Capitals Edge Canadiens in Thrilling Overtime Victory

Washington, D.C. – April 28, 2025 – The Washington Capitals secured a hard-fought 3-2 overtime win against the Montreal Canadiens in a thrilling matchup at Capital One Arena on Sunday night. The victory keeps the Capitals in the playoff hunt, while the Canadiens’ late-season struggles continue.

Overtime Heroics Seal the Deal

After a back-and-forth battle in regulation, the game was decided in overtime when Capitals’ star Alex Ovechkin blasted a one-timer past Montreal goaltender Sam Montembeault just 1:32 into the extra period. The goal, set up by a slick pass from Dylan Strome, sent the home crowd into a frenzy and marked Ovechkin’s 30th of the season.

'Montembeault played great, but we kept pushing,' Ovechkin said post-game. 'It’s a big two points for us.'

Back-and-Forth Battle

The Canadiens struck first, with Cole Caufield netting his 25th goal of the season on a breakaway in the opening period. The Capitals responded in the second when Tom Wilson deflected a point shot from John Carlson to tie the game.

Montreal regained the lead early in the third after Nick Suzuki capitalized on a power play, but Washington answered just minutes later as Connor McMichael buried a rebound to force overtime.

Key Performances

Sam Montembeault (MTL) made 34 saves in a losing effort.

Charlie Lindgren (WSH) stopped 28 shots, including a crucial breakaway save on Caufield in OT.

John Carlson logged over 25 minutes of ice time and had two assists for Washington.

Playoff Implications

With the win, the Capitals move within two points of the final Eastern Conference wild-card spot. Meanwhile, the Canadiens, already eliminated from postseason contention, showed resilience but couldn’t close out the game.

'Tough loss, but I liked our effort,' said Montreal coach Martin St. Louis. 'We’re building for the future.'

What’s Next?

The Capitals hit the road to face the Boston Bruins in a critical matchup Tuesday, while the Canadiens return home to take on the New York Rangers.
