Project EDGE 5 (2025)

Years indicate year of entry into service with Celebrity Cruises.
Celebrity Apex is an Edge -class cruise ship operated by Celebrity Cruises , a subsidiary of Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd . Constructed at Chantiers de l'Atlantique in Saint-Nazaire , France , [8] she is the second vessel in the company's Edge class of ships, following the delivery of her sister ship, Celebrity Edge , in 2018. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , her debut sailing was from Athens on June 19, 2021 to the Greek Islands.

On 4 December 2014, Celebrity's parent company, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. , announced that they had finalized an order with STX France for two new ships that would compose a new class of vessels for the Celebrity Cruises fleet. [9] The two ships were known under Project EDGE and were planned to be at 117,000 GT each, with a guest capacity of 2,900 passengers. [9] Deliveries were originally planned for Fall 2018 and early 2020 for the two vessels, respectively. [9] Each ship was reported to come at a cost of US$1 billion. [10]

On 21 November 2016, the day of Celebrity Edge 's steel-cutting ceremony, Celebrity also announced the name of the second ship in the Edge class as Celebrity Beyond . [11] On 23 July 2018, Celebrity marked the beginning of construction for the ship with a steel-cutting ceremony at the shipyard [8] and also announced a name change for the second Edge- class ship from Celebrity Beyond to Celebrity Apex . [12] A ceremony marking the laying of the keel was celebrated on 31 October 2018, performed in conjunction with the delivery of Celebrity Edge . [13] She was floated out from the shipyard on 17 May 2019. [2]

The commencement for the ship's sea trials were hampered twice. [14] The first set was initially set for 15 January 2020, but were cancelled due to bad weather. [14] The new date of 17 January 2020 faced a second setback, a tugboat and port sailors' strike. [14] The ship ultimately left for her first set of sea trials in the Bay of Biscay on 4 February 2020 [15] and completed them on 8 February 2020. [16]

Construction on the vessel was completed in early March 2020. [17]

The COVID-19 pandemic impacted the ship's delivery process and christening timeline. In what was believed to be the first virtual delivery of a cruise ship due to the travel restrictions that were in place, Celebrity took virtual delivery of Celebrity Apex on 27 March 2020 via a video conference between officials from Celebrity and Chantiers de l'Atlantique. [18] [19] [20] The ship was initially scheduled to be delivered a week prior, on 20 March, at the shipyard. [15] [21]

On 16 January 2020, Celebrity originally announced that Reshma Saujani , founder and CEO of Girls Who Code , would christen the vessel at the inaugural ceremony in Southampton on 30 March 2020, but it was announced on 5 March 2020 that all naming festivities would be postponed until the ship arrived in Fort Lauderdale, Florida in late 2020. [22] [5]

The COVID-19 pandemic also impacted the ship's inaugural season. Celebrity Apex was originally scheduled to set sail from Saint-Nazaire towards Southampton on 21 March 2020, following her delivery ceremony. [23] [24] Her pre-inaugural voyage was scheduled for 1 April 2020, a four-night sailing out of Southampton, calling in Bruges and Amsterdam . [25] Her maiden voyage was set for 5 April 2020, traveling along the coasts of Spain and Portugal . [26] She was scheduled to homeport in Southampton through the spring, before re-positioning to the Mediterranean for the summer. [27] Celebrity's suspension of operations due to the pandemic resulted in the postponement of her maiden voyage [1] and the cancellation of all Southampton sailings [18] as well as the second tentative debut date, which had been set for 20 May from Barcelona. [18] [28]

Celebrity Apex was scheduled to re-position to Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale in fall 2020 to sail week-long, round-trip Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries. [29]

Like her sister ship, Celebrity Edge , Celebrity Apex is equipped with the "Magic Carpet," an orange cantilevered platform suspended along the starboard side of the ship that can move vertically between the top and bottom decks. [25] The platform is designed to facilitate more seamless tender service and also create more guest space when at sea. More of the Edge 's features unique to the company fleet carry over to Apex , including the "infinite veranda" balcony staterooms that integrate the balcony patios into the cabins' structure, a three-deck aft dining and performance venue called "Eden," and an outdoor garden on the top deck. [25] She is also similarly designed to maximize fuel efficiency with her "parabolic ultrabow", a bow vertically rising towards its decks that provides additional sheathing for the bulbous bow and also houses the propellers to reduce drag. [30] [31]

