After having online chat room chats for three weeks, "Thonggrrrl14" convinces "Lensman319" to meet in person in a public place, they being up front that they are a fourteen year old girl and thirty-two year old man respectively. They are indeed precocious fourteen year old Hayley Stark and thirty-two year old photographer Jeff Kohlver. Their interactions, including their meeting, are laced with indirect sexual innuendo, most specifically on Hayley's part, although Jeff is clear also in an indirect manner that he does not have sex with minors. Regardless, Hayley is further able to convince Jeff to continue their face-to-face at his place. There, both Hayley and Jeff's true intentions come to light, their meeting which was no accident on either side, and the intentions which may be incompatible and have serious and deadly consequences.—Huggo
Due to the controversial nature of the film, the budget was kept under a million dollars so the studio wouldn't ask to change anything.
Jeff's facial hair is noticeably thicker in the opening coffee shop scene than it is later in the day.

Well. That was disturbing. Though it is not one to recommend for "Family Night," Hard Candy offers an intriguing one-time viewing thanks to the effectiveness of its two-man show approach. Let's make that a one-man, one-girl show. I don't need a rash of emails reminding me of my chauvinism.

What the filmmakers have done is said, "Hey, Patrick Wilson! Ellen Page! We're placing the two of you in a restricted space and putting the entire movie on your shoulders. Best of luck!" Granted, I'm paraphrasing, but this is no exaggeration. There are a total of five people in the movie, and only Wilson and Page are given more than five minutes of screen time. Given this challenge, the two thespians more than hold their own.

I don't know if Wilson should take this as a compliment, but he's very convincing as a dangerously innocent-seeming pedophile. What makes him so creepy is his charm. He's a smooth, suave sexual predator. Most young girls are smart enough to do wind sprints the moment they see a dirty, unkempt man who looks to be carrying more diseases than Paris Hilton.

But Wilson is a good-looking, successful photographer. He can't be bad, right? "You look older than you are, and you certainly act older than you are," he tells Hayley, perfectly manipulating her young, fragile emotions. And hey, he can't be dangerous. After all, he obviously has the most innocent of intentions! Why else would he reassure her that he's aware of the legal boundaries? She's puddy in his hands.

This all starts quietly enough, but once they get to his house gears are shifted and everything goes haywire. That's all I'm revealing regarding the story, but I do have to give kudos to Ms. Page who turns in an impressive performance. I did feel she was a bit too precocious and world-wise at times, but she still does a great job showcasing a wide range of emotions of this potential young victim.

Despite the interesting concept of the two-person show, it clearly has its limitations. At 103 minutes this is just way too long. After a while it becomes too obvious that certain scenes and lines of dialogue are, like most songs on recent Rolling Stones albums, inserted for no other reason than to serve as filler. The worst example being a scene involving Sandra Oh's neighbor character. The only purpose it serves is to deliver a little faux drama. That subplot is dropped faster than Britney Spears' baby, never to be heard from again.

Hard Candy refuses to send you prancing home with a smile on your face or a song in your heart, but if nothing else it serves as a strong warning that you should probably pay close attention to who your kids are communicating with online. At least warn them that sometimes the person they least suspect could be the one to be most wary of.

A quick word of warning to all you guys: there is one particular scene where what we perceive is happening will absolutely make you squirm in your seat. You'll most likely watch it through squinted eyes. I haven't felt that uncomfortable at the theater since the My Own Private Idaho fiasco. I suggest you be prepared.

Ultimately I felt as though I missed my movie night. The acting and casting are excellent, and the use of color and extreme close-ups are arresting. The first half is good cinema. It hooked me at the start, and by the time I realized it was going to be tedious yet grossly disturbing, it was too late in the evening to start a new movie so I watched to the end.

The film becomes less of a character study and more gruesome as it progresses and enters the less complex horror genre where nothing needs to makes real-world sense – and doesn't. The ending is simply lazy writing. I woke up this morning feeling disappointed that I watched it rather than a good movie.

