Male to female transformation tips, advice, and inspiration for crossdressers and MTF transgender women. How to become the woman you are meant to be!
By Lucille Sorella in Fashion 223 Comments
Did you know that your clothes are the first thing people notice about you?
It’s true! And that means that the right clothing is critical to your female image.
In this article, I share 10 essentials that should be part of your feminine wardrobe. Here are the must-have transgender / crossdressing clothes you need to own!
Every woman should own a little black dress. It’s a wardrobe staple. A simple black dress in a flattering length can go from day to night and will never go out of style.
A great fitting bra is every girl’s “breast” friend. Here are 3 tips for choosing the right MTF bra:
Avoid the temptation to wear a white bra under white or lightweight fabrics – white tends to show through while nude blends in with your body.
A colorful scarf is a wardrobe must. Scarves are extremely versatile, particularly for trans women and crossdressers.
A scarf can be worn around the neck to disguise an Adam’s apple or draped over the shoulders to minimize the look of a broad upper body.
Shoes are your most important accessory. Classic pumps are sexy, feminine, and work well with many types of clothes. Black pumps with a 2″-3″ heel and rounded toe are classic and will give you the most mileage. (Choose a lower heel if you are tall.)
Bags are a status symbol among women, so it’s worth investing in a great shoulder bag. You don’t have to splurge on a designer bag, but look for a classy, upscale design that complements your existing wardrobe.
A waist cincher is a great way to reduce the belly for crossdressers and transgender women who tend to carry weight in the midsection. Here’s how to figure up the sort of waist cincher you’ll need:
Two simple skirts in neutral colors will give you almost endless options for mixing and matching with other items in your feminine wardrobe. Choose:
Bare legs might be trendy, but in cooler months, nothing beats the polished look of hosiery. Control top hose or tights are also great for helping flatten out the tummy. Go for classic black pantyhose or tights.
Jackets are endlessly versatile. Since they are more structured than other pieces, they’re great for figure shaping. Look for tailored jackets that accentuate the waist and add curves.
Styles of jackets that work well for crossdressers and transgender women include:
Avoid boxy jackets and shoulder pads as these can accentuate a square body shape and/or broad shoulders.
A sleek clutch can dress up even the most casual outfit and is a must for the evening. Clutches look more chic than shoulder bags at night and can really set your outfit apart.
These 10 transgender / crossdressing clothing pieces are a great place to start. Once you’ve covered the basics, the fun begins and you can add on items that reflect your own unique style.
Now it’s your turn to tell me about your must-have items. Share them in the comments below, or better yet, upload a selfie showing off your favorite outfit!

I’ve completely failed this course! I don’t have any of these except the basic bra, yet I’d rather go braless because I find it more comfortable. Oh well…
As I get older…lol…I have dropped the clincher for comfort, the nylons because they rip, and I have gone to the mini, VS bombshell bra and a loose top and soooo lovin life…huggs all!
Wonderful! Good survival tips. And remember, girls, they are just the essentials; you build upon it.
For example, when traveling light, your little black dress can also serve as a skirt when you wear a top over it.
I’m really big on scarves. It’s gratifying to see that tip. Only downside is that my nice necklaces stay home more often.
I like heels, but am really too tall, so they are a rare item for me. It’s nice to see that there are more tall women in the world nowadays.
Gotta do more with waist shaping. And a fitted jacket is something I just didn’t think about, here in Casual Town. Good idea.
A bit of a style tip: no matter how much you are compelled to mimic your mother’s
clothing styles, it would make you stand out more, if you want to blend in instead. Sadly, the same goes for the extreme glamorous or sexy look except in party or club situations.
Lucille,
I love your tips as always. My parents were in the women’s fashion business. So, I grew up with “Women’s Wear Daily”, Vogue, McCalls, all of it. And, I loved it! Your tips are so good especially for the dressy occasions. I started out with “what would I wear to work” as a guiding idea and built a seasonal wardrobe. I’m in Michigan. I need four season adaptability without going broke. I found moderate priced websites that work nicely for my needs and I get compliments often. I live my ‘feminine nature’ every day and night and I use your tips and various programs daily. You’ve given me some ideas to tune up my wardrobe as I am able. You have to look good to feel good! It has been such a blessing to have the opportunity to transition and you have been a blessing with the insight that you share. Thank you!
Ah, Joelle, you seem to be a sensible woman. Your more frugal approach leads me to recommend thrift stores, especially the Goodwill bin stores. Not only are prices usually more gentle on your budget, but shopping is so excitingly unpredictable! I’ve often bought things while uncertain of their suitability, fit, etc., and just redonate them if they don’t work. My problem is overdoing it!
Whenever I leave the house, I am always wearing the following:
1) Classic Curves Padded Panty
2) Waist Cincher
3) Glamorise Magic Lift Bra
4) Nude Panyhose
5) Mid-thigh length skirt or dress
6) 2-3 inch heels with matching handbag
I usually get compliments, and when getting dressed I always remember what Susan, my Mary Kay rep, has always told me, “You have beautiful legs. Show off your legs!” She has me using Mary Kay Toning Lotion every day after shower on my legs, and they look really nice when wearing pantyhose.
Tights and pantyhose are not fun to put on and are not fun when its potty time!
Garter belts are easy to use with nylon stockings and lots of styles to choose
from. Just wear a pair of pretty panties over the garter belt. Janice
Anybody know a good CASUAL outfit to go well with a pencil skirt
Western boots, T-shirt, western hat or flat cap, practical bag. The skirt adds just the right touch of style. I could have said baseball cap, but that’s WAY overdone! You can skip the bag with a vest with capable pockets, or jacket in season.
I have a red plaid pencil skirt that I match with a sleeveless turtleneck top. I can layer that with a blouse and sweater or jacket depending on the weather and event.
I have a white silk blouse with crinkle sleeves. This allows a blazer if you wish as well

