From Elizabeth Taylor to Justin Bieber.
Dating is hard. Dating in Hollywood is even harder. When everyone is trying to spin a narrative out of your life, it's nearly impossible to have a functional relationship or breakup. Take a look back at some of the celebrity love triangles that shook Hollywood to its core, from its early days up to today.
Eddie Fisher, Debbie Reynolds, and Elizabeth Taylor
Debbie Reynolds and her husband were Hollywood royalty during their marriage. Reynolds told People in 2015 that she was close friends with Elizabeth Taylor after they went to school together at MGM. When Taylor married her third husband, Mike Todd, Reynolds was the matron of honor and Eddie Fisher was Todd’s best man. Soon after, Todd died in a plane crash, and Reynolds and Fisher comforted Taylor as she mourned. Fisher soon left Reynolds and ended up marrying Taylor just one year after her husband’s death. While Taylor would divorce Fisher after five years, she didn’t repair her friendship with Reynolds until many years later. The two also worked together in a TV movie called These Old Broads before Taylor’s death in 2011.
Spencer Tracy, Louise Treadwell, and Katharine Hepburn
Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn were the perfect match when they starred together for the first time in Woman of the Year. Tracy, however, was already married to Louise Treadwell. The two met when they were in their 20s and had two children together. Though they had marriage troubles, Tracy never left Treadwell, because he was a devout Catholic and his religion did not allow for divorce, People reported. Tracy and Treadwell started living separately, and eventually, Hepburn and Tracy began a relationship. They were together until his death in 1967, after they filmed their final movie together, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner. While it was an open secret that Hepburn and Tracy were together, it wasn’t until her book, Me: Stories of My Life, was released in 1991 that she openly talked about her relationship with Tracy.
Johnny Cash, Vivian Liberto, and June Carter Cash
It started out like the perfect love story: Johnny Cash met Vivian Liberto at a roller-skating rink in San Antonio in 1951, according to the Los Angeles Times. Soon after, he was deployed to Germany by the United States Air Force. After three years and thousands of pages of love letters, the two married and had four children together, Liberto revealed in her book. Cash soon made it big and was constantly touring while also dealing with severe alcohol and drug abuse. It was then that he met June Carter and they started to have an affair. Liberto soon filed for divorce, and Cash later married Carter. The two stayed together until her death in 2003. Cash’s love letter to Carter for her 65th birthday is now considered to be the greatest love letter of all time.
Nancy Sinatra, Frank Sinatra, and Ava Gardner
Frank Sinatra was taken with actress Ava Gardner from the first moment he saw her. Shortly after, the two began a passionate love affair. Although Frank was known to stray from his wife, and mother of his three children, his relationship with Gardner was different. In 1950, he left Nancy for the actress, and as soon as their divorce was finalized in 1951, Frank and Gardner got married. They were together until 1957, when they divorced.
Courtney Love, Billy Corgan, and Kurt Cobain
Courtney Love and Kurt Cobain will always be considered one of rock and roll’s most iconic couples, but Love wasn’t with Cobain from the beginning. Back in the '90s, Love was dating Billy Corgan of The Smashing Pumpkins. Love revealed in an interview for the documentary Montage of Heck that the two later broke up, because Corgan wouldn't pay for her to fly home after a show. The Smashing Pumpkins were playing with Nirvana at the time, so she ended up staying with the Nirvana band members. She began a relationship with Cobain, with whom she had a daughter, Frances Bean Cobain, she revealed in an interview. She said Frances Bean was conceived on a night she had meant to see Corgan.
Meg Ryan, Dennis Quaid, and Russell Crowe
Meg Ryan and Russell Crowe were in Ecuador shooting their film, Proof of Life (2000), when tabloids found out that Ryan was cheating on her then-husband of nine years, Dennis Quaid, with Crowe. News broke around the world about the affair and Quaid soon filed for divorce, according to People. Ryan fought back against the allegations that the divorce was all her fault, alleging to InStyle that Quaid was also unfaithful during their marriage. Crowe and Ryan later split up, and Proof of Life completely bombed at the box office, showing that bad publicity isn’t always a good thing.