That said, I see how someone else could appreciate the cinematic elements and acting as I did, and also find the plot and characters compelling. It's good enough / bad enough to be left to the individual viewer. I felt unsatisfied.
A 14 year old girl can manhandle and dominate a full grown man and make him cry? LOL. The fight in the tub where she overpowers him was just bad writing. Well, she WAS a psychopath so they are capable of superhuman things, I guess. Anyway, this movie implies that kidnapping and castration/mutilation is OK if you believe that a person MAY have committed a crime. Worst movie Ive seen in a long time.
Although this was an interesting movie there were several things wrong with it;

1) The girl was not convincing as a 14 year-old (even a mature 14 year-old). Her verbal ability and knowledge of subject matter was more like a 30 year-old graduate student than any teenager. Her character was not developed and we knew nothing about where she came from and her family (other than she had an older sister who drove her to meet him. Besides, why would an older sister leave her alone with a grown man she had never met before and let her get into a car with him?)

2) She is supposed to be the protagonist, but switches in mid-stream to antagonist

3) At first one gets the impression that she is an innocent sexual abuse survivor trying to get the guy busted, but soon you find out that she is an out-and-out psychopath who probably didn't suffer abuse but most likely had a pretty uneventful upbringing and probably was born with no conscience or empathy and that her targeting of him was more a crime of opportunity rather than because she suspected him of being a pedophile. She has the makings of a serial killer and uses the internet to find her victims using her young age as camouflage. Her lack of empathy makes it hard for the audience to view her as the innocent victim and protector of kids from pedophiles she originally portrayed herself to be.

4) The man is more believable as a well-rounded human being than she is although rather than to leave and go for help the few times he got himself free he chooses to enter into this power struggle with her and comes back in anger. This back and forth role reversal seems to be a big flaw in the movie's plot. It's hard to decide which is the predator and which is the prey.

5) There was a large amount of gratuitous torture and even though they didn't show it in graphic detail, that quickly overshadowed the plot and began to look like it became the main focus of the movie to draw one's attention away from the lack of character development of both characters.

6) The end is not believable; even if he does feel that his future is blown it does not seem in character for him to kill himself no matter how scared he is of people finding out his secret fantasies about various girls he photographed in his studio or the possibility of going to prison. It seems quite out of proportion given that the only photo we saw in his hidden stash was quite innocuous, and the ones on his wall, while they were somewhat suggestive were not out-and-out porn. By the end, his "sins" seemed to pale in comparison to hers. It seems that he would have called out to his ex-girlfriend rather than taking his own life simply because this stranger told him it was "the only way". I actually expected him to shove her over the edge of the roof or them to get into a wrestling match and both of them to fall off the roof and both die. Very little was logical about how things turned out.
Belongs in the 10 worst movies of all times list. Does ellen page ever play anything other than a worthless B. I mean she's our heroine and I want to see her dead by the end of it...just can't make her situation understandable or sympathetic...EVER.
These two did a superb job. Intense all the way through. How bizarre that it has you hating him for the perv that he is & then questioning whether or not he actually did the things she thinks he did or suspects him of. The movie makes valid points for those that like to justify their behaviors sometimes. You arent going to be hanging out with 14 yr old or on the internet chatting with one as an adult under any circumstances unless you are a child predator, period. This is vigilante justice in a way you've never experienced before. Its uncomfortable at times but, not really. I mean people seem to have no problem watching regular movie violence, women tied up & raped, tortured, etc. so I find the role reversal a refreshing change.
Psycho thrillers invariably have some unbelievable scenes in their plot - even Hitchcock's Psycho and Vertigo did, and they are considered classics. I thought the acting by Elliot Page who was probably 19 at the time was incredible and she kept me in the movie. Patrick Wilson did quite a good job too. Now -some serious flaws in the storyline. First, how could a girl get a man's body which was probably twice her own weight, which just fell flat on the floor up and into a sitting position in a chair where she could tie him too it? Also, after she had knocked him out a second time, how could she have gotten him up on a table, laid him flat on his back and again tied him up so that he could move neither legs nor arms. And even more unbelievable, she tased him and somehow got him into a standing position on a chair, such that when she removed the ropes lashing him to the beams above, he was left precariously balanced on a chair with a noose around his neck. Obviously, she did not castrate him by the way he was running around on the roof top, but that is never made clear to us except his lack of pain afterwards makes it obvious. Okies, but if we are going to watch movies in this genre, we are going to have to give a pass to some unbelievable things, or there couldn't be such movies. So we look at the characters, the acting, and the script to salvage the movie. And this one did, substantially due to the brilliant acting of Elliott Page and also to the script she was given. I thought the development of her character, from a precocious 14 year old curious about sex into a revenge seeking pedophile torturer was extraordinary. Although Patrick Wilson also did an excellent job at descending from the confident would be seducer of what he thought was a curious little temptress into begging for his life, it was really Page and her character that kept me glued to the movie. Was he going to escape, and what would he do to her when he did? And was he really a pedophile? The ending quite surprised me, and both questions were answered. I thought the script Page was given was very good, but her delivery of her lines, her body language, her facial expressions and her transformation from a cute, extraordinarily intelligent, sexually curious potential victim into a cold hearted executioner was more than brilliant - it essentially was the movie. Its too bad they could not have found a larger role for a talent like Sandra Oh, but bringing another substantial character into the contest of wits between the girl Hayley and the photographer Jeff would have totally spoiled it. I recommend watching it, and I may even watch it again.
Well, let me start by saying, this whole review is a spoiler, because I can't really discuss the movie without discussing what the majority of the viewing time will be, and that is revealed at around the 21-minute mark.

