A jarring scene left some trauma seemingly up to interpretation.
• Euphoria 's sixth episode focused on McKay. • One scene showed something terrible happening to McKay, though it's not totally clear what. • We do our best to sort through what happened.
Much like LOST and Orange is the New Black before it , Euphoria centers on a different character each episode. In Euphoria 's sixth episode, it was Christopher McKay's (known simply as McKay) turn.
McKay ( Algee Smith ) dates Cassie (Sydney Sweeney), but their relationship has been in a rocky place—she's still in high school, and he's off at college, for starters. Plus, in the episode that took place at the carnival a few weeks back, he hesitated to call her his girlfriend—which led her to make out with a classmate named Daniel on a carousel (the same Daniel who dumped Kat during her youth flashback).
While the episode, titled "The Next Episode," gave us a taste of McKay's own personal backstory—a very Friday Night Lights- esque story about coming to terms and adjusting expectations about professional athlete dreams—the scene that really got viewers confused and riled up took place midway through the episode.
The entire episode takes place during Halloween, at multiple parties. The first night, Cassie is accompanying McKay to a college party, dressed as Alabama Worley , Patricia Arquette's character from the 1993 Quentin Tarantino-written film True Romance . McKay feels uncomfortable with her costume—the episode also delves into his idea of "having" the girl that everyone else wants—and asks her to change into a football jersey.
The two eventually return to McKay's dorm where they began to get intimate. (It should be established that the early part of the episode made it clear that McKay is having a tough time acclimating to the college football environment; used to being the best, he has trouble adjusting to being at the same talent level as thousands of other college football players.)
When McKay is getting intimate in his dorm with Cassie, we see several masked men enter the room behind him. He and Cassie are both naked, and the masked men rip McKay off the bed, and pin him to the ground, yelling "McGay!" at him.
As Cassie screams at them to stop, they keep him pinned to the ground, chanting and screaming for their fraternity ("Sig Pi Nu, bitch!"). While the camera cuts don't provide conclusive evidence to what happened to him—if he were sexually assaulted, it would not be out of the realm of possibility, given the history of hazing in college and college sports—it's safe to assume that something traumatic took place.
After the masked guys leave, McKay stays on the ground for a few moments, before getting up and crying in the bathroom for even longer. Cassie is seen reflecting, texting her sister, "He just like started crying. I felt so bad."
Based on the context that we get in the aftermath of the incident, it's clear that McKay was violated in some way. Again, it comes through in Cassie's words: "I can't believe they did that to you, McKay," she says when he finally emerges from the bathroom. "It was so fucked up."
"Cassie, it's all good," he says back, with his face and expressions telling a different story. "It's not that big of a deal."
What follows this interaction is a continuation of their sex scene from earlier, but it's clear that both parties have been affected—McKay is cold and distant, and Cassie is also clearly traumatized.
It's not clear what exactly happened to McKay, and that was a deliberate choice made by the show's producers and creator. But what we know for certain is that this was a traumatic event, and McKay was taken advantage of.
Next week's episode centers on Cassie, so this story will surely continue.

A teenage girl was left needing surgery after she claimed she was drugged and gang raped by 10 men at her own birthday party, according to reports.
The 15-year-old was celebrating her birthday with friends and family in the city of Rosario in Argentina when she was brutally attacked, Argentine newspaper La Nación reports.
An 18-year-old man, who reportedly knew the victim and lived nearby, has been accused of drugging her during the celebrations on December 12.
He allegedly gave the girl a drink which appeared to be alcohol before taking the victim to his house, according to reports.
An eyewitness said the victim was stumbling as she left her family home with the suspect, local newspaper Infobae reports.
Family and friends at the party started looking for the teenager when they realised she had disappeared and reportedly found her wandering in the street near her home several hours later.
Disorientated and covered in blood, the girl claimed she had been raped by 10 men at the suspect’s house before collapsing, according to La Nación .
The teen was rushed to the Eva Perón Hospital, where doctors reportedly found her injuries to be compatible with a violent sex attack.
Dr Jorge Kilstenin said the girl underwent an operation due to her “considerable genital injuries” and received two blood transfusions, Todo Noticias reports.
“It is evident there was a situation of sexual violence,” Dr Kilstenin said, adding that the victim remains in hospital.
According to the newspaper, the girl’s mother told local broadcaster L28 , “We were celebrating her birthday with family and friends. He put something in her drink and took her out of my house.
“He wasn’t invited, nor was he her boyfriend.”
She claimed her daughter was drugged when she found her covered in blood in the street.
“If I didn’t get her to hospital, she would have died in my arms from all the things they did to her,” she said.
She added, “I’m not going to stop until justice is done.”
According to Pagina 12 , Ramiro Gonzalez Raggio, head of the city’s Sexual Crimes Unit, said he is confident at least five people were involved in the gruesome attack.
“We can confirm with reliable evidence that five people participated,” he told the newspaper.
Two of the perpetrators are reported to be the brothers of the 18-year-old suspect, while a second suspect, a 26-year-old man, has also been arrested for participating in the attack.
The 18-year-old suspect’s mum could also be prosecuted as local sources claim she knew the attack was taking place and did nothing to stop it.
The girl reportedly told psychologists she briefly remembers one suspect on top of her and also claims to have heard the mum of one of the suspects saying: “They are going to report you for what you have done.”
Mr Raggio said the authorities believe they have identified the culprits, but cops have not ruled out the possibility of further suspects.
Cops are also investigating whether the victim was drugged before she was raped, but Raggio said detectives believe the girl collapsed due to the amount of alcohol she drank at the party.
The suspects could face 20 years in prison, according to Infobae .
The main suspect’s house was also set on fire by neighbours during protests after the attack, the newspaper reports, which might have destroyed key evidence in the case.