Mia Farrow, Woody Allen, and Soon-Yi Previn
Mia Farrow and Woody Allen began dating in 1979, shortly after the actress had left her husband, André Previn, with whom she had six children (three adopted and three biological). Allen and Farrow were one of the most popular couples of the '80s, and though they never married, were together for 10 years. During their relationship, they adopted three children together and welcomed a biological son, Ronan Farrow.
In 1992, the news of an affair between the director and Farrow and Previn's adopted daughter, Soon-Yi, spread through the media–although the affair reportedly started in 1991. The two became a couple, stating that they never viewed each other as father or daughter, and never lived in the same household as each other. They married in 1997 and have two adopted daughters.
Since the mid-'90s, there have been sexual assault allegations surrounding Allen, which have been revived due to the #MeToo movement. Allen's son, Ronan Farrow, stands steadfast that his father sexually assaulted his adopted sister, Dylan Farrow. As a result of these allegations, the director's Amazon deal and memoir were dropped.
Anjelica Huston, Jack Nicholson, and Rebecca Broussard
Anjelica Huston and Jack Nicholson had an on-again, off-again relationship from 1973 to 1990; it ended when the actor revealed that he and model Rebecca Broussard were expecting a child together. After learning the news, Huston drove to Paramount Pictures where Nicholson was on set and confronted him. "He was coming out of the bathroom when I attacked him," she wrote in her memoir, Watch Me. "I don't think I kicked him, but I beat him savagely about the head and shoulders. He was ducking and bending, and I was going at him like a prizefighter, raining a vast array of direct punches."
Nicholson and Broussard stayed together until 1994, and had two children, Lorraine and Raymond.
Princess Diana, Prince Charles, and Camilla Parker-Bowles
After meeting at a polo match, Prince Charles began seeing the young Camilla Shand, but the pair broke up and Camilla married Andrew Parker-Bowles in 1973. Charles went on to marry Princess Diana in 1981, but Diana revealed the affair between Charles and Camilla in an unauthorized interview in 1995. "Well, there were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded," Diana told Martin Bashir.
Charles and Diana got divorced in 1996. Charles went on to marry Camilla in a civil service at Windsor chapel in 2005, where she became the Duchess of Cornwall.
Aaron Carter, Hilary Duff, and Lindsay Lohan
Ah, young love. Aaron Carter started dating fellow teen star Hilary Duff back in 2001 and was with her for two years until he decided to date Lindsay Lohan at the same time. Eventually, Carter broke things off with both Duff and Lohan in 2003, but not before things got heated between the two starlets in a feud that went on for years. Lohan even made fun of Duff on SNL in 2004 (pictured above). Carter would later try to reach out to Duff on Twitter, but she denied him once again, breaking our early 2000s preteen hearts once more.
Laura Dern, Billy Bob Thornton, and Angelina Jolie
After meeting on the set of Ellen, Laura Dern and Billy Bob Thornton began dating in 1997. The couple were living together when Thornton swiftly ended things with Dern and married Angelina Jolie in 2000. Comparing the breakup to a "sudden death," Dern explained the circumstances. "I left our home to work on a movie, and while I was away, my boyfriend got married, and I've never heard from him again," she told Talk magazine in 2000. Dern went on to marry Ben Harper and have two children, while Thornton and Jolie divorced in 2003.
Billy Crudup, Mary-Louise Parker, and Claire Danes
In 2003, Billy Crudup and Mary-Louise Parker had been dating for eight years when they announced Parker was pregnant with their first child together, Page Six reported. But just a few short months before the due date, Crudup left Parker to be with Claire Danes. The summer before, Crudup and Danes were working together shooting their film Stage Beauty. Danes and Crudup were together for three years until they broke it off in 2006. Though Parker never talked openly about the split, in 2015 she released a book of letters, one of which discusses how she dealt with the aftermath of her breakup, according to Jezebel.
