Street casting, also known as "street scouting" or "street talent scouting," or ever so casually referred to as finding 'real people' is a casting method that involves finding potential talent that are non-actors or in everyday settings, environments, workplaces or possessing certain skills (introducing the real mermaid).
Last time I worked on a feature film which did street casting we ended up with 7 casting assistants plus the casting director and the director hitting the streets and it still took them several months to find the cast. We ended up paying a lot more for this process than we would have paid a casting director for doing traditional casting.
