It’s always exciting to see which familiar faces will return when a sequel to a classic movie is greenlit.
On the other hand, it’s just as intriguing to learn which faces won’t be returning.
When a sequel to Tony Scott’s iconic 1986 movie Top Gun was announced, fans were comfortable in knowing that Tom Cruise would be back to reprise the central role of Pete “Maverick” Mitchell.
It was also announced that Val Kilmer would be back on the scene as the legendary “Iceman”. However, viewers were curious to see if Maverick’s love interest would return.
Now that Joseph Kosinski’s critically acclaimed sequel is finally here, the film is encouraging many to ask what happened to Charlie in Top Gun…
Played by Kelly McGillis, we first meet Charlie in the original when Maverick and Goose head out to a bar, determined to party the night away.
Charlie catches Maverick’s eye and he proceeds to try and woo her, opening up the floor to a song and dance – quite literally – in an attempt to impress. However, his advances don’t exactly work out and he continues on into the night with his wingman.
The next day, on the other hand, he discovers that she’s Charlotte “Charlie” Blackwood, an astrophysicist and Top Gun instructor. She gradually begins to take an interest in Maverick romantically.
Unfortunately, things grow complicated for Maverick in the wake of a personal tragedy and they break up briefly before eventually getting back together by the end of the movie.
Fast forward to the events of Top Gun: Maverick decades later and Charlie isn’t so much as mentioned. We never know what happens to her after the events in Top Gun. Yet, it’s arguable that being as ambitious as she is, Charlie may have just decided to focus on her career down the line.
Despite sparks flying between the two, there was nothing concrete to suggest that the couple would be together forever.
Instead, Top Gun: Maverick introduces a new love interest called Penny (played by Jenniffer Connelly). It’s established that they also have a history, reinforcing the idea that Maverick has simply gone on to have many Charlie’s in his life since the original, so to speak.
Turning to speculation, it’s likely that Charlie is a high-ranking official.
So high, in fact, that she hasn’t needed any direct contact with Maverick for a long time; we learn in the new movie that Maverick has basically failed to achieve the mobility in his field that was expected of him, despite being a great pilot.

Although the reason for Charlie’s absence in the 2022 sequel isn’t addressed within the film, the actress who played Charlie has revealed that she wasn’t asked to reprise the iconic role in Top Gun: Maverick.
The 64-year-old actress previously told Entertainment Tonight that it was because of her age and appearance. “I’m old and I’m fat and I look age-appropriate for what my age is, and that is not what that whole scene is about,” she argued.
Despite this, that doesn’t mean that she wasn’t thrilled for Jennifer Connelly earning the part, as she added that she’s “so glad she got that opportunity” during the interview.
Top Gun: Maverick is now in theaters.
