Orphan Amy is companion to the 11th Doctor, as played by Matt Smith. She is just nine when she first encounters the Raggedy Doctor, who reappears 12 years later and whisks the 19-year-old Kissogram girl off to the moon in his TARDIS. Scottish Amy is the current Doctor Who companion. 
Billy Piper was already well-known as a former pop starlet and wife of celebrity DJ Chris Evans before she landed the part of Rose Tyler in 2004. Rose was companion to the ninth and 10th Doctors, as played by Christopher Ecclestone and David Tennant. She first appeared on our screens in 2005 as the working class shop assistant Rose.
Australian songstress Kylie took a starring one-off role in the 2007 Christmas episode of Doctor Who. She played Astrid, a waitress on the starship Titanic who eventually sacrificed hereself to save David Tennant's Doctor. (Interestingly, Astrid is an anagram of TARDIS and Peth is Welsh for part).
Michelle Ryan - Lady Christina de Souza
Former EastEnders actress and Bionic Woman Michelle, was a high-profile actress before landing the part of one-off companion Lady Christina. As a short-lived companion to David Tennant's Doctor she played a young aristocratic burglar in 2009. She filmed her episodes in Cardiff and Dubai.
As mum to one of Doctor Who's most famous modern-day companions, single mum Jackie Tyler carved out an important role for herself in the franchise, appearing in many episodes from 2005 to 2006. Her daughter Rose, played by Billy Piper, was companion to two doctors, played by Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant. Londoner Jackie lived in a council estate flat.
Actress Tracy-Ann is best-known for her role as Chrissie Watts in British soap EastEnders, but appeared in Doctor Who in 2006 as the director of Torchwood One. The London-based branch of the Torchwood Institute threw up many obstacles for David Tennant's Doctor Who. Yvonne was eventually cyber-converted by the ruthless Cybermen.
One of Britain's best-known actresses, Lindsay played Adelaide in the autumn 2009 special, The Waters of Mars. Captain Adelaide is commander of a human colony on Mars called Bowie Base One and is described as one of the Doctor's cleverest and most strong-minded companions. She was companion to David Tennant's Doctor Who.
Established actress Alex found fame in American medical drama ER before returning to Britain to star as Time Traveller River Song. River Song is acknowledged as a pivotal character, central to Doctor Who's life. She first appeared in 2008 when The Doctor was played by David Tennant and has reappeared with Matt Smith as the 11th Doctor Who.
Sophie as Liz 10 appears as a masked woman aboard the Starship UK. She is revealed to be Queen Elizabeth the Tenth and enlists The Doctor's help to unravel the secrets of the starship. Actress Sophie appeared as Liz in April 2010 with David Tennant as The Doctor. Among her acting accolades was her Oscar nominated performance in the 2004 film Hotel Rwanda.
As the 'daughter' of the David Tennant incarnation of The Doctor, Jenny appeared on our sceens in 2008. Georgia is the real-life daughter of the fifth doctor, played by Peter Davison. Her mother is actress Sandra Dickinson.
