Why not donate your best booty call stories to a good cause? The Casual Sex Project , a new Tumblr run by NYU professor and sex researcher Dr. Zhana Vrangalova , wants you to share your no-strings sexcapades with the world, all in the name of science.
While you might not know her by name, you’re probably already familiar with Dr. Zhana’s work. Remember the study that almost singlehandedly destroyed the stigma surrounding casual sex that’s had the internet all abuzz these past few weeks? Vrangalova spearheaded that research, and now we all have a way to thank her for it.
The Casual Sex Project arose from years of academic sex study and was thrust into the world of the web as a result of Vrangalova’s most recent discoveries — Dr. Zhana found that while up to 80% of college-aged students are hooking up commitment-free, no one seemed to be talking about it. " My hope is that it’s shedding a light on this practice. I don’t think it’s necessarily a positive or negative experience for everyone .. . Sometimes it’s the best thing that ever happened to people, sometimes it’s the worst thing that ever happened to people," Vrangalova explained in a recent interview with Dazed Digital . "In some ways it’s an attempt to "de-taboo" the practice — but not with an agenda to show that it’s always a great or horrible thing."
While her recent revelatory research focused primarily on college students, The Casual Sex Project gives people of all ages and backgrounds a chance to voice their experiences with casual sex and contribute to Dr. Zhana’s immense research pool.
Participating in the project not only provides more fuel for Vrangalova’s fire, but also gives those engaged with the study a chance to absorb numerous fresh, profoundly personal perspectives on no-strings sex . Plus, who doesn’t love a good dirty story?

Whether it was a business trip one-night stand or a "bisexual bonobo" birthday party , Zhana Vrangalova wants to know all about your latest hookup.
The sex researcher and NYU instructor is behind The Casual Sex Project , a recently-launched website that asks people to anonymously submit their hookup stories. Vrangalova hopes that sharing these stories will help to demystify casual sexual encounters.
According to Vrangalova, most media coverage of hookup culture focuses on college students, providing a skewed view of who is doing what, when in their lives they are doing it, and whether these casual sex experiences are harmful. She told The Huffington Post in an email:
There is so much talk about the hookup culture these days, about hooking up completely replacing dating on college campuses and young people in general, about casual sex invading the sexual space and disrupting time honored traditions and norms. But most [people] rarely get to hear about specific casual sex experiences other than those of their closest friends, and thus have a very limited idea of what that may entail. So I thought it would be useful for people to have a place to share their stories of hookups, in a sort of structured and organized way, and to read about other people's experiences in this way.
Some research has suggested that casual sex is "bad" for women -- hooking up is linked to anxiety and depression , and "promiscuous" women are judged more harshly by their peers. According to Vrangalova, The Casual Sex Project does not seek to invalidate the experiences of people for whom this is true, but instead allows people a platform to discuss their own encounters regardless of how they felt about them in the end.
People interested in submitting their story fill out a questionnaire that asks about the sexual experience, activities involved, consent, contraceptive precautions, the best and worst thing about the hookup, and whether it was a positive or negative experience overall. "On The Casual Sex Project so far, most people have shared hookup stories they don't regret at all," Vrangalova said in a May 22 interview with Nerve .
Vrangalova hopes that the project will help educate people about the reality of the "hookup culture" -- namely, that casual sex experiences are incredibly variable, and not intrinsically bad for the people involved.
"Hookups are so often presented as black or white, good or bad, but it isn't this homogenous thing," Vrangalova told HuffPost. "There is such a plethora of activities, feelings, hopes and expectations, partner configurations and behaviors, outcomes, circumstances... I hope this project will help people see these nuances."

The Casual Sex Project is a collection of narratives regarding the sexual experiences of people who have engaged in some kind of casual sex at least once in their lives. The type of casual sex is categorized as one-night stand, fuck buddies, sex with an ex, first of many, friends with benefits, short fling, and group sex. The purpose is to boost awareness and understanding of non-college students who engage in casual sex, because too many formal research studies are based on the sexual behavior of traditional, young college students.
The Casual Sex Project is created by Dr. Zhana, a NYC-based sex researcher, educator, and NYU professor.
1. Casual sex is defined as any kind of non-committal sexual activity among two or more people.
2. The submissions are completely voluntary and extremely personal.
3. Some people have submitted more than one entry to the Casual Sex Project, and they admit doing so on their current entry.
4. Most entries are from USA, Europe, Australia, and Canada. The sample range limits to people who know how to write in English, have access to the Internet, are aware of the Casual Sex Project, and have the audacity to post about one's sexual experiences online.
5. Given that the entries are mostly submissions of supposedly real-life experiences, they may use a great helping of colloquialisms, which may not be readily understood by people who do not participate in casual sexual activities or people who are just unfamiliar with this sexual culture. Granted, the project and Urban Dictionary are great tools to learn colloquial sex terms, the stuff that your grade school teachers never teach you.
