SAT Exam 2021: Registration, Eligibility, Fee, Exam Dates, Exam Centers, Syllabus, Exam Pattern, Results, Score, and Preparation Tips
Study Abroad Expert | Updated On 22 Apr `21
SAT or Scholastic Aptitude Test is a standardized test conducted by the College board for international candidates aspiring to pursue undergraduate studies abroad especially in US. The two main areas of SAT are evidence-based reading and writing, math, and an optional writing section. Candidates need to answer 154 questions in 3 hours. The SAT score range is 400-1600 which are used widely for seeking admission to undergraduate programs mainly in the USA. SAT exam is conducted 7 times annually depending upon the region and is held at least 5 times a year in most countries. Candidates need to pay an SAT exam fee of $101 without the optional essay and $117 with the optional essay.
The upcoming SAT exam date is on 8th May 2021. Candidates can still register for SAT by opting for a late registration date of 20th April (for mailed registration) and 27th April (for online/phone registrations).
Note: Due to the COVID 19 outbreak, SAT exam centers in India are not functional. Most universities or grad schools are teaching remotely, therefore SAT exam scores or ACT scores are waived off as standard admission requirements. Most Ivy League schools changed their policies for admission and declared that due to unavoidable circumstances, students can submit applications without SAT scores.
According to the announcement of the College Board made on 19th January 2021, the SAT essay section has been exempted and the order is applicable from June 2021 administration. SAT Subject test is also removed as an exam pattern but only for the U.S. The Collegeboard has decided to administer SAT online so that students can write the exam from any part of the world ensuring health safety. Collegeboard has been trying to administer a flexible test pattern for SAT. It is quite possible that a new section would be added as the subject matter of SAT exam 2021.

There are two types of SAT exams – SAT Test and SAT Subject Test. While the SAT test is a general test that evaluates the English, Mathematical, Science, and Verbal skills of the test-takers. Whereas, SAT subject test is taken to prove knowledge about a particular subject. SAT subject tests are offered in Maths, Science, English, History, and Languages.
There are reasons why the SAT exam is considered significant during undergraduate program admission:
What is the use of SAT exam in India?
The main aim to conduct the SAT exam in India is testing the high school student’s knowledge level of Maths, reading, and writing to secure admission in undergraduate courses in India as well as abroad. Few of the SAT accepting colleges in India are Manav Rachna University, FLAME, Shiv Nadar, Ashoka, and more.
Both SAT and ACT, have questions from the same topics and are used for college admissions. Comparison between the two tests –

There are no specific eligibility criteria for SAT by the College Board. Those who want to appear for the SAT exam should have the following criteria:
There is no minimum or maximum age criteria. Research has shown that students in the age group of 17 to 19 are among the highest to appear for SAT.
Candidates can take the SAT exam as many times as they want, there are no restrictions set by the College Board. SAT exam is conducted 5 times a year in India, usually in the months of March, May, August, October, and December.
There is no strict educational qualification as SAT exam eligibility criteria. SAT exams can be taken by students who are in high school and want to apply for undergraduate studies abroad to move to the next level of their learning.
You can register online, or mail, or by phone. SAT Exam Registration is open throughout the year. Interested candidates, however, are required to book the upcoming test date of their choice before the deadline of the application date. College Board has advised the universities to consider the deadlines and extend them due to the test center closures occurring due to the pandemic. For a change of test date or late registration, candidates need to pay extra fees. Also, the Sunday administrations generally start after the Saturday tests for the candidates who cannot take the exam due to religious reasons. Candidates who missed the late deadline date can apply for a waitlist. They have generated three ways for universities to help the candidates:
Note: There is a very limited number of SAT test dates released to date, and the conducting authority is continuously trying to accommodate the rising number of students wanting to register for SAT. It is, therefore, recommended that candidates should firstly find if their selected college is requiring the SAT exam or has made it ‘test-optional’.
Candidates need to register by mail, if:
SAT registrations cannot be canceled prior to five days of the booked test. In case of canceled registration, a partial refund of $10 will be received. The refund processing starts six weeks after the test date.
Test-takers will be required to spend $30 for changing the SAT test date. They need to access the SAT account, and place a request for a change of SAT exam date.
Due to COVID-19, most of the SAT test centers are following some strict guidelines for the test day:
Each SAT Subject Test (Except Language Tests with Listening)
Language Tests with Listening (Only available in November)
The conducting body of SAT doesn't accept cash. There are three ways to pay SAT exam fee:
Only a few exam dates for SAT are left this year. As most grad schools waive off SAT requirement, the situation is quite dicy. ‘Does 2021 require SAT?’ is the most asked question among candidates looking for SAT exam dates 2021. It should be noted that most of the abroad universities have made the SAT exam ‘test-optional’ but the SAT scores will be considered if submitted. After checking the official SAT website, we have found the data on SAT exam dates of the 2021-22 session. It must be noted that the below SAT exam dates 2021 are solely for international candidates or the ones not residing in the US or its union territories. Check the table below for that:

JEE Mains and Advance is way more difficult than SAT. Till date, just a single person achieved full marks in JEE, whereas quite often candidates obtain 1600/1600 in the SAT exam.
SAT General Test and SAT exam Subject Test are the two widely taken SAT exams.
Each section of the SAT exam is scored on a 200 to 800 point scale. The total SAT score is the sum of each section's scores. The highest possible SAT score is 1600 or 800+800. If one takes the Essay test, then a separate score is given. The SAT essay is marked on three factors: Reading, Analysis, and Writing out of 2 to 8. The raw SAT score is converted into a scaled score based on specific rules. The average SAT score is 1000.
Each section has a raw SAT score which is based on the number of correct answers given
SAT Score reports can be accessed via College Board profile:
Furthermore, the SAT score report has a ‘Score Breakdown’ option that describes sectional scores. There are three breakdowns:
For 2020, 1510 and above is considered the highest score or 99th percentile. If the candidate scores the 75th percentile or in the range of 1200 – 1210 that will be considered a good score in SAT.
Most universities require the SAT Score reports to be sent directly from College Board rather than accepting copies. Candidates can either select four to five universities during registration and College Board will directly across the scores after their release without any additional cost. If you are sending the SAT scores after they are released there will be an additional fee to be incurred, though fee waivers help cancel the fee. Post-release, scores can be sent through:
SAT results are evaluated in a strict manner ensuring fairness. After the submission of the answer sheet, a rigid checking is carried on till they are delivered to the processing center. The answers are scanned, then checked by the system which considers the answers mentioned in the circles. From those circled answers, the raw score is calculated. To ensure proper checking of the answers, use a pencil and a soft eraser. The circle is to be filled in darkly.
The SAT cutoff for top universities requires the candidates to score around 1450 to ensure admission.
SAT exam preparation strategies and tips according to the subject areas are described as follows:
