I am a 40-something woman near the end of my divorce, and I am the one who was unfaithful.
I have always hated the idea of cheaters. Sleazy, lying scumbags who were only out for themselves. Selfish egocentrics who were mostly men, with the exception of the soap opera vixen type. Certainly not a clean cut suburban mom like me.
As I have come to experience firsthand, sometimes there is more than meets the eye when it comes to infidelity. I grew up with an unfaithful father. I knew without knowing from the time I was young that my dad was a habitual cheater. The arguments in front of me and my sister stained my childhood and gave me an insecurity that I've finally conquered as an adult. I hated cheating and swore to myself (and my husband) that I would never be unfaithful.
I don't condone cheating. It is toxic to a marriage and a family, immoral and myopic. And yet, I have done what I promised I would not do.
My marriage disintegrated slowly throughout about 15 of its 20 years. Looking back, I now understand the fatal flaws and I know better. But in my 20s when I chose the man I would marry and to be the father of my children, I honestly didn't know what it actually meant to be compatible with someone. I didn't comprehend the factors we'd need to cement our marriage into our twilight years.
I was looking at surface likes and dislikes, political party and our shared preference for Italian food. He was handsome, athletic and had a good job. Unfortunately the facade was all there was. I was in a marriage without a friend. He didn't ask about my work or my friends, sometimes didn't say goodbye when he left the house. He didn't want date nights with me, just the two of us. He'd say I should go with my friends, but when I did, he didn't ask where I was going, who I was going with, and he didn't say I looked pretty. I felt ignored.
I wasn't happy and knew I'd never be. Still, I told myself this was the decision I made. I was married with two young children and I decided I'd make the best of it. I didn't consider divorce. What I hadn't realized is that over time I grieved the end of my marriage while I was still in it. I lay awake in bed at night crying, wondering how it was ever going to get better. He was next to me in bed, never a word to me, never wrapped his arms around me, never asked what was wrong. Our sex life was rote and obligatory and from a standpoint of true intimacy, completely unfulfilling. I was incredibly lonely.
I talked to him, asked him why, told him what I needed. I tried speaking in a number of different ways, quietly, lovingly, matter-of-fact and angrily. I asked about couples therapy, but he refused. Sometimes he would make an effort and that helped restore my hope that we would be okay. But more often he was defensive and said I imagined all this, said I was overreacting.
So I threw myself into my children and work and ignored my own needs. I did this for a very long time and continued to put myself last on my own priority list.
When I cheated on my husband, it wasn't something I planned. I know that's what they all say but it's true. I certainly wasn't looking for it. A friendship with another man grew into something that was not tawdry sex, but a renewed sense of happiness and hope. It evolved over time and wasn't based in lust, but conversation, appreciation and understanding. Things I hadn't really ever had from my husband. As I told my best friend to help explain it, sometimes you don't realize you're in an abyss until you begin to see daylight.
For those who say I didn't try -- I did, for the better part of a decade and a half. For those who will judge me, I understand and that's your right. Again, I don't condone cheating. If I had known what would happen, and was aware of myself enough to understand what it all meant, I would go back and end my marriage before any infidelity took place. But I didn't realize much of anything at the time, even as I was going through it.
For me and my situation, I truly believe it was inevitable and the only way things could have happened.