I find home-invasion/torture movies to be un pleasant and exhausting, and I likely wouldn't have finished this movie once I got to that portion if it hadn't been mentioned by a friend. They said this was a weird movie, and I happened to see the title in the movie list, and was like, oh, this is the one they're talking about.

So I watched on to give a book report and discuss the movie with them. Well, it's pretty much torture porn. The style of this one, I presume, is get on board with hate of pedophiles, then enjoy the punishment of one. That is the majority of the run-time. If you're into it, this might be just the thing.

Personally, I get wore out by extended sequences like this, and lose interest, and for the next hour after the reveal of the movie's theme, that's pretty much all there is to see. To add insult to injury, the co-star is Ellen Page, and in a cliche matching of my expectations from Juno, plays a teen who spouts contrived dialogue from an adult writer that in no way matches anything resembling a teen's perspective or life experiences.

I cannot take anymore obnoxious precociousness in Ellen Page movies. The friend who mentioned it is really cool, and I wouldn't have suffered this for a lot of people, except to discuss this movie with them later.

On a side note, a lot of reviewers seemed not to pay attention to the details to understand that the man confessed to being involved in the murder of a teen and it seems he, and his co-murderer blamed the other when confronted by this vigilante, and probably got their just comeuppance.

None of that story has much to do with how I feel about this movie though. More Ellen Page precociousness and an hour of grueling close-up torture screaming is why I hate this movie. I have better things to do than to sit through all of that. Good cinematography though if you're into nothing but close-ups. I am not.

Boo. Here's my rotten tomato.
This movie is everything I expected it to be, and then some! Twists and turns in this tormenting psychological drama about a closet pervert who seeks to establish relationships with underage girls over the internet. He soon finds, after meeting one fourteen year old, that she is more than his match. I found this to be an extremely interesting film, with much in the way of thought provoking topics. I rate this movie as being good and a real asset to the independent film producers and writers. I advise seeing this, as it does give the viewer many things to consider concerning the world of pedophile behavior and those he victimizes. A well written with a well thought out story line. patrick wilson was the stand out actor in this movie due to the excellent acting and well timed delivery of the lines. Highly recommended!
