Five times Keigo saw Touya first and the one time Touya saw Keigo first.
It was inevitable that I would title something in the Retail AU with this. Also I really wanted to do something through Hawks' POV.
This was written before Dabi's height got released so he's still 6'2" in this AU. Retail AU Dabi is just a tall twink man, and Hawks is gonna yeet him.
(See the end of the work for more notes .)
Keigo first sees him on a Friday. It’s two in the afternoon, in July, and Keigo’s thinking about how he gets off work in two hours and can go home and take a nap at the pool in his apartment complex. He’s been using that pool a lot this summer, because it’s been hot and he’s been desperate for human contact but not sure how to make friends.
Rumi’s a great friend and roommate, but their schedules never match up now that she works night shifts at the gym, so their usual nightly movie nights have been turned down to weekly movie nights.
He’s walking through the section, making sure that the new hire, a firey high school senior named Katsuki, isn’t swearing at customers again, when he notices him. Keigo has many secrets, but one that people never guess is that he had a fairly lengthy emo phase when he was a teenager. He had MySpace, printed out pictures of Andy Biersack, and cried a little whenever Gerard and Frank made out on stage because he wanted to be the one making out with Frank Iero.
The man is tall, with long thin legs wrapped up in dusty black jeans and a slightly too small baseball tee. His hair is a mess, black strands going everywhere and his bangs covering his face. He’s beautiful, like a 2007 scene kid’s wet dream come to life.
He walks fast. His boots stomp against the floor of the Nordstrom and the sound cuts through any thoughts Keigo could have.
Keigo swallows thickly as the tall man disappears into the mall. He has no idea if he’ll ever see him again, but he wants to. He wants to get a proper look at the face behind that tired and angry scowl.
The second time Keigo sees him is while he’s on break. They’re both in the food court, Keigo in line for the new Chinese place that just opened up (he knows its shit, but he’s also really fucking hungry and wants fried rice and orange chicken. Let him live.), and the hot guy is in line for Chipotle.
He’s on his phone this time, with earbuds in and tapping away. He’s hunched over, too, with the posture of someone who takes the train and buries his head in his phone so that the crackheads don’t talk to him. He’s not wearing a jacket now, and Keigo can see that his arms are covered in tattoos, all the way down to his fingers.
It’s a lot hotter in the food court suddenly, and Keigo quickly looks away before the hot emo guy can feel Keigo’s gaze on his back.
When he turns around again, almost at the front of the line, the guy has a burrito bowl in his hand and is moving through the crowds to sit at a half cleared off table in the middle of all of the chaos. His earbuds are still in.
Keigo pays for his food and searches for a place to sit. Technically, he could sit across from the hot guy, since he’s alone and at a table for four, but Keigo doesn’t want to insert himself too quickly. He still doesn’t know where the guy works. It’s too early.
He finds a booth and slides in, snapping his chopsticks in half and digging in. He can still see the guy, halfway across the food court and manspreading so that his long legs stick out from the other side of the table.
Keigo raises an eyebrow. He could get between those legs.
He takes another bite of chicken. Now is not the time to be horny for a stranger.
It’s the peak of summer, and everyone is sweating. Keigo, who loves the heat, is almost ready to throw in the towel and accept that maybe there’s such a thing as
too hot
. It’s also the weekend, and everyone’s out from school and ready to waste their Saturday wandering around in an air conditioned mall.
Keigo has decided that he doesn’t ever want children. He’s seen enough of them working at Nordstrom, as they trail in after their parents and pull clothes down and wreck everything. It’s… it’s ruining his faith in humanity, and he’s not even in the mall yet.
Keigo drives to work. Technically, he could bike if he wanted, because his apartment is about ten minutes away, but he prefers driving. At least in his car he can control the temperature and the music.
The only issue is that, because of the heat and because its a Saturday, everyone is at the mall and Keigo can’t park where he usually does. He has to go all the way into the parking deck, and ends up almost at the exit near the train station. And then, on top of that, when he finally parks and opens his door, he gets hit with a wave of humidity that nearly chokes him. He’s never been so overheated in his life.
There, trudging up the sidewalk that leads from the train station to the mall, is the hot emo guy.
Keigo makes a decision. He doesn’t have to get to work for another fifteen minutes. He can run through the store and find out where this fucker works, and still get back in time to clock in on time.
