Calvin legte viel mehr Wert auf die Organisation seiner Kirche als die deutschen Reformatoren. Tatsache ist, dass die calvinistische Kirche nach dem Plan ihres Schöpfers an zwei Fronten gleichzeitig kämpfen sollte: gegen die „Papsten“ und gegen die „Philosophen“, d.h. säkulare Denker, gleichgültig gegenüber Glaubensfragen und bereit, jede Religion zu akzeptieren, sogar heidnische. „Philosophen“ Calvin betrachtete noch gefährlichere Feinde als die Katholiken und bekämpfte sie buchstäblich bis zum Tod: 1553 wurde in Genf auf Drängen Calvins der spanische Wissenschaftler Miguel Ser-vet, der es wagte, Calvins Ansichten zu kritisieren, verbrannt Einatz. Die Calvinisten hatten nicht eine solche Leiter der kirchlichen Ränge und Positionen wie die Katholiken - im Gegenteil, jede calvinistische Gemeinde, die aus mehreren Dutzend Personen bestand, entschied alle ihre Angelegenheiten unabhängig. Ebenso flexibel waren die politischen Ansichten Calvins. Er bestätigte. Schließlich bewirkte Calvin bedeutende Veränderungen in den theologischen Ansichten der deutschen Reformatoren. All diese Tugenden des Calvinismus trugen zu seiner weiten Verbreitung in Europa bei. Calvinisten waren niederländische Patrioten, die für die Befreiung ihres Heimatlandes von der spanischen Herrschaft kämpften; Den gleichen Glauben bekennen sich die französischen „Hugenotten“, die seit langem Pläne hegen, sich von der französischen Krone zu lösen und in Südfrankreich einen unabhängigen calvinistischen Staat zu gründen.
