Top quality Cat5e CMX outdoor shielded cable at a reasonable price! I install Wi-Fi networks and camera systems and this particular cable is meant for outdoor runs. When I made my choice, I went by the following criteria: 1. The cable must be solid copper. Many of the runs I install are up to 300 feet and almost always to a PoE device (Power Over Ethernet). It is always a good idea to use solid copper conductors for PoE. 2. The cable must be outdoor rated, with FTP (Foil Twisted Pair) aluminum shielding plus an ESD ground drain wire 3. The cable must be properly documented so I can select the proper connector to use with it. I will not trust cable that is not fully documented up front. 4. The cable must meet all EIA/TIA specifications trueCABLE has properly documented the specifications on the cable and I selected the Platinum Tools EZ-RJ45 Cat5/6 Shielded connector with external ground. The two most critical specifications needed are the OD or outside diameter of the cable jacket and the OD of the conductor insulation, which basically means the copper conductor diameter PLUS accounting for the insulation around the conductor. It is NOT enough that a connector says “Cat5e compatible”, nor is it enough that a particular connector says it will work with “24 AWG” conductors. Each cable manufacturer will have different ODs for the cable and conductors. In this case, the cable OD is 6.80mm and the OD of the conductor insulation is 0.97mm. After careful research, I selected the connector based upon these dimensions plus needing a shielded connector. This cable is stouter than indoor-grade cable. The jacket is thick, plus the foil shielding and waterproof tape add to the thickness. There is a rip cord inside the cable, but I did not make use of that. You should use a cable stripper when terminating cable to RJ45 connectors. For such a thick cable, you are well advised to get a heavy-duty adjustable stripper. Here is how the cable is constructed from the inside out: • Four twisted pairs (eight solid copper conductors) • Waterblock tape (basically a tough cloth wrap that blocks water from reaching the conductors if the outer jacket should be breached) • ESD drain wire (ground wire) • Overall foil shield (not cheapo metallized mylar like other brands…) • Rip cord (meh…I never use it) • Outer UV protective outdoor rated jacket I took copious pictures, showing the inside of the cable plus at various points during the process of cable termination to a RJ45 connector. Overall, I am impressed with the quality of this cable

The cable had a recurring flaw half-way thru the spool to the end, so half of the cable was unusable. I emailed them about the problem and received no reply. Liked the first half of the spool, though. I had purchased one other time from this seller and that spool was good quality. Wish they were more responsive and helpful.

I'm leaving this review simply to get TrueCable to stop sending me messages requesting a perfect review. I ordered this product for security cameras. Its outdoor electrical wire, just like it says. 😁 it was installed 3 days ago and I have no info about durability as of now, and I did not install it. 4 stars for seemingly being an appropriate product for what I needed, 1 star docked for the 4 emails I got within a week requesting perfect reviews.

I laid two parallel runs of this cable in conduit 300 feet to our fixed wireless internet antenna. It works great when the ground is dry. For months I have been trying to figure out what the cause is for our poor performance when the weather is wet. I've swapped out routers, made direct PPoE connections to get the router of the equation, even paid for a new antenna. I just couldn't believe both runs would be bad. Finally I ran a new cable above ground and did a back-to-back test. Both cables I put in the ground two years ago are bad (only when it's wet), the above ground cable in the same equipment works perfectly well. That's the last time I buy anything from trueCable. It's going to be a huge job digging this up and running new wire--I don't think I can pull new cable the entire 300 feet. Greatly disappointed.

Cable came on easy to use wooden drum. Had no issues completing the connections over nearly 270 feet per run. Using this to run 2 different PTZ cameras plus 2 other cameras. Connections worked first time and fit the cable ends just right.

This cable honestly really sucks. Don’t get me wrong, it works just fine. But the way it handles is terrible. I ran this from the main house to the detached garage/studio apartment and it has no flexibility. Incredibly annoying to deal with. All that being said, the wires were stiff and strong and crimping them was relatively easy for being a RJ45. If you are on a budget and need something good for outdoors, deal with the handling issues, if you are not on a budget...go get something that wont make you curse the entire time.

Super strong and a bit heavy so you’ll get a workout deploying this in the field. You can also pretend you are WW2 guy wiring up a comm system or dynamite in a haunted old WW2 castle, while you unspool.

I purchased a 1000' spool for some out of spec (think: long) runs, and found there was a break in one of the pairs about 750' into the spool. If it weren't for this, i'd rate five stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars

Category 5 cable ( Cat 5 ) is a twisted pair cable for computer networks . Since 2001, the variant commonly in use is the Category 5e specification ( Cat 5e ). The cable standard provides performance of up to 100 MHz and is suitable for most varieties of Ethernet over twisted pair up to 2.5GBASE-T [1] [2] [3] [4] but more commonly runs at 1000BASE-T (Gigabit Ethernet) speeds. Cat 5 is also used to carry other signals such as telephone and video .

