Over the years, the iconic opening title sequence for Game of Thrones has evolved to reflect new developments in the show’s story and include new locations that are featured. The latest update for Season 8 — or at least a small portion of it — was spoiled by one of the show’s stars during Wednesday night’s official premiere in New York City. It just might spell doom for House Umber. (Who? We’ll get to that in a minute.)
Late Wednesday night, actress Carice van Houten, who plays the Red Witch Melisandre on Game of Thrones , shared a video to her Instagram Story from the Season 8 title sequence (it was later reshared on Reddit ). The familiar Game of Thrones theme plays over the usual three-dimensional animated map of the show’s world as clockwork mechanisms change locations based on the events of the episode. (In many cases, the title sequences offer mild spoilers for what’s about to happen.)
The video begins south of the Wall, looking north at the huge portion that was blasted away by the Night King’s new ice dragon last season. Panels of snow turn to ice, flipping creepily south towards a castle upon a hill.
That’s probably Last Hearth, the home of House Umber, and this is probably an indication that the Night King’s army reaches the castle in Episode 1. Jon Snow even remarks late in Season 7 that Last Hearth will be the first obstacle for the Army of the Dead, so it should come as no surprise.
The show has never actually visited Last Hearth, but House Umber are historically Stark bannermen. Greatjon Umber was an ally of Robb Stark back in Season 1. (You might remember him as the guy who really wanted to be in the vanguard until Grey Wind bit a few of his fingers off.) Rickon, Osha, and Shaggydog also travel to Last Hearth in Season 3 offscreen, and we don’t see them again until Season 6 when Smalljon Umber hands them over to Ramsay Bolton to broker an alliance.
The young Ned Umber later recommits to House Stark in Season 7 alongside Alys Karstark, swearing fealty to Jon Snow as the King in the North. As far as we know, Ned could still be at Winterfell by the time Season 8 picks up, but it’s equally as possible that he’s back at Last Hearth, where he’s the lord.
All of these signs could spell doom for House Umber.
Even if Ned is back at his family’s ancestral home, the Night King and his armies will sweep through with ease. The epic Battle of Winterfell is all but confirmed for Episode 3, but opening Season 8 on some devastating event like the destruction of Last Hearth would be a dramatic way to kick off the final season — and it definitely seems inevitably, anyway.

In a recent interview with Insider, actress Carice Van Houten looked back on her run as ‘the red woman’ Melisandre on HBO’s Game of Thrones , and asked why so many of her scenes had to involve nudity.
Since the actress was no stranger to filming sex scenes by the time she landed her role as the mysterious sorceress of Essos, she wasn’t particularly surprised to discover that one of her very first scenes on the show saw her disrobe and engage in intercourse with co-star Stephen Dillane, who played the stern and sturdy would-be-king Stannis Baratheon.
Reflecting on the now-finished mega production through the lens of the #MeToo movement, however, Van Houten wonders why her character – by all means one of the most compelling and alluring of the entire cast – had to show as much skin as she did.
“When the #MeToo movement started, that’s when it started sinking in for me,” she told the reporters over at Insider. “And it did sort of change my perspective on my whole career, not just Game of Thrones . In retrospect, I thought, ‘Why did that scene have to be nude? Why was that normal?’ I did question things and it was not so much that I was blaming anyone, but that’s just how we evolved, and just how the movement affected me.”
Her point is a valid one, especially considering that Game of Thrones was always renowned (and criticized) for its large amounts of nudity . But while the showrunners – alongside Westeros creator George R.R. Martin – claimed these scenes made the story realistic, more often than not these bits constituted little more than cheap marketing ploys that appealed to an entertainment culture which had for long oriented itself through the eyes of men.
The problem of nudity on screen is, of course, a multifaceted one, and the actress noted she considers all its sides, both good and bad.
“I was always very liberal and I defended nudity because I thought, ‘Why can you have a machine gun and not see a nipple?’ I thought it was so weird.”
Since then, however, Van Houten has been confronting her own feeling of “‘that’s what the audience wants’ and not feeling confident to say, ‘Wait a minute, why would I have to do that?’ It’s just our conditioned behavior as females, and not thinking about what that means.”
While HBO is hard at work on multiple Game of Thrones spinoffs, the vast majority of which we can expect to deliver exactly the kind of exploitative nudity that Carice Van Houten is calling into question, the actress herself has been making content that challenges this archaic attitude, like the Dutch production Instinct , which she says was conceived as a critique of the “male gaze.”

Unfortunately for Palmer, it's now Scream Queens that may get at least slightly overshadowed if her photos do come to fruition.
