It’s normal for kids to seek more privacy and independence as they get older, but people online are worried that one girl’s Reddit post is more than just a question of getting more "me time." In fact, after the teen shared that her father routinely walks in on her in the shower, many people felt that this wasn’t an invasion of privacy but was actually an alarming case of peeping.
Her dad doesn’t respect her privacy, she explained in the post.
“He usually doesn't knock,” she wrote.
That is weird in and of itself, but what’s weirder is that he does it even though their shower has a transparent glass door.
“No shower curtain so he sees me naked,” she explained.
He continues to do it even though she’s already explained to him that it makes her uncomfortable when he sees her naked. As she writes:
“He has four go to reasons to justify it:
She does lock the bathroom door while she’s showering now, but “he called me a prude for not letting him in today while I was showering. He was annoyed when I didn't let him in the shower.”
So she asked for the input of strangers: "Am I the a--hole for wanting privacy from my dad and locking the door?"
"[Not the A--hole]. Also, gross. I’m sorry to tell you this, but your dad is a pervert," one person commented. "If he wasn’t a pervert, he wouldn’t have been so annoyed to be locked out."
Another commenter agreed. "It's really disturbing that he called you a prude and to me is very telling. It's not about just needing the bathroom or it's not something he hasn't seen before, he's trying to shame you for being modest. That's really creepy."
A third commenter put it this way: "He's effectively gaslighting her into thinking SHE is being unreasonable for not letting HIM see HER naked. Gross!"
AS if all of the shower talk wasn’t enough of a red flag, the teen later wrote that her dad “has commented on my chest a few times in the past.”
It goes without saying that there is no reason why a parent should pressure a child to have access to the bathroom while the child is showering — or while changing. This girl needs to tell her mother or another trusted adult about what’s happening.
She might even want to speak to a representative from the National Sexual Assault Telephone Hotline, which accepts calls 24/7, toll free and can be reached at 800-656-HOPE (4673), and hopefully get some help.
