The stones are a major tourist attraction because they have bee often been described in popular media as examples of phallic architecture.
The cemetery according to legend contains stones of people who were cursed by a god for their sins and belonged to people who believed in fetishism centuries ago.
But experts are still baffled about the exact age, meaning of the stones, and the reason why they were erected in the first place.
Many have said that very little research has been done on it because of the country's national embarrassment over the site. On the other hand, some anthropologists have suggested over the years that the stones can be traced back to phallus worshipping peoples from Central Asia and India. However, no conclusive proof of such a practice has ever been found.
Khalid Nabi cemetery is also a religious pilgrimage place where women pray seeking boons for their welfare, by way of tying ribbons close to trees. Researchers said it is the site of a 4th-century tomb belonging to the Yemeni Christian prophet, Khaled.
All have not been well on the site. In 2015, it was reported that robbers were looting the graves.
"According to local residents who live nearby, on days when the site is empty of tourists, certain individuals sneak in and vandalise the stones," a report had claimed.
Interestingly, the cemetery is now a national heritage site protected by the Iranian government.
