The CDE Browser provides public access to caDSR contents for searching, viewing and downloading CDEs in Excel or XML format. The CDE Curation Tool simplifies the effort to achieve ISO/IEC 11179 metadata compliance, minimizing keystrokes and enabling reuse of existing CDE components.
We therefore accessed CDE content via the CDE browser (15), which performs a live query of the database. The downloaded contents are in the form of XML or a delimited file containing 57 columns. This file is the result of a join of around nine relational tables, and is consequently highly redundant in content.

CDE was the result of some cross-vendor standardization effort aka it was basically a desktop designed by committee. When you saw CDE on a Unix you just knew its vendor had gone f@.@ it no one's ever gonna leave the terminal anyway.