He jumps up from where he’d been leaning on his car and goes after the guy. He’s careful to keep some distance between the two of them, because while he understands that he’s being a little creepy, he’s trying to keep the stalker symptoms to a minimum.
The man has very long legs. He’s also still wearing tattered black skinny jeans that hug his thighs and his calves and don’t leave much to the imagination. He has no ass, as Keigo finds out by following him through Nordstrom and out into the mall. His shirt pulls up a little at the back and Keigo can see that there’s more ink under there, but he has no idea what it could be and his stupid gay brain immediately jumps to a tramp stamp.
The longer Keigo’s behind him, the more he wants to know where the hell this man works.
They leave the Nordstrom and head out towards the actual mall. They go past the hair place, past the Pandora where Rumi used to work, and past the little French pastry stand.
The hot emo guy drifts into the Hot Topic and is immediately jumped by a tiny blonde girl with space buns. Keigo keeps going, down far enough where he can turn around without being obvious.
He shouldn’t be as surprised as he is that the hot emo dude works at Hot Topic. Where the hell
else
would someone like that work?
Keigo has a place now. Every time he wanders out of Nordstrom to grab food or to actually go shopping for once in his life, he walks by the Hot Topic and debates actually going inside.
Keigo’s never been in a Hot Topic. He’s always felt that he would stick out like a sore thumb in there, with his salon bleached and styled hair and his preppy clothes. He knows he doesn’t look like the expected Hot Topic customer, even with the eyeliner he sports sometimes. He knows what he looks like, and he’s seen some of the other employees at that particular Hot Topic and they all look like the edgy kids Keigo always wanted to be in high school.
So he keeps his distance. He looks inside whenever he passes by, hoping to catch a glimpse of the hot emo guy while he’s at work, but he never does.
And then suddenly it’s September and the mall calms down for a bit. It’s not permanent, and Keigo can already feel the threat of holiday shopping in the air, but at least there aren’t kids running around any more. At least it’s calm between Monday and Friday and Keigo can relax and catch up on gossip with Yu and the part time kids.
The angry kid is still there, and his name is Katsuki and he’s incredibly competitive. He’s managed to make plan for Keigo every day he shows up to work, and Keigo may or may not be fucking with the schedule so that he can work with the kid.
Keigo is not a money driven person. He never has been, even though he doesn’t come from money. It’s… as long as he has enough for rent and food, he’s fine. He’d much rather talk with customers and his co-workers than pressure people into buying more than they want.
So he lets Katsuki do that and at the end of the day when they’re both running around to recover the men’s section, Keigo sees him again.
He’s not alone this time. He’s with a woman about the same age, and it’s almost nine so really the store should be closing, but Keigo can’t bring himself to kick the hot emo guy or his friend out. Not yet. He wants to know who they are.
“Yo, Keigo, I’m gonna tell those two to fuck off,” Katsuki says. At least he’s giving Keigo a warning now.
“Nah, it’s fine,” Keigo says. “I’m pretty sure the guy works in the mall. They’ll be out of here soon.”
And he’s not wrong. The woman grabs a plaid shirt, she and the guy argue over it for a bit, and he finally rolls his eyes and hangs back while she comes up to the register with the shirt and two sweaters over her arm.
She’s smiling. “Hey, sorry, I know you guys are about to close…”
Keigo waves her off. “Don’t worry about it. You find everything?”
“Yeah,” she says. She motions over her shoulder at the emo guy. “My brother’s always a pain in the butt whenever I try to buy him stuff, but I know he doesn’t have enough cold weather clothes, and I was already here to get stuff for my other brothers.”
Keigo takes the sweaters and the button down. “How many brothers do you have?”
“Three,” she says. “Touya and I are the oldest. We’re twins.”
“Oh?” He raises an eyebrow. So this woman is hot emo guy’s sister. And his name is Touya, apparently. Good information to have.
He looks past the woman, to where Touya is still standing. He’s on his phone now and ignoring the two of them. Keigo looks back at the woman. “I’m guessing he’s not much for shopping?”
She shakes her head. “No, not in the slightest. I think working in a mall ruined the whole experience for him.”
Keigo snorts. “Alright, I can understand that.”
He rings her up, and smiles at her as she takes the bag from him. “You two have a good night. And good luck with your brother.”
There’s no pattern as to when Touya works. Then again, Keigo doesn’t really have a pattern himself. He just comes in when he’s needed, and leaves when his shift is over so that he can go home and sleep.