This cable is commonly connected using punch-down blocks and modular connectors . Most Category 5 cables are unshielded , relying on the balanced line twisted pair design and differential signaling for noise rejection.

The specification for category 5 cable is defined in ISO/IEC 11801 , IEC 61156 and EN 50173 .

The specification for category 5 cable was defined in ANSI / TIA/EIA-568-A , with clarification in TSB-95. [5] These documents specify performance characteristics and test requirements for frequencies up to 100 MHz.

The cable is available in both stranded and solid conductor forms. The stranded form is more flexible and withstands more bending without breaking. Patch cables are stranded. Permanent wiring used in structured cabling is solid-core. The category and type of cable can be identified by the printing on the jacket. [6]

The category 5e specification improves upon the category 5 specification by revising and introducing new specifications to further mitigate the amount of crosstalk . [7] The bandwidth (100 MHz) and physical construction are the same between the two, [8] and most Cat 5 cables actually meet Cat 5e specifications, though they are not specifically certified as such. [9] The category 5 was deprecated in 2001 and superseded by the category 5e specification. [10]

The Category 6 specification improves upon the Category 5e specification by extending frequency response and further reducing crosstalk. The improved performance of Cat 6 provides 250 MHz bandwidth. [10] Category 6A cable provides 500 MHz bandwidth. Both variants are backwards compatible with Category 5 and 5e cables.

Cable types, connector types and cabling topologies are defined by ANSI/TIA-568 . Nearly always, 8P8C modular connectors (often referred to incorrectly as RJ45 connectors [12] [13] [14] ) are used for connecting category 5 cable. The cable is terminated in either the T568A scheme or the T568B scheme. The two schemes work equally well and may be mixed in an installation so long as the same scheme is used on both ends of each cable.

Category 5 cable is used in structured cabling for computer networks such as Ethernet over twisted pair . The cable standard provides performance of up to 100 MHz and is suitable for 10BASE-T , 100BASE-TX (Fast Ethernet), 1000BASE-T (Gigabit Ethernet), 2.5GBASE-T , and 5GBASE-T . 10BASE-T and 100BASE-TX Ethernet connections require two wire pairs. 1000BASE-T and faster Ethernet connections require four wire pairs. Through the use of power over Ethernet (PoE), power can be carried over the cable in addition to Ethernet data.

Cat 5 is also used to carry other signals such as telephony and video . [15] In some cases, multiple signals can be carried on a single cable; Cat 5 can carry two conventional telephone lines as well as 100BASE-TX in a single cable. [16] [17] [18] [19] [20] The USOC/RJ-61 wiring standard may be used in multi-line telephone connections. Various schemes exist for transporting both analog and digital video over the cable. HDBaseT (10.2 Gbit/s) is one such scheme. [21]

The use of balanced lines helps preserve a high signal-to-noise ratio despite interference from both external sources and crosstalk from other pairs.

Most Category 5 cables can be bent at any radius exceeding approximately four times the outside diameter of the cable. [27] [28]

The maximum length for a cable segment is 100 metres (330 ft) per TIA/EIA 568-5-A. [29] If longer runs are required, the use of active hardware such as a repeater or switch is necessary. [30] [31] The specifications for 10BASE-T networking specify a 100-meter length between active devices. [32] This allows for 90 meters of solid-core permanent wiring, two connectors and two stranded patch cables of 5 meters, one at each end. [33]

Since 1995, solid-conductor UTP cables for backbone cabling is required to be no thicker than 22 American Wire Gauge (AWG) and no thinner than 24 AWG, or 26 AWG for shorter-distance cabling. This standard has been retained with the 2009 revision of ANSI TIA/EIA 568. [34]

Although cable assemblies containing 4 pairs are common, category 5 is not limited to 4 pairs. Backbone applications involve using up to 100 pairs . [35]

The distance per twist is commonly referred to as pitch. Each of the four pairs in a Cat 5 cable has differing precise pitch to minimize crosstalk between the pairs. The pitch of the twisted pairs is not specified in the standard. Measurements on one sample of Cat 5 cable yielded the following results. [36]

Since the pitch of the various colors is not specified in the standard, pitch can vary and should be measured for the batch being used if the cable is being used in a non-Ethernet situation where pitch may be critical.

Some cables are "UV-rated" or "UV-stable" meaning they can be exposed to outdoor UV radiation without significant degradation. [ citation needed ]

Plenum-rated cables are slower to burn and produce less smoke than cables using a mantle of materials like PVC. Plenum-rated cables may be installed in plenum spaces where PVC is not allowed. [39] [ self-published source? ]

Shielded cables ( FTP or STP ) are useful for environments where proximity to RF equipment may introduce electromagnetic interference , and can also be used where eavesdropping likelihood should be minimized.
