Cat Barbed Penis - Male Cat Anatomy
Cat Barbed Penis - Male Cat Anatomy
A male cat's penis has certain peculiarities which may, at first, appear somewhat shocking to some cat owners. A male cat’s penile is formed in such a way that it allows a cat to fulfill its necessary function within the reproductive cycle of the species.
Keep reading here at AnimalWised to find out everything you need to know about a cat’s penis , as well as how to tell a male cat from a female cat. In addition, we’ll be discussing cat reproduction , male cat anatomy and possible cat penis health problems.
At first glance, due to the presence of a foreskin, it’s difficult to completely understand a male cat’s anatomy, especially in regards to a male cat’s penis. A male cat’s penis is characterised by its penil spines , also known as small keratinized spines, which resemble spikes.
These spines present themselves when a male cat mounts a female cat, and enters a female cat’s genital organ. Cat penile spines disappear back into the foreskin once cat mating is over.
An interesting fact about these spines is that they are not only present on the penis, but also on a cat’s tongue. A cat’s tongue has sharp papillae, which allow it to retain and rip flesh when eating, as well as to help it clean itself. This rough texture is noticable when a cat licks you.
Before we continue analyzing male cat anatomy, it’s important to discuss how to tell the gender of a cat .
You will first have to lift your kitten’s tail. Both male and female cats will present an anus hole just below the tail. Below this, towards the abdomen, you may see a line that will appear to form an I, this is a vertical slit, and means your kitten is a female . In male cat’s, however, you will notice a round lump which is further away from the anus than a female’s vulva. Additionally, as a male cat matures, you will notice a formation of its testicles.
If you have any doubts about your cat’s gender, we recommend consulting your veterinarian. It is incredibly important to be able to tell the gender of your kitten at an early age, specifically because heat and reproduction will vary according to a cat’s gender. In addition, we recommend neutering your cat before its first heat.
Cat mating will take place during a female’s fertile stage. Cats are seasonal polyesters , which means that they will remain in heat as long as there is enough sunlight. For practical purposes, cats are able to reproduce throughout the year.
Male cats do not experience heat stages like female cats. In fact, a male’s heat is initiated by a female cat’s pheromones. Cats in heat will meow unbearably, elevate their pelvis and urinate excessively (marking). Cats in heat may also present symptoms such as escape attempts, nervousness and general behavioral changes.
After the tom cat mounts the female, when it withdraws its penis, the penil spines trigger a hormonal stimulus that is responsible for the ovulation of the cat. In addition, these spines allow the penis to not slip during intercourse.
You may be wondering, is cat mating painful? No. These mating procedure simply triggers a neuroendocrine stimulus.
If you notice that your cat’s penis is sticking out on the exterior of its foreskin, this may be a sign of urinary disorder. Urinary infections are common in male cats. In general, you may also notice your cat licking this area, showing signs of discomfort when urinating, and the penis may change purple in color.
If you notice these such cat penis infection symptoms, we recommend consulting a veterinarin immediately, especially if your cat is not peeing at all. A cat urine infection can affect the kidneys and result in kidney failure if not treated in time, which can be fatal.
Cat urinary tract infections (UTI) may require prescribed medication. This infection may also be caused by stress, and in this case, increased environmental enrichment is encouraged.
Additional reproductive disorders in male cats may include:
If you notice anything abnormal in relation to your cat’s testicles or penis, we recommend consulting a veterinarian as soon as possible. For more, read my cat has swollen testicles - causes and treatment .

The cat penis is a rather elusive organ in your cat . This is mostly because, one, they are small (sorry, cat) and, two, it is concealed and well-protected . So, unlike dogs , cats do not walk around prancing their manhood.
Let us star by saying that mating is an excruciatingly painful experience. This is because the cat penis is barbed . The design of barbs on a cat penis is a form of reproductive competition .
The barbs work as brushes to remove any competitor´s semen. This is why you see that when it comes to mating, the female cat does not seem too happy about it. To this, add the fact that the tomcat will usually bite on the back of his partner, making the whole experience pretty unpleasant for her.
Kittens are not born with a barbed penis. It is during their adolescence that they develop them. This is at about 6 months old when they are ready to reproduce . In fact, if a cat is neutered before 6 months old, he will not develop barbs.
There are several purposes for the development of barbs in a cat´s penis.

Proestrus: Proestrus is the first part of the heat cycle and is when females start to attract nearby males. She is not quite ready to mate at this time, and you might not even know that she’s in heat. Proestrus take place over one to three days.
Estrus: The next stage of the cycle is the estrus stage. It lasts for about an entire week, and this is when your female becomes receptive to male cats because estradiol hormones are flooding her body.
Interestrus: Females that are unable to mate or get pregnant start to enter the interestrus stage. This period is one that happens between heats. She may act normally for a few days to three weeks before going into heat again.
Anestrus: This is the dormant phase in the cat’s heat cycle. Females exhibit no signs of being in heat until their breeding season starts again. As mentioned before, the breeding season is influenced by daylight and temperature. The number of times she goes into heat could be constant with regular exposure to light.

