MT to me: " I recently was hired as IC at a spa that does pregnancy massage exclusively using the table that allows the mother to lay face down.They do not allo … w therapists to do side lying. Based on my training with you, I have refused to do prenatal sessions. Any suggestions on how I might open my employers' minds?"
My answer: You are not alone as a MT whose employers' policies and/or equipment does not provide the safety and effectiveness that you learned to deliver in my workshop. It's a hard ethical position to be in. What I suggest is that you show them the sections in chapter two of my book that explain the rationales for the positioning guidelines I outline there. The primary evidence behind my recommendations comes from the anatomy and physiology of pregnancy, documented factors that contribute or reduce perinatal pain as well as increase risks during pregnancy and the ACOG recommendations that pregnant women should primarily sleep and rest on their sides. There are no studies of any type or size that zero in on MT positioning.
I usually recommend that you center your discussion around the many advantages of sidelying positioning rather than taking an alarmist attitude that prone and/or cut-out tables are highly dangerous options. They are potentially dangerous, but often less effective for many women's needs. Isn't the goal to be the most effective possible?