On 26 March 2020, the Regional Health Agency of the French region Pays de la Loire reported that seven crew members aboard Celebrity Apex had tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 . [32] At the time, Celebrity Apex had just been constructed at Chantiers de l'Atlantique and was waiting to be delivered to Celebrity. [33] There were 1407 crew members already on board at the time. [32]

Before the first positive cases were reported, reports showed practices aboard the ship did not reflect the seriousness of the progression of the pandemic at the time. [33] For example, a large party was held on 21 March 2020, even when France had been under a national lockdown beginning on 17 March 2020. [33] [34] However, once the first seven crew members tested positive, the whole crew was placed in isolation and forbidden from leaving the ship. [32]

The next day, on 27 March 2020, 29 people had tested positive for the virus, and one person had been brought to a hospital with breathing issues. [35] By 31 March 2020, 157 people had tested positive and two had been hospitalized; [36] by the next week, on 7 April 2020, 217 people had tested positive, with four hospitalized and two in intensive care ; [37] [38] and by the following week, on 15 April 2020, 224 people had tested positive, out of a total of 1444 people tested. [a] [40]

Citing Celebrity's mistreatment of the ship's crew during the pandemic, a crew member of Celebrity Apex , who tested positive for the virus on 30 March 2020, filed a class action lawsuit against the cruise line on 14 April 2020 "on behalf of all ... similarly situated crewmembers working aboard [Celebrity Cruises's] vessels". [41] [42] [39] The lawsuit alleged that Celebrity failed to provide proper personal protective equipment (PPE), allowed independent contractors to freely enter and exit the ship, failed to test people boarding the ship for symptoms of coronavirus, failed to enact appropriate lockdown measures, and failed to provide "prompt, proper, and adequate medical care" to its employees, amongst other claims. [39]

[a]pproximately three hundred and fifty (350) crewmembers working aboard the Celebrity Apex test[ed] positive for COVID-19. Eight (8) crewmembers who tested positive were admitted to a local French hospital; four (4) such crewmembers who displayed symptoms return[ed] to the ship a few days later, the other four (4) remain[ed] in the French hospital. Celebrity Apex ship is part of the current revolution for Celebrity, which for years has pushed the bar when it comes to design and delight. For the second of its Edge-class ships, the cruise line partnered with some big-name designers -- including Kelly Hoppen and Jouin Manku -- to bring an airy, modern feel to every space onboard, inside and out. And while the 2,910-passenger ship is fancy, it's not stuffy – there's a relaxed vibe throughout.
Celebrity Apex shines when it comes to dining and nightlife, striking the right balance between fun, flair and familiar. The quality of food, no matter the restaurant, will make every passenger happy, whether you're seeking simple buffet fare or elaborate fine-dining.
Likewise, the nightlife ranges from quiet corners to full-on participatory performance in the spectacular Eden complex – a gorgeous, window-filled space that feels both relaxing and evocative.
Apex also excels at innovation, with unique features like the heralded Magic Carpet, a cantilevered platform that juts from the side of the ship and can move up and down depending on its use. At the lowest deck, it serves as a gateway to ports, making embarkation and debarkation easy. On other decks, it's a restaurant or bar space with unparalleled views.
Passengers looking for features like waterslides or climbing walls will have to look elsewhere, and while Apex is open to families -- even offering a solid kids club and programming -- it's not designed with activities aimed to thrill children.
The ship also offers infinite verandas, staterooms that have a modified approach to the traditional balcony. This gives passengers more internal square footage while offering a more customizable balcony experience.
Apex is also notable for its exceptional offerings to suite guests. The Celebrity Apex Retreat experience encompasses private and exclusive dining, a lounge and splendid sundeck, aimed at giving suite passengers seclusion and comfort. It's the perfect balance between luxury and big ship cruising.

In our experience, the Edge Villa Suite blows away all other cabins we've booked in our 25-year cruising history. The Norwegian Fjord trip in August 2022 was beautiful but it was enhanced and almost overshadowed by the incomparable luxury of our two-story suite. Every evening the private jacuzzi was ready for a relaxing soak prior to dinner. This is an expensive suite, but the value is definitely there. …

we have been on celebrity over 20 times. Elite plus members casino club etc.. after the last sailing when we had the royal suite for two weeks then the suite on12 corner we were expecting near the same. BIG MISTAKE! They offer many more dining choices so we were excited. That ended quickly. From the beginning there were obvious problems of shortages .At breakfast there was no jelly's one pat of butter between two of us and no salt and pepper on tables 'When i asked for cream cheese after waiting 20 minutes and the bagel was already cold come one spoonful of cream cheese. Lunches were fine no problems there. Dinner however was a nightmare the food especially the steaks was inedible! My wife said you should save it to make a soul for my shoes. Even Tuscany was bad .Very sorry to have to write this review we love celebrity but now We don't khow,Be forwarned …