There’s also no pattern as to whether Touya comes in through Nordstrom or not, or goes to the food court. Keigo’s been trying to figure it out, but he hasn’t had much luck.
“I’m taking my thirty,” he says to no one in particular, as Katsuki is off on the other side of the department and the first seasonal hire hasn’t shown up yet today. Keigo clocks himself out, grabs his phone from behind the register, and heads out.
Impulsively, he turns on his heel and walks through the doors of the Hot Topic.
“Hey, welcome to Hell, what’s up,” the man behind the counter says. It’s not Touya. It’s the pale haired dude who used to work at GameStop a few years ago. Keigo remembers him, but not his name. Keigo had worked at Hollister before moving over to Nordstrom, and the Hollister had been above and across from GameStop. He’d seen that guy working there, and he’d also seen the guy spraying down the whole store with a can of Febreeze multiple times.
Keigo had never understood that. This guy looks like he’s homeless, and yet he Febreezes his store? Keigo doesn’t get it, but he’s in Hot Topic now and he can’t see Touya anywhere, so he’ll have to figure something out.
He smiles at the guy. “Hey. You used to work at GameStop?”
The guy rolls his eyes. “Don’t remind me of that dark time. You looking for anything in particular?”
“You guys do body jewelery, right?” Keigo asks. He’s been thinking about getting his belly button pierced. This is a good motivator. “Or is that just Spencer’s?”
“Yeah, it’s over there,” the man points towards a stand of body jewelry and gauges.
Keigo flashes him a peace sign and walks over.
He’s still looking, still trying to decide if he should get the piercing first or if it’s not a stupid idea to have a belly button ring and nowhere to put it when Touya himself steps through the door.
“You’re still here?” Touya asks. His voice is very, very deep and gravelly.
“You’re late, dumbass,” the other guy says. Keigo can hear the eyeroll. “Of course I’m still here. I barely trust you with the store, let alone
no one
being in charge.”
“Ha ha, go fuck yourself,” Touya says. He walks past the cash registers and slides into the backroom.
Keigo chokes on his own spit and lets himself out. Break time is over. He’s apparently too much of a coward to actually talk to Touya.
It’s fine. Keigo will live. He doesn’t have to actually act on this crush. He can just observe from afar and think about hot emo guys when he gets home from work. It’s fine.
Keigo’s favourite person in the entire mall is a high schooler named Fumikage who works at the eBar outside his store. Fumikage is great for many reasons, one of which being his weird thing for crows and ravens, and his insistance that his bathroom at home is haunted by Edgar Allen Poe. Keigo doesn’t know if he believes in ghosts, but he hopes they’re real just for Fumikage’s sake.
The other reason is that Fumikage doesn’t gag whenever Keigo orders coffee. Keigo can’t help that he has a sweet tooth, or that straight coffee tastes like ass. He knows what ass tastes like, and he’s rather eat ass than drink black coffee. So he
will
put extra flavour and sugar in it on top of whole milk, and he will ask for whipped cream no matter what he gets.
He’s on a fifteen, leaning against the counter while Fumikage makes him a drink. It’s the honey almond latte, a classic, and Keigo’s decided to spice it up with some caramel drizzle added to it.
“Dude Karen,” a familiar deep voice says.
He’s actually talked to Touya now, and found out that Touya’s the manager at the Hot Topic and has absolutely no people skills. It’s kind of hot. (It’s really hot, actually. Keigo doesn’t understand himself).
He grins. “So that’s what you guys are calling me? I guess the haircut really isn’t doing me any favours, huh?”
He reaches up and ruffles the back of his hair. His hairdresser fucked up last time, but Keigo was too nice to tell her, so now he’s stuck looking like he wants to talk to the manager until his hair grows out enough that he can get away with asking for a new haircut. He’ll make it work. It sucks that the first time Touya ever noticed him was while he had stupid hair.
Touya swallows and turns away, to Fumikage. “Biggest size you have, iced latte. And almond milk instead of regular.”
Keigo frowns. “You put almond milk in your coffee? Doesn’t that make it taste worse?”
Touya glances over his shoulder. His eyes are heavily lidded, with messy eyeliner that brings out the blue of his irises. “I like it bitter. What did you even get?”
The machine dings, and Fumikage moves over to announce Keigo’s order before handing it over.
Touya gags. “That sounds… disgusting.”
Keigo takes a sip from his drink, purposely sucking more than he needs to. He winks. “Maybe I like it sweet.”
