Carla Gugino is an Italian-American actress who portrayed Lucille in the film adaptation of Sin City (film) .

Carla was born in Sarasota, Florida. Moved with her mother to Paradise, California, when Carla was just five years old. During her childhood, they moved many times within the state. But she remained a straight-A student throughout high school and graduated as valedictorian. A major modeling agency discovered Carla in San Diego and sent her to New York to begin a new career when she was 15. New York was more than she could handle at that young age, so she returned to LA in the summer, modeling and enrolling in an acting class at the suggestion of her aunt, Carol Merrill, known from Let's Make a Deal (1963). During her free time, Carla enjoys yoga, traveling and spending time with her friends in Los Angeles.

Carla Gugino Turned Down This Big Role To Star In Sin City

By Darian Lusk / Dec. 9, 2020 8:08 pm EDT

Carla Gugino almost "haunted" the box office in a surprising role way before she starred in The Haunting of Bly Manor.
If you don't know who the versatile Bly Manor actor is at this point, you probably haven't flipped through Netflix in a hot minute. Aside from playing The Storyteller in the streaming platform's spookily popular horror series — based on the novella The Turn of The Screw and the successor to 2018's The Haunting of Hill House — Carla Gugino has been in a ton of popular projects. She starred as the handcuffed heroine in 2017's thrilling and powerful Gerald's Game (also directed by the Haunting series ' Mike Flanagan ) and as Daisy in the Cinemax series Jett . But you've probably seen Gugino much earlier, perhaps without realizing it. The star perhaps most famously appeared in the Spy Kids franchise as the mom (and secret spy), Ingrid Cortez. As those films each grossed over $100 million globally, per Box Office Mojo , there's a good chance that role may ring a bell. She also played wife Emma across from Dwayne Johnson in San Andreas . Yup, the rising star has a few blockbusters under her belt, too!
But missing out on roles is a natural part of the Hollywood experience. And even though things worked out for Gugino , as she's on the cusp of widespread fame now, there's one part she didn't get — said no to, in fact — that must have hurt. Scroll on down to find out the role Carla Gugino passed on.
So what was the role that Carla Gugino reportedly turned down? According to TV Over Mind , that was to play Vin Diesel's love interest, and superior officer, in the babysitter-based action-comedy The Pacifier (or "manny-based" in this case, as Diesel stars as the film's unlikely babysitter/Navy SEAL). The role in the 2005 flick ultimately went to Brittany Snow. Interestingly enough, Gugino instead chose to star ... in Sin City, opposite Mickey Rourke. As Lucille in the 2005 comic book adaptation, the actor ignited the screen, rocking a bob haircut in the scintillating, if smaller gig. But Sin City's Robert Rodrigues also directed Spy Kids , so she stuck with her (literal) guns.
That said, The Pacifier grossed $200 million while Sin City grossed $150 million . So it's worth wondering, would Carla Gugino's stock in Hollywood have risen faster if she had "pacified it up" and chosen the meatier and audience-friendly role instead of the more nuanced one?
Things worked out in the end, but it's interesting to wonder where Carla Gugino would be if she'd chosen the other film!

Carla Gugino played a major role on Spin City during season 1 only to abruptly depart halfway through - here's why she left the hit sitcom.
Carla Gugino played a major role in the first half of Spin City season 1 before departing - here's why she left the show. Spin City is a sitcom that debuted in 1996 and revolved around Mike Flaherty (Michael J. Fox, Back To The Future ), the deputy mayor of New York. Its Mike's job to spin and manage the mayor's many gaffes and the conflicting personalities of the people he works with. He also has to balance his personal life with work, which isn't always the easiest task.
Spin City was a great star vehicle for Fox but it also featured a talented supporting cast, including Barry Bostwick, Michael Boatman, Richard Kind, and Connie Britton ( American Horror Story ). Sadly, Fox was forced to step down from the show following season 4 due to his Parkinson's disease symptoms becoming more severe. This led to the introduction of Charlie Sheen ( Two And A Half Men ) in season 5 as new deputy mayor Charlie Crawford, with Mike having stepped down to take the fall for a Mafia-related scandal. The show would run for two more seasons and came to an end with season 6 in 2002.
The first season of any sitcom usually involves the showrunners finding the tone of the series, which is why certain shows like The Office or Parks And Recreation took a little while to find their feet. This was also true of Spin City , with the first half of season 1 focusing on Mike's romantic relationship with journalist Ashley, played by Carla Gugino ( San Andreas ). Their romance was a big part of early episodes, only for Gugino to leave halfway through the season.
DreamWorks stated at the time Gugino exiting Spin City was a mutual decision, which was apparently due to the writer's wanting to focus more on the mayor's office side of the show. Ashley's exit also meant they could create future love interests for Mike. Gugino is said to have been focused on building a film career too, and she would soon go on to leading roles in movies like Snake Eyes with Nicolas Cage ( Mandy ). It appears the split truly was amicable, with Gugino later returning as Ashley for a cameo in season 3 episode "It Happened One Night."
Carla Gugino has since gone on to several acclaimed performances in movies and shows like Gerald's Game and Netflix's The Haunting Of Hill House . While its a pity she left Spin City so early, the series didn't give her much of a chance to shine either, and she later found parts better suited to her talents.
It's pronounced Paw-rick, not Pad-raig. Now that's out of the way, a brief introduction. Padraig has been writing about film online since 2012, when a friend asked if he'd like to contribute the occasional review or feature to their site.

A part-time hobby soon blossomed into a career when he discovered he really loved writing about movies, TV and video games; he even (arguably) had a little bit of talent for it. He has written words for Den of Geek, Collider, The Irish Times and Screen Rant over the years, and can discuss anything from the MCU - where Hawkeye is clearly the best character - to the most obscure cult b-movie gem, and his hot takes often require heat resistant gloves to handle.

He's super modern too, so his favorite movies include Jaws, Die Hard, The Thing, Ghostbusters and Batman.