If you’ve ever witnessed two cats mating, you notice that the experience seems rather painful for the female. Female cats tend to make screaming noises during mating because of the male’s barbed penis containing keratinized penile spines . These aren’t the first male mammals to have barbs on their penises, but what purpose do they really serve? Keep reading to learn why a cat’s penis has evolved this way and how it assists during reproduction.
It’s not easy to thoroughly understand the male anatomy of a cat. The male cat penis is known for having penile spines that resemble small spikes and only present themselves when they mate with a female feline. They immediately disappear when the penis retracts back into the skin once the mating is over. These barbs are rough like a cat’s tongue. The texture of a cat’s tongue papillae helps to grip the food ripping the flesh from the bones while they eat. But that doesn’t seem useful for mating, right? What do the barbs do?
The barbs found on a cat’s penis are known to help aid in the female’s ovulation . Because female cats do not ovulate before intercourse, the spikes stimulate her vulva to let her body know that it is time to release an egg.
This seems a little brutal, but the barbs on the male’s penis keep the female from running away before the mating process has been completed. Cats are animals that prefer to be alone and run from pain. Mating is painful for female cats, not only because of the barbs but because the males also bite the back of their necks during intercourse.
Mating between cats takes place when a female is in heat or during her most fertile stage. Cats are seasonal polyesters and continue to go into heat based on both the hours of daylight and the temperature. Feral cat populations tend to breed year-round because they are exposed to more daylight.
Male cats don’t go into heat as females do. Intact males are stimulated whenever they sense a female cat pheromone. Both males and females meow excessively during this time, and the males tend to urinate or mark things around them. This is also when your cats tend to escape from the house most or have other types of behavioral changes.
Cat mating can happen year-round and several times throughout the year. A female cat reaches sexual maturity between 6 and 9 months of age, but some present their first heat as early as 4 months old. They also remain fertile for most of the remaining years of their life. If your feline isn’t spayed, she starts to go into heat and works through the four parts of the cycle.
Male kittens are not born with spines on their penises. If you neuter your male felines early on, they won’t develop them at all. Neutering removes the male’s testicles and stops them from developing the spines. This only happens under the influence of testosterone, they start developing at 3 months old and reach full size when they are around 6 months old.
With all the meowing that goes on, you think being in heat alone would be painful. It isn’t, but your kitty may need some special attention while she goes through her cycle.
Help your kitty take extra good care of herself while she’s in heat. Brush her more regularly and pet her to help her feel more at ease while her body goes through these changes.
Some females that are in heat because more aggressive and crankier than normal. Give her a space of her own where she can run off when she isn’t in a good mood.
A cat’s urge to hunt is lower when she is in heat and gives her a lot of pent-up energy. Play with her more often during these times.
More cat escapes happen when a female is in heat than when they’re not. Her instinct is to find a suitor, even if that means leaving your house. Take some precautions and ensure that there isn’t a way for her to get outside when you don’t want her to be.
Males and females both spray more when they are ready to mate. This has to do with marking territory and emitting pheromones. Encourage your queen to keep her spray in the litter box by cleaning it more often than normal.
Who knew that mating cats could be such a handful? While it may tear you apart to know that the mating process is painful from the spines on a male’s penis, this is a part of life, and there is a purpose for it. A male cat’s penis barbs ensure that conception is successful and that these cats can pass down their genes. If you aren’t interested in taking good care of your cats during this time, plus their new litters that are bound to show up, then get them spayed and neutered to prevent these things from happening.

One day I was thinking about the marvel that is the reproductive system and how ours differ from that of others, and the thought occurred to me, “Hmm, I wonder, do cats have a clitoris?” Since I’m a total science nerd, I had to research the answer to this question. Before long, I found myself down a marvelous rabbit hole of strange and awesome facts about cat genitalia — and because I’m such a nerd, I just had to share this all with you! So here are some of the things I learned about cat genitalia:
Intact male cats have rows of tiny, backward-pointing barbs on the head of the penis. When a male cat is neutered, the barbs disappear.
Like most mammals, a female cat’s clitoris is located on the inside. It’s very close to the opening of the vagina, but it’s not quite as exposed as the human clitoris. However, knowing the location of the clitoris, I can’t help but imagine that those penile barbs cause a pain unlike anything I’d ever want to experience.
A cat’s uterus has two “horns” coming off the main body of the organ. The kittens grow inside these uterine horns, and each developing kitten and its placenta is held in its place as it grows by a special sac called the allantois-cho
