Nov. 30—PERU — High school students will help the community get into the Christmas spirit with a performance apropos for the season. Friday is opening night for A Christmas Story, performed by Peru High Schools theater department. The classic story of Ralphie and the coveted Red Ryder BB gun features Aiden Tyson as the lead. Hes the typical 9-year-old, Tyson said. Hes obsessed with the BB gun, and hed do anything to get it. Tysons path to a lead role — this is his first ever show — is thanks to some of the cast members who more or less plucked him out of the hallway. I was told I should audition, the freshman said. Ive been wanting to try theater. Director Mike Putt said Tyson was a shoo-in for the lead. In seconds I could see the Ralphie, he said. A youthful face certainly helped. Tyson said being the youngest sibling has helped in preparing for the role. I enjoying playing the character, but I think in real life, Id find him annoying, he said. Honestly same, added Olivia Stone. No version of A Christmas Story is complete without some neighborhood bullies. Enter Stone as Scut Farkus. Its a role that brings out a totally different side of the senior. Im an evil weird, snively bully, Stone said. Its kind of fun. Its completely opposite of my actual personality. Xen Kelly is older Ralphie, the narrator. The whole idea is Im telling a story of who I am, he said. Its an old man looking back on his life. Audience members should feel right at home if theyve seen the movie. Quite a few scenes are almost word for word, Putt said. Cast members and crew were still working on putting the whole performance together Monday. Were almost there, but were not at the top yet, Kelly said. Stone said its been a bit stressful in the lead up to opening night. This is the second show headed up by Putt, the new theater director at Peru High School. Naturally, he was looking for a Christmas show as the calendar turns to December. Its one of my favorites, as far as Christmas themes go, Putt said. Its a fun show about a kid that has one desire in life. (The students) really know how to take you back to your childhood Christmases. Putt is tasked with rebuilding the programs numbers and the relation between it and the community. So far, there seems to be community interest in the high schools theater performances. Crab Cakes and Murder, which was performed over the summer, sold more tickets than any show in the past 10 years at Peru High School. The interest for the show is high, Putt said. People ask about it. We didnt have that for the summer show. The interest is there. Coming this spring to Peru High School: Little Shop of Horrors.
