Generally, employees take the next available workday off when a stat holiday falls on a weekend (a non-working day like Saturday or Sunday). Also, take note that the employees must not have been absent without consent on the last scheduled working day before the holiday or the first scheduled day after (this is known as the “last and first” rule) and must not have refused to work on the statutory holiday when requested or scheduled to. When an employee scheduled to work on a Stat holiday does not show up for work without a good reason, such as religious observance, the employee has no right to public holiday pay.