Sienna Miller, Jude Law, and Daisy Wright
Jude Law proposed to Sienna Miller on Christmas Day in 2004, but less than a year later, the couple found themselves amid a tabloid scandal, as his affair with Daisy Wright—the nanny of his children with his first wife, Sadie Frost—was revealed. The actor issued a public apology to his fiancée, and the two reunited a few times before calling it quits for good in 2011.
Ethan Hawke, Uma Thurman, and Ryan Shawhughes
After becoming the It couple of the '90s, Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman got married in 1998 and welcomed two children together. Unfortunately, they parted ways in 2003 after rumors surfaced that Hawke became a little too close to their childcare provider, Ryan Shawhughes. Thurman and Hawke's divorce was finalized in 2005, and three years later, the actor and his former nanny officially tied the knot.

Brad Pitt, Jennifer Aniston, and Angelina Jolie
Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston were Hollywood’s hottest couple when they started dating back in 1998. After two years, they got married in a $1 million celebration in Malibu, according to the New York Daily News. They seemed to be going strong until around 2005, when the couple announced to People that they were getting divorced. During that time, Pitt was working with Angelina Jolie on Mr. and Mrs. Smith, and they soon started dating after the divorce announcement. Pitt and Jolie later become the new It couple and got married in 2014, but since then, Jolie filed for divorce.
Marilyn Manson, Dita Von Teese, and Evan Rachel Wood
Marilyn Manson and Dita Von Teese began dating in 2001, and tied the knot in 2005. Just over a year into their marriage, the burlesque dancer filed for divorce and moved out of their house right before Christmas. Shortly after their breakup, Manson began dating Evan Rachel Wood. Neither party has ever spoken about the alleged infidelity, even though it was heavily covered by the media.
Manson and the then-19-year-old Wood went on to get engaged in 2010, but separated not long after.
Reese Witherspoon, Ryan Phillippe, and Abbie Cornish
Reese Witherspoon met Ryan Phillippe at her 21st birthday party in 1997. The pair went on to costar in the 1999 film Cruel Intentions. By the end of that year, the couple were married and welcomed their first child together, Ava Phillippe. Fans were devastated when the couple filed for divorce in 2006 after seven years of marriage. Phillippe was soon linked to his Stop-Loss costar, Abbie Cornish, and rumors of infidelity circulated. The couple dated until 2010. As for Witherspoon, she married talent agent Jim Toth in 2011.
Tom Brady, Bridget Moynahan, and Gisele Bündchen
Tom Brady and actress Bridget Moynahan started dating in 2004 and broke up at the end of 2006, when Moynahan was pregnant. Following their split, Brady moved on to supermodel Gisele Bündchen. "Going through that traumatic time of being heartbroken and then being pregnant turned my whole life upside down and inside out and just knocked the wind out of me," Moynahan told Harper's Bazaar in 2008. "But I got so much out of that." The actress keeps her relationship with Brady, as well as their 12-year-old son Jack Moynahan, private, but she has praised the couple's co-parenting efforts.
Brady and Bündchen went on to marry in 2009 and have two children together.
Eddie Cibrian, Brandi Glanville, and LeAnn Rimes
It was the 2009 movie Northern Lights that brought Eddie Cibrian and LeAnn Rimes together. The couple both left their respective spouses for one another, although Cibrian had already had a string of extramarital affairs while married to ex-wife Brandi Glanville. One was with Vanderpump Rules star Scheana Shay and was thoroughly documented for the Bravo show.
Sandra Bullock, Jesse James, and Michelle McGee
Sandra Bullock and Jesse James got married in 2005, and after nearly a half a decade-long union, the couple announced they were divorcing. Bullock filed against her husband when she learned of his many affairs, but in particular the one with entertainer Michelle McGee.
Alex Rodriguez, Kate Hudson, and Cameron Diaz
In 2009, Kate Hudson dated Alex Rodriguez from May until December. Shortly after the two broke up, Us Weekly reported that another blonde bombshell was seen leaving A-Rod's New York City apartment: Cameron Diaz. Despite Hudson's reported dismay, Rodriguez and Diaz dated only one month before calling it quits.
