The studio focuses on creating distinctive, artful games, with previous titles including Cat Detective Albert Wilde, adventure game The Minims, and puzzle game Reky. Reky was featured by Apple as an “Incredible Indie” and received a merit award at the #EBGE2020 awards, highlighting the studio’s creative impact. beyondthosehills is currently developing PLACEGROUND, a space-building simulation game that enables players to design their own spaces in striking architectural environments. Team members collaborate internationally, combining technical and artistic skills to deliver original interactive experiences.
Role Description As a Character Animator Intern, you will contribute to the visual storytelling and character performance for beyondthosehills’ current and upcoming video game projects. This internship is fully remote and unpaid, and is designed to provide hands-on experience in a professional game development environment. Day-to-day tasks may include helping set up and refine character rigs, creating and polishing animation cycles for gameplay and cutscenes, and assisting with basic motion capture data cleanup under guidance from senior team members. You will collaborate with artists, designers, and programmers to ensure that character animations support gameplay, narrative, and overall aesthetic goals. The intern may also support storyboard preparation and previsualization for key scenes, while participating in feedback sessions and implementing revisions to improve animation quality and consistency.
Qualifications
* Foundational skills in character Animation and Storyboarding, with an understanding of timing, posing, and visual storytelling.
* Basic experience with Rigging and Autodesk Maya or similar 3D animation software for setting up and adjusting character rigs.
* Exposure to Motion Capture workflows, including importing, analyzing, and refining mocap data, is beneficial.
* Strong visual sense, attention to detail, and ability to follow art direction and technical guidelines.
* Interest in video games and interactive media, especially character-driven experiences.
* Ability to work collaboratively in a remote, international team, communicate clearly, and respond constructively to feedback.
* Self-motivated, organized, and able to manage time effectively in an internship environment.
* Relevant studies or portfolio in animation, game art, or related fields are highly valued.