Being a crossdresser’s pretty tough – there’s this thing that you want to do, but it’s (annoyingly, and stupidly) frowned upon by most people (or at least, the internal paranoiac seems to think so). It’s also hugely visible – it’s difficult to not stand out of the crowd when you’re 6’3 in clicky heels. And yet, that urge to wear what you want and not be shunned or shamed is pretty strong. So what do you do?
There are a few ways that I’ve battled with it out and about – and one thing I’ve found that somewhat sates the beast within is to wear stuff that’s pretty unisex, or just slightly over the fence into that other land.
From the top! Or, I suppose, the bottom:
Ok, so 4-inch heels are probably out of the question if you want to keep it on the down-low. What you’re going to have to do here is go pretty unisex.
Probably my favorite pair of shoes is a pair of pink converse low-tops that I own. I’m not a huge, raving, fan of pink, but these are awesome, pretty girly, but still entirely passable as male footwear also. In fact, pretty much any converse low-tops in traditionally-un-male colors works pretty well. Don’t be afraid to buy bright (green/yellow/pink/blue)!
So no one’s really going to be examining your socks on any real intimate basis, so you can probably wear what you want here. I generally opt for light-colored, knee-high argyle type-stuff. No one ever sees that but me, so I figure I’m probably all good.
You didn’t think I was going to say skirts, did you?!
There are a few options here – jeans are a huge and diverse arena to play around with, and women’s jeans are infinitely (ok, that’s not strictly true) varied in cut. Skinny jeans are pretty awesome here – not super skinny ones that might fall under the term ‘jeggings’ (which is an horrendous portmanteau, for the uninitiated, of ‘jeans’ and ‘leggings’) – only a select few can effectively pull those off, but rather, ones that hug the leg without being obscene. Levis 511’s fare well if you want something fairly unisex. Then there’s women’s jeans themselves – given the large range of cuts and fits, it might be worth meandering into Sears on a weekend and trying some one while it’s pretty empty. I like jeans that are a little flared at the bottom, but pretty close-fitting up-top. Pocket embellishments are awesome, but I’m yet to find a pair of jeans where they aren’t over-the-top.
Maybe I’m pretty atypical for a crossdresser, but underwear doesn’t really do it for me. I’m not into the frilly/lacy panties that some people are. Though maybe that’s more of a factor of being 100% certain that I’d look ridiculous in them (to me, it’s all about the look). That said… There are still options! American Apparel do some pretty awesome unisex underwear which comes in a load of colors, both masculine and feminine.
That said… It’s unlikely that people are going to be peeking at your underwear throughout the workday, so be as adventurous as you want here! Although if you bend over and someone grabs your exposed G-string, that’s all on you!
I have real trouble with tops. I’ve tried women’s tees, and sometimes they’re ok, and sometimes they’re just a little too tight and make me feel self-conscious. Brightly-colored t-shirts are probably the way to go, or at least, I think so. Some guys can pull off cardigans – and if I could, I’d probably do a lot of that. Old Navy has some pretty decent stuff for tops, although I sometimes find they’re a bit boring and frumpy.
I find that it’s pretty easy to incorporate something feminine into your masculine attire, no matter what the occasion. It’s pretty easy to do and satisfies enough that beast within so that I’m not tearing my hair out every five minutes desperately wailing at why Naughty Monkey stop making shoes at size 10…

We have a lot in common. I have a great need to have some article of feminine attire on most of the time. I think that it is a subtle reminder and affirmation that I am a CD. I wear pantyhose and panties daily (except when I expect to see a doctor or expect to be in a locker room). More often than in the past I will go out without socks over my hose. The other night my wife and I went to a restaurant and the only table available with a good view was a high table with high stools. Under my slacks I had on sheer beige pantyhose and sitting up high on the stools there was no way it could be concealed. At first it kept me a bit on edge but after a while I had that ‘peaceful easy feeling’ that I get from wearing woman’s clothes.
Until recently all of my woman’s shoes were high heels. I recently picked up a black and brown pair of low heeled tassled woman’s loafers. Perhaps they are similar to men’s loafers but I know they are a ladies shoe and that is what matters.

Thanks for this. Stealth crossdressing is becoming more fashionable in more than one sense of the word. De rigour for women why not for metrosexual men?
Got some nice tips thanks. I’ll be back soon.
Hi Liz, your suggestions for how to cross dress sneakily are right on. I wear woman’s cloths all the time except when I have to wear a “uniform” for the male group that I’m a part of. At 72 my desire to cross dress has increased to the point where I avoid men’s cloths as much as possible.
My wife, who only tolerates my “gift” to a small degree, gave me a pair of men’s blue denim pants and two pair of men’s underwear for Christmas. I haven’t figured out how to return the pants yet for woman’s and I know that I won’t wear the underwear.
My goal for 2017 is to provide my wife with more information on cross dressing so she will be more likely to accept who I am.
Thanks for advice I bought some skinny jeans to try in school from Walmart wish me luck