Mel Gibson, Robyn Moore, and Oksana Grigorieva
Mel Gibson was married to Robyn Moore for 26 years before he was photographed with Oksana Grigorieva in 2006. The actor left his Australian wife—which cost him $425 million in a divorce settlement—and was with Grigorieva until 2010. In 2010, Grigorieva released verbally abusive voicemails left on her phone by Gibson, which he claimed were edited.
Kim Kardashian, Kris Humphries, and Kanye West
Kim Kardashian West made headlines when she and Kris Humphries divorced 72 days after their extravagant, televised wedding. When Kanye West released "Theraflu" in 2012—featuring the lyrics, "And I’ll admit, I had fell in love with Kim / Around the time she had fell in love with him / Well that’s cool, baby girl, do your thing / Lucky I ain’t had Jay drop him from the team"—it became clear that he was crushing on Kim long before her divorce. The two ended up getting together and welcomed their first child, North West, in 2013. They tied the knot a year later in Italy and now have four children.
Tony Parker, Eva Longoria, and Erin Barry
When Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria married French-American NBA player Tony Parker in 2007, it seemed like a match made in heaven. But three years after the couple tied the knot, Longoria filed for divorce. It was later revealed that Parker had been having an affair with Erin Barry, the wife of his San Antonio Spurs teammate.
Orlando Bloom, Miranda Kerr, and Justin Bieber
Orlando Bloom was married to Victoria's Secret model Miranda Kerr for three years, during which a jealous brawl between Justin Bieber and her now ex-husband reportedly took place. Apparently, Bieber flirted a little too much with the model during the 2012 fashion show.
Arnold Schwarzenegger, Maria Shriver, and Mildred Baena
Arnold Schwarzenegger married Maria Shriver in 1986, but in 2011 the couple rocked the media and the state of California when they filed for divorce. After 25 years of marriage, and four children together, Schwarzenegger revealed that he had fathered a son with their housekeeper, Mildred Baena.
Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Rupert Sanders
In the height of Twilight madness at the box office, Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson were every teen’s dream—until photos of Stewart and Rupert Sanders kissing were published by Us Weekly. Sanders, who was directing Stewart in Snow White and the Huntsman, was married to model and actress Liberty Ross at the time. After issuing apologies, Stewart and Pattinson ended up getting back together, only to break up again in 2013. People reported that Sanders’s wife filed for divorce in 2013 and has since gone on to marry Interscope cofounder Jimmy Iovine.
Joe Jonas, Taylor Swift, and Camilla Belle
Joe Jonas and Taylor Swift were one of music's cutest couples. Well, until he broke up with her in a 25-second phone call, as she revealed on Ellen. Not long after that, Jonas was seen hanging around with Camilla Belle, and Swift revealed to Us Weekly that Belle was the reason why Jonas broke up with her in the first place. She used the breakup as the inspiration for songs like “Forever & Always” and “Holy Ground.” Swift also took the time to write a song that was apparently about Belle called “Better than Revenge,” showing that her exes are not the only people she writes about.
Jennifer Garner, Ben Affleck, and Christine Ouzounian
Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck started dating after filming Daredevil together in 2004, and a year later, they tied the knot in Turks and Caicos. After welcoming three children together, the couple ended their 10-year marriage. Rumors surfaced that Affleck was caught having a relationship with their nanny, Christine Ouzounian. But Garner set the record straight in Vanity Fair, "We had been separated for months before I ever heard about the nanny. She had nothing to with our decision to divorce. She was not a part of the equation."
Ian Somerhalder, Nina Dobrev, and Nikki Reed
Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev dated for three years while filming their hit television show, The Vampire Diaries. Shortly after calling it quits in 2013, Somerhalder began dating a vampire from another franchise: Twilight actress Nikki Reed. The pair dated for six months before getting engaged in 2015 and married later that year. Naturally, rumors swirled that the relationship caused friction between the two starlets, but all three of the actors claim they are friends.
