[Q] Can I use CAT 5 cable outdoors ?
[A] CAT 5 Cable is constructed using a PVC jacket as the standard
covering material. This is equal to and superior in many cases
to the jacketing on the voice lines that run outside of most
of our homes. In many cases, you can use standard PVC jacket
CAT 5 or CAT 5e cable outdoors, without any complications. Just
be aware of the obvious considerations:
Location
- If cable is constantly exposed to sunlight and moisture, it
will degrade faster than cable that is protected by an overhang
or some other location that would keep it away from the elements
as bad.
Traffic
- If the cable is on the ground, being stepped on and having
vehicle or equipment traffic, it obviously will not be expected
to last very long.
Temporary
VS permanent - Is this a long-term, or temporary project? If
it is temporary, even the cheaper cable material would be able
to survive outdoor use for a short period of time.
You
can now purchase outdoor rated cable, that is designed specifically
to resist sunlight, moisture, and most other things. It is also
a little more resistant to foot traffic and getting "beat
up" a little. CAT 5 Cable Company can make outdoor rated

First off, I’m super pumped to have internet in my out building where I work finally. I shoot YouTube videos and had to put everything on a drive and bring in into the house to upload. Now I can do it right there. We also upgraded our speed recently, so the whole process got better. We have gig speed internet and after the full length of the cable I’m at 900+ Mbps download. My upload speed is actually the same as the house with no loss. I ran this thing from the hub in my living room, through the floor, across the basement ceiling, out the wall, under the door, through the yard in a small channel I dug for it, through my outbuilding wall, upstairs through the ceiling there, up through my desk, and finally into my computer. There were lots of places to get kinked. It did a few times so you have to be careful not to force it, but it undid and survived quite well. It’s been underground now for several months through rain, ice, and snow. It’s holding up wonderfully. I say get this. It’s great. I was going to try wifi boosters, but the signal loss was too much. This loses practically nothing.

As mentioned, it is a bit stiffer than other cables. But that should be expected. No complaints. I had to run a long cable from my utility pole to inside, this fit with a good 10 feet to spare.

This is good outdoor cable, so far. I used this to mount wire a IP security camera and networked door bell system on a home which had no possibility of attic access. It was burred about 1.5 feet down along the foundation in a flower bed. The cable is well constructed. It has the outer jacket, a ground drain wire, inner foil shield, then a plastic wrap around the 8 conductors, along with a thread. Plastic boots on the end are nice. I pulled one back to inspect the drain wire and shielded Cat5 jack, and they are properly soldered together. The cat5 end is not mold injected, which would make it very waterproof, but for my situation this was ok, as the ends are pulled into electrical boxes mounted in walls high above the ground level. The wire is very stiff. I had difficulty bending and plugging it into my devices inside the single gang electrical boxes i used. I had to very carefully arrange everything in the box, and have just a small amount of wire pulled into the box, in order to keep the wire from kinking and risk breaking the conductors. This wire was used to reduce the need for putting down conduit, and simplify the job. Install was very easy.

The cable was easy to install outdoors, partly buried and partly above ground. It is a bit stiff and not easily bendable, but this was not a problem. It seems well made but only time will tell about its weather proof quality. I have a 500 Mb/s internet system and my computers and iphones get over 300 Mb/s speed using wifi in my home. I used this cable to extend the system to my shop to a new wifi point on my Google mesh wifi system. The shop wifi point works well but the max speed is 100 Mb/s which is fine for my needs, but the speed loss over the 175 ft ethernet is greater than I expected. It is difficult to find out information about speed loss over long ethernet wires, some say there should be none and others say there is a slow down but it should be minimal for up to 300 ft wires. This could be an issue for people who have a gigabit speed system and actually need that high speed.

Seems to be excellent cable (and definitely 100 ft). I speed-tested it after pairing it with surge protectors on each end ("Outdoor Ethernet POE+ / RJ-45 Surge Protector (Shielded) for Thunder & Lightning Protection (Gigabyte)", bought with the cable from Ultra Spec) and I get the same throughput as anywhere else in the house. I have a mix of gigabit switching, Cat6 & Cat5e, and can't expect any faster than the slowest point. No surprises at all with this Cat5e. This cable handles like the external-grade RG6 coax that I've been using for 10+ years for my satellite TV. I had to replace that coax just once (in the past year) and if this cable lasts half as long it will be worth the price. I'd say it can be bent a little more than the coax without worrying about kinks. With the smooth outer shell it's actually easier to work with than most ethernet cables I've had my hands on. It straightened fairly easily by sliding it across the heel of my hand as I unrolled it. In short, it seems to be good quality exterior cable that's not awkward at all to handle.

This is a high quality cable. It is not, but in my experience standard old ethernet cable doesn't survive long outside. That said, when I purchased this cable initially I had purchased from BiH Electronics. The product I received from this is NOT the product described in this listing, and I returned it. That product was ethernet cable, but was lower quality. I believe that the individual conductors were only 26 awg (this is 24), did not have the grounded connector (it was a plan old 8P8C) sheathed but I do not believe shielded, and the overall diameter was considerably thinner. The exterior of that cable said "75C" on it which leads me to believe that the sheathing is meant to survive the heat better, but the exterior of the real product is thicker. In fact, with the real product the 4 pairs of 24awg cable are wrapped in PVC or some other sheathing, then wrapped in a metal shield and then wrapped again in another layer of sheathing that says on it that it's meant for direct burial. Buyer beware - if you want the real product get it from RiteAV as BiH is selling a lesser product for $5 cheaper.
