Casper Ruud Triumphs Over Djokovic in Paris

Casper Ruud Stuns Djokovic in Thrilling Roland Garros Semifinal

Paris, June 7, 2024 – In a match that will be remembered as one of the greatest upsets in recent tennis history, Norway’s Casper Ruud defeated 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic in a five-set epic to reach his third French Open final.

The 25-year-old Ruud, known for his relentless baseline game and heavy topspin forehand, overcame the Serbian legend 6-7(5), 7-5, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 in a grueling four-hour-and-28-minute battle on Court Philippe-Chatrier.

Djokovic, the defending champion and world No. 1, appeared in control early, taking the first set in a tiebreak. But Ruud refused to back down, clawing his way back with fearless aggression and pinpoint accuracy. The Norwegian saved three break points in the decisive fifth set before breaking Djokovic’s serve in the final game, sealing the victory with a blistering crosscourt backhand.

'I still can't believe it,' Ruud said in his post-match interview. 'Novak is the toughest opponent in the world, and to beat him here at Roland Garros means everything. I just kept fighting and believing.'

Ruud, who lost to Rafael Nadal in the 2022 final and Djokovic in the 2023 final, will now face either Carlos Alcaraz or Alexander Zverev in Sunday’s championship match. A victory would make him the first Norwegian man to win a Grand Slam singles title.

Djokovic, who was chasing a record-extending 25th major, praised Ruud’s performance. 'He played with incredible heart today,' the Serb said. 'He deserved the win.'

Tennis fans worldwide are now eagerly awaiting what could be a historic moment for Ruud and Norwegian sport. Will he finally claim his maiden Grand Slam? All eyes will be on Paris this Sunday.