I work about 50 hours per week and travel fairly often, while my wife works about 20 hours and makes get own schedule so I never know when and leaves the house or comes home. I have always trusted my wife so this has never being an issue. Lately we argue about everything. We have gone days without talking to each other. I'll start with some background on my wife. She doesn't drink often, (gets drunk from one drink) she doesnt do drugs or smoke and often falls a sleep on by 10pm. She is a hairstylist and very concerned with her looks. Looking good is a priority and spends a lot of time and money on her appearance. Social media is her favorite thing to do, posting selfies every chance she gets. Btw, I could care less about snap, Instagram etc and i don't use it, meaning we are not social media "friends". Her cell phone is her biggest treasure and it never leaves her side. She typically sets it face down with the ringer off. Anyway one night she tells me that one of her coworkers (25yr old single f) asked her to go out last minute. My wife accepted and asked another friend (45yr old f who is leaving her husband) to join them. I'm not typically a jealous person so I told her to go out and have fun while i stayed home with the kids. I asked where she was going and she said that they were meeting up at a bar but didn't have any plans after that. I went to bed thinking she would be home around 230am (the bars here close at 1:45am). I woke up at 430am when I heard her come home. She went to bed and I went to sleep. The next day she stayed in bed until noon, I made her and the kids breakfast and took them to soccer while she slept. While I was watching the game one of her coworkers asked me where was my wife? I said she went out and she replied "oh yeah, that's right, the girls were planning on going last night for a while, that's why she scheduled the morning off. It was strange that my wife forgot to tell me this detail but whatever. This girl then proceeded to tell me exactly what bars and clubs they were planning on going to (remember my wife said she had no clue of where they were going). When I got home I asked my wife about her night and she just said "we bar hopped for a while and met some people". I asked where she went specifically and she mentioned the bars that her coworker mentioned at the soccer game. Knowing that this was planned I asked her why she kept it a secret before when I asked about her plans. She said that it was not planned and that's just where they decided to go. By now I started to get suspicious so I ask for more details. I asked if she met men and she said "I don't want to lie so yeah, I talked to a few men". When I asked why she got home so late she said that she was on the drive way talking to her friend in the car and didn't come in because she didn't want to wake the kids. She smelled like alcohol so I asked her how much did she drink, and she wasn't really sure. She got supper defensive and said that I was being crazy and to stop questioning her. She then said "I wouldn't go out if I was getting what I needed at home! ". I lost my breath when I heard that. I asked her what did she mean...no answer. I asked again and again until she said "I found your bank statements and you are hiding money from me" (btw, im not). I asked her why would she say that and she walked away. We didn't speak for a week and she went out again the following weekend. After a lot more arguments we went to couples therapy and started to work things out. A couple of weeks later I was out of state on a business trip and she sent me a couple of pictures in lingerie. I asked if she just took those pics and she said, she took them a while back. Btw I have never seen that lingerie before or after that. She told me she sometimes takes those pictures to feel sexy but doesn't share them with anyone. Yesterday I was looking for something and found a several pieces of lingerie (including crotchless panties) that I have never seen. They don't look new as they look like they have been washed. Could all of this be a coincidence, am I being crazy or should I get out of this marriage? What do you think? Please help!
TL;DR : I think my wife is cheating, I need help.
You are correct, we suck at communicating. One detail I forgot to add is that there are only 3 girls that work at the salon, my wife, the younger girl that she went out with, and the one that I saw at the game. If she heard their plans is because my wife was talking about it. The other girl that went out that night is my wife's ex coworker.
I dunno, both positions are weird here. Your questioning would have really put me off honestly, because maybe the coworker knew the plans from another of the women and your wife didn't. The rest is just sort of...meh. She seems unhappy but given how you describe your marriage, that seems understandable. I'd keep seeing the counselor and start going on dates to rekindle some passion. Relationships require work, not just counseling but spending quality time, being intimate and being friends. Doesn't seem like you have that.
I hope you are right. Between work and the kids we haven't made time for us.
explain what she could have possibly meant by "if I was getting what I needed at home"? She followed that with a deflection about bank statements and coupled these things with getting defensive and ending the conversation.
Your wife is unhappy. You do not appear to be concerned with why she is unhappy, but you're very preoccupied with whether she's cheating on you or not. I think you're missing the forest for the trees.
The third degree you gave her about the night out with her friends sounded less like a conversation and more like a lawyer trying to catch someone out in a cross-examination. "A- ha! You just said that you went to Bar X at 6.35pm when your friend said it was actually Bar Y, at 6:37pm! So who is he?"
She sent you sexy lingerie pics (which is already a pretty intimate, vulnerable act), and your response was to question if she took those for you or for her side piece? My response in that situation would be "Well fuck you then; I tried."
"I wouldn't go out if I was getting what I needed at home! "
I mean, maybe she is cheating. I don't know. But together with everything else in the thread it sounds like what she's lacking at home is attention, not hot fuckin'. Your therapist also confirmed (as much as you can, given patient confidentiality) that your wife is not, in fact, cheating on you.
You say you're in couple's therapy. From your wife's perspective, what are the current issues in your marriage? I think it's interesting that it's not something you've touched on in your post.
Regarding the lingerie that looked washed... I always wash lingerie before wearing it. My husband bought me some for Christmas that had evidence of being tried on...
Exactly. Clothing in the store has extra fire-retardant chemicals for warehouse storing and display. Usually some kind of starch as well. PLUS people may try it on in the store.
I and every woman I know washes all clothing before 1st use.
You've got some sketchy statements by her, and some vague circumstantial evidence, but you do not have Probable Cause evidence to suspect cheating.
My interpretation is that she appears to be getting restless in the marriage, and feels like she is being limited in that lifestyle. However, you both have been proactive in dealing with these and potential issues by preemptively seeing a counselor.
