Veteran Defenseman Calvin de Haan Signs One-Year Deal with Tampa Bay Lightning

Tampa, FL – July 2, 2024 – The Tampa Bay Lightning have bolstered their blue line by signing veteran defenseman Calvin de Haan to a one-year contract worth $1.2 million, the team announced Tuesday.

The 33-year-old de Haan brings over a decade of NHL experience to a Lightning squad looking to solidify its defensive depth after a hard-fought playoff run. Known for his steady defensive play and shot-blocking ability, de Haan has previously played for the New York Islanders, Carolina Hurricanes, Chicago Blackhawks, and most recently, the Seattle Kraken.

'Calvin is a reliable, smart defenseman who can play tough minutes and contribute on the penalty kill,' said Lightning General Manager Julien BriseBois. 'His experience and leadership will be valuable as we push for another deep playoff run.'

Originally drafted 12th overall by the Islanders in 2009, de Haan has logged 571 career NHL games, recording 25 goals and 123 assists while averaging over 18 minutes of ice time per game. His defensive awareness and physical play make him a strong addition to Tampa’s back end.

De Haan expressed excitement about joining a contender, stating, 'Tampa has a winning culture, and I’m ready to do whatever it takes to help this team compete for another Stanley Cup.'

The Lightning open their 2024-25 season on October 10 against the Florida Panthers.
