Carles Puigdemont Claims Inmunidad Amid Intensifying Legal Showdown

Carles Puigdemont, the former president of Catalonia, has once again thrust himself into the international spotlight by asserting that he is immune from extradition to Spain. The claim comes amid a mounting legal clash that has drawn in the European Union, the Spanish government, and even human rights advocates. In a press briefing held in Brussels, Puigdemont told reporters that he is protected under international law, a position that could complicate Spain’s pursuit of the former leader, who remains in exile in Belgium.

The origins of Puigdemont’s legal struggle can be traced back to the events of 2017, when Catalonia held an independence referendum that the Spanish constitutional court deemed illegal.