With her and the lingerie, and the sexy pictures she sent you, I highly advise going along with it and what she has planned for you concerning it. She wants your attention, and you need to give it to her for the health and survival of the marriage. If you rebuff her advances, this would likely lead to bigger problems.
Thank you for the advice. I really appreciate it
On the lingerie note, it could be that OP's wife is unhappy and upset with OP, and in a "good moment" bought some lingerie to surprise him when he came home from a business trip or something, but then was just so unhappy that she didn't want to initiate being sexy for him?
As many people have mentioned, it's not uncommon to wash lingerie when you get it, because you really don't know who's tried it on or anything like that. Best to just make sure it's clean..
She then said "I wouldn't go out if I was getting what I needed at home! ".
You are playing Nancy Drew when the house is on fire. Your wife is unhappy and if she isn't cheating on you, she is going to leave you anyways eventually if you don't resolve that. You need to figure out why she isn't happy and work on your relationship.
Frankly you have given her a pretty hard time about a girls night out and I wouldn't be terribly happy with you if I were her.
You don't have sufficient evidence to conclude she is cheating. You do have sufficient evidence to conclude your marriage is in trouble.
These comments are ridiculous and you see them so often in these types of situations. "Your wife isn't happy and you need to fix it!" No. It is not OP's job to make his wife happy, that is HER job. OP should definitely help her and support her, but he can't just make her happy. If working part time has a hair stylist and posting selfies all day turned out to not be super fulfilling for her she needs to figure it out. Cheating and being unhappy are not OP's fault.
You are romantically neglecting your wife. I do not think she is cheating.
Obviously, I can't tell if your wife is cheating or not. I've never cheated but a lot of this sounds like me. Some of it gets on my husband's nerves too. Your post says she's 40 and, for a lot of women, that's a terrifying number. I turned 40 as well and that's when a lot of my behavior changed.
Living on your phone and social media: I totally do this. Probably what gets on the husband's nerves the most.
Puts the phone on silent and face down: I do this so the above is not so much on his nerves. Including DND at night so the buzzing is not obnoxious.
Talking to men at bars: Seriously, 40 is when I started to wonder about my physical value. I was a fixture at home. Who knew if I was still attractive and interesting. I had no interest in being with another man, but I did kinda want to know that I could. It's just a self-esteem thing and for me, if it wasn't bad enough before, 40 made it worse.
She said she didn't know the plans: Not at all unusual. Sometimes it's nice to go with the flow. Even if this is not the norm for her, it's probably a way to try "lightening up". I too am experimenting with this and enjoying it.
Sitting in the car in the driveway talking to a friend for hours: Not a daily or weekly thing, but girls are chatty. I have totally done this multiple times even though I'm somewhat expected home.
"If I was getting what I needed at home.": This is the big deal for me. I wasn't getting what I needed at home either, but what I needed was not in the bedroom, butsomeone to hang out with me, have real fun with me. Literally just social interaction with grownups. To feel silly and relaxed sometimes in an environment that supports that. I missed it so much and worried that at my ripe age, I may never get it again.
The lingerie: Meh...I can't relate there, but that's not my thing. Doesn't seem like any major concern, but I see how it could if you are already concerned and seeking evidence.
Lastly, I'm just curious: Is she also dressing and acting and talking like a teenager at all? I started doing this...I completely acknowledge it. But again, it was just me trying not to feel so old and washed up. And, how old are your children? Mine are 10 & 13 and in addition to not getting much attention & interaction from the husband (who also works a lot), my children didn't seem to need or care about me either unless they wanted money, passwords, or a ride. That hurts a little. All of that combined just made me want to find me again and be the cool fun person I used to be that I felt like got lost.
TL;DR: None of this individually is a red flag to me. Consider a mid-life crisis and ask her to talk to you about it. (Do NOT use the term "mid-life" crisis on her unless you want her to flip out and shut you down. Even if she knows it, she doesn't want to hear it from you.)
ETA: I'm not necessarily justifying all these things as healthy and productive, just guilty of them and not sleeping with any other dudes.
Does it actually matter if she's cheating? You don't seem to have a lot of respect for her, or like her very much, anyway. This post reeks of disdain.
I don't know about this one. I would tend to excuse everything except the crotchless underwear. I am female btw. One thing I think is important is to not to rush to any conclusions. If you want to save your marriage you need to show you are mature and trusting. There's no bigger turnoff than an insecure man.
However, during a neutral time, could just point blank ask her and gauge her response? I know that if she gets highly defensive that likely means nothing because I get EXTREMELY agitated when I'm
