‘Romance’: But What Does She Really Want?
Long out of distribution, Catherine Breillat’s 1999 film returns, newly restored, as the centerpiece of a retrospective on the filmmaker at the IFC Center.

Sixteen years before “50 Shades of Grey” normalized the spectacle of female masochism onscreen, Catherine Breillat’s “ Romance ” pushed buttons. Breillat, the self-proclaimed “pariah of French cinema,” has said she designed her film as a “war machine against censorship” — although, as it was inspired by a bold speech on artistic freedom and women’s rights she delivered in Iran in 1997, a better term might be jihad.
“Romance” may be unrated, but it would accept a scarlet “X” as a badge of honor. Long out of distribution, it returns on Friday, newly restored, as the centerpiece of an 11-film Breillat retrospective at the IFC Center .
Marie (Caroline Ducey), a slight young primary schoolteacher, is trapped in a frustrating relationship with a narcissistic male model, Paul (Sagamore Stévenin), who is too bored to bother making love or even accept her advances. Humiliated by his passive sadism, she looks beyond their antiseptic bedroom for gratification with graphic, if mixed, results. A fling with a hunky pickup (the Italian porn star Rocco Siffredi) notwithstanding, her most satisfying — which is to say her least unsatisfying — tryst is with her middle-aged school principal, Robert (François Berléand).
Breillat may be as deadpan as her sad-faced heroine, but “Romance” does not lack a comic dimension. Robert is a solicitous sadist with a treasure chest of bondage accessories and an active fantasy life, boasting that he’s bedded 10,000 women including “Grace Delly.” (Yeah, right.) “There is no masculine psychology in my cinema,” Breillat has explained. “There is only the resentment and desires of women.” Thus, even when this boudoir pedant has Marie bound, gagged and twisted into a pretzel, the operative word is not abjection but ambivalence. Marie never stops analyzing her conflicted responses: “Why do the men who disgust us understand us better?”
The one constant in Marie’s transgressive quest for sexual autonomy is that all men, with the possible exception of the loquacious Robert (whom she confounds by telling him “I don’t like having to say things”), always let her down. After a session of what she calls “wallowing for the joy of wallowing” turns truly awful, she asks herself (and perhaps Dr. Freud) if what she really wants is to meet Jack the Ripper.
Featuring male and female full frontal nudity, along with a variety of sex acts sometimes shown in clinical close-up, “Romance” is nothing if not explicit, not least in its philosophizing. “It’s doubtful that the film’s intellectual aspects would command the same attention if the camera did not make the actors’ genitals as familiar as their faces,” the New York Times critic Janet Maslin wrote when the movie was released in the United States in 1999. Maybe that’s the point. The body is a mystery to the mind.
However provocative, “Romance” is not Breillat’s most radical film. That would be her 2004 “Anatomy of Hell” (the ultimate in erotic body-horror, currently in distribution limbo and not included in the IFC retrospective). But in its stunning dialectic between tasteful and tasteless, “Romance” is surely her most insolent. For some, the truly shocking scene in the movie might be the child birth.
Feb. 11-17 at the IFC Center in Manhattan, ifccenter.com .

More stories to check out before you go
Notable for featuring the very first instance of an erect penis in
a mainstream film, French director Catherine Breillat’s Romance follows a young
woman who embarks on a journey of sexual self-discovery after her boyfriend
refuses to have sex with her.
Banned in several countries including Ireland and Singapore for
its graphic unsimulated content, the movie was perhaps surprisingly released
uncut in the often prudish United Kingdom by the BBFC under the reasoning that
it was ‘very French’.
Real-life porn star Rocco Siffredi – aka the ‘Italian Stallion’
and star of such films as Bend Over Brazilian Babes 2 and Buttman’s Big Tit
Adventure 3 – brought his years of experience to the film but it wasn’t enough
to impress every critic, some of whom denounced it as clinical, un-titillating
and even sleep-inducing. Well, you can’t win them all Catherine.

Helen Jones hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