We wanted something different and opted for a cruise to Norway, leaving from Amsterdam, as we had never been to any of these places. It was simple getting from our hotel in central Amsterdam to the Terminal and onboarding was slick and immediate. We were required to do an Antigen test two days before sailing, which cost us Euros 80, and were never requested, which is bizarre. I hope they change their policy on this matter. The cases were brought to the room by the time we finished a delicious lunch in Tuscany Restaurant. We chose the Concierge Class stateroom on the 11th deck. The space was ample, not too much wardrobe space but adequate. No need to bring a hairdryer as they have on board, together with umbrellas and binoculars. Our concierge, Gede, was delightful, available and responsive. Every evening he would do a turndown service, providing plenty of dry towels and immaculate cleaning. We had the premier drinks package, choices are generous, fine wine from USA and France, small surcharge if you want to drink Veuve Clicquot. Hendriks Gin is a favourite of ours, and that's included and available as well as sugar free tonic. The martini bar is exceptional and has great bands playing music suited to our era (80's and 90's type music). They host the silent disco here which is huge fun! The food, not sure where to start, I consider us discerning eaters and I cannot ask for more in this department. Breakfast was at Oceanview, all day dining. They were strict, thankfully, about washing hands as we arrived, and serving food. Nobody sticking their dirty hands onto things, then leaving it behind, as they do...Even the fussiest eater would find something suitable. The crispy streaky bacon was delicious and the baked goods a surprise each morning. Cafe latte's with different milk is on offer, they have lactose free milk to my delight, on board. Lunches and dinners at any restaurant was great. Sommeliers at Tuscany were scarce on one evening and it was near impossible to get a drink, but by and large. service great. They didn't have pinot noir on offer on night one which was disappointing. The specialty restaurants are fabulous and worth spending the extra on them! We tried all of them and were not ever disappointed. Excursions through The Cruise Web was well run, Geiranger fjords on a catamaran was great. Excursion to Pulpit Rock with Celebrity was chaotic and rushed. We opted to go with Celebrity for this one as they guarantee return to the ship, however they leave you only with about 4 hours to complete the entire 9,2km hike. We literally rushed up, sat there for 15 minutes and rushed back. It was strenuous as they said, but could have been so much nicer had we longer to complete it, to appreciate the scenery and catch ones breath. The worst part, was we got back to the bus with 5 minutes to spare from the "departure time", but sat on the bus for 50 minutes, waiting for people who sauntered up and were unfit and couldn't make it on time. They really need to sort this out, we were furious. The spa was an unexpected treat the next day as we had on board credits. Massages are average... The entertainment in the theatre was hit and miss, we went to two shows, there wasn't an opoprtunity to see any circus type acts. The Elton John entertainer was average.... Wifi crashed for an entire day whilst we were in the fjiords, but adequate for the rest of the trip. It would be necessary if you were trying to work etc, to get the upgraded package. Norway is clean and beautiful, slick, everything works, people are polite and worth visiting. Alesund isn't that exciting, but we enjoyed strolling around. Settling the account is easy and no need to even present yourself if you have given them your credit card details. Leaving the ship is organised and simple. We have booked to go again next year as we absolutely loved this ship and everything about Celebrity. …

My rating is based on value for money. We had 2 Infinite Balcony Cabins that came with Drinks, Wifi, and Gratuities. What was good... Eden restaurant - 5 star menu, service, sommelier, and atmosphere, consistently The ship - beautiful The ship tour - very organized, informative and entertaining Our cabin steward - went above and beyond The Tuscan Restaurant - best service of all main dining rooms Bruge Canals shore excursion The Spa - organized, friendly staff, did a great job with my massage, my mom's wash and style, and our mani/pedis The Gym - clean, lots of options The Rooftop Deck - very pretty and serene The Sunset Bar - great service, and pretty view The Food - great variety and planning. Although we did wonder why the fruit (bananas, pineapples, etc...) were rarely ripe. Room Service - limited menu, but the service itself was reliable Le Petit Chef - the show was fabulous. The food was amazing. Helpful hint, this is a huge 4 course meal, I recommend light snackin
