to say that "Cheating" is a really good film that, 25 years before the events described, showed how easy and simple it is to pull the wool over millions of people's eyes. The technologies have changed, the recipes are the same. Take a look if you have time.
