Canteen workers in Covington elementary school were diagnosed with hepatitis A

A cafeteria worker at John G. Carlisle Elementary School on Tuesday was diagnosed with hepatitis A, according to a news release from the Northern Kentucky Health Department.
The employee is likely to work while contagious.
Health department officials said Carlisle Elementary staff were made aware of the diagnosis and encouraged to get vaccinated against the virus immediately.
Students and family members who eat canteen food between November 13 and December 3 must also be vaccinated if they have not already done so, even though the possibility is low: Kentucky school children are required by law to receive vaccinations before the start of the 2018 school year to attend.
Health workers spend Tuesday night cleaning the school and throwing away items that have been touched by infected workers, including pots and pans.
According to representatives of the Northern Kentucky Health Department, Steve Devine, this is a very careful exercise and not in response to severe threats. Investigation found workers in schools had followed the proper sanitation protocol before the diagnosis of a single employee.
"This is really a low risk for the people involved, minus co-workers who definitely need to get a shot," he said. "You don't know where the exposure will come tomorrow."
The news arrived in the midst of a viral explosion throughout the state, which attacks the liver and can cause symptoms such as yellowing of the skin, loss of appetite, fever, nausea and abdominal pain. Northern Kentucky has seen 208 hepatitis A cases since early 2018; Kentucky as a whole has seen more than 2,800.
Anyone who is worried about contracted hepatitis A must receive the vaccine, which is given twice six months. Meanwhile, they must be careful to wash their hands carefully with soap and hot water, including under their fingernails.
