Call of Duty 2021 will reportedly run on Modern Warfare’s engine
Modern Warfare’s new engine could see a return earlier than expected.
A new report from website VGC provides some fresh info on the 2021 Call of Duty game, which is rumored to be called Vanguard.
Per the new article from VGC, the 2021 Call of Duty title is set to run on the new Modern Warfare engine introduced in 2019.
Modern Warfare’s ‘IW8’ 2019 engine was a massive revamp of the Call of Duty engine. The engine was in development by Infinity Ward’s Poland studio for almost 5 years before seeing the day of light in 2019 with the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.
The 2021 Call of Duty game, which is being developed by Sledgehammer Games, is set to return to the Modern Warfare engine.
This might be a welcome change for players who enjoyed the improvements and performance the new engine brought. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War stayed on Treyarch’s own engine, which is quite different in many ways to the Modern Warfare engine.
Activision announced the IW8 engine back in May 2019, and described it in-depth both to press and fans in multiple showcases.
The features described for the ‘IW8’ engine were:
The new technology utilizes the latest advancements in visual engineering, including a physically-based material system allowing for state of the art photogrammetry, a new hybrid tile based streaming system, new PBR decal rendering system, world volumetric lighting, 4K HDR, DirectX Raytracing (PC) and more as well as a new GPU geometry pipeline.
Spectral rendering delivers thermal heat radiation and infrared identification for both thermal and night-vision in-game imaging. The technical investment provides a cutting edge animation and blend shape system, while the new suite of audio tools supports full Dolby ATMOS, on supported platforms, along with the latest in audio simulation effects.
The 2021 Call of Duty title is set to return to WWII era for the franchise, with the name of the game reportedly being ‘Vanguard.’
As always, stay tuned for the latest news on Call of Duty 2021.
Here’s everything we currently know about Call of Duty: Vanguard, including the release date, time period, and Warzone integration.
Call of Duty: Vanguard is on the horizon, and here’s everything we know about the upcoming game’s release date, who’s developing it, leaks, and more.
As always, a new year means a new Call of Duty game. The upcoming Call of Duty 2021 release is as mysterious as it is exciting, and we’re sure to get another year of Warzone updates combined with a brand new (or returning) setting for the franchise.
As time has passed, more information has begun to rise to the surface regarding the 2021 title called Call of Duty: Vanguard, its setting, and its possible integration with Warzone.
With the resounding success of Modern Warfare, Warzone, and Black Ops Cold War, the 2021 iteration of Call of Duty is sure to be a huge release. Cold War has now completely integrated with Warzone, bringing the game to the 1980s, and with 2021’s game set to integrate too, the game’s setting has never been more important.
Here’s everything we know about the 2021 game Call of Duty: Vanguard.
There is a rumor from ModernWarzone that the working title for the 2021 Call of Duty is ‘ Vanguard.’ This title adds credibility to the potential of this being a World War game, as Vanguard is the foremost part of an advancing army or naval force.
While ModernWarzone believes this title may be changed in the future, Eurogamer “understands Activision’s current plan is to stick with the Vanguard subtitle for the final version.”
There has been no official word from Activision yet, and plans could certainly change in the future.
A new report by Video Games Chronicle on June 9, 2021, has also reported that this year’s game will be called Call of Duty: Vanguard.
One rumor suggests that the 2021 game will be set during the World War II era again, and Eurogamer reported that this will be true.
ModernWarzone claimed that CoD: Vanguard would be an alternate history version of WWII set in the 1950s. However, Eurogamer’s sources disputed this information, saying it would be a “traditional WW2 setting.”
We should get more teasers for the game in the coming months. Leaks, as always, will be tough to decipher, with plenty of community members posting fake leaks for each new CoD game.
A June 9, 2021 report by Video Games Chronicle stated that the setting for Call of Duty: Vanguard will be in both the Pacific and European Theaters of World War II. The reported plot will focus on the birth of modern allied special forces and will feature Campaign, Zombies, and Multiplayer modes.
In Activision’s Q4 earnings call, they confirmed that a new Call of Duty game would be releasing in 2021, with Sledgehammer Games in charge of development.
Sledgehammer released Call of Duty: WWII in 2017 but faced difficulties after their co-founders and many team members left. However, Sledgehammer hired over 150 new people to the studio in 2020 and recently opened a new studio in Toronto.
Activision said that “Development is being led by Sledgehammer Games, and the game is looking great and on track for its fall release.”
Call of Duty games traditionally release in November. However, Modern Warfare and Black Ops 4 were both released in October. Ideally, Call of Duty targets the first Friday of every November, as we saw for CoD WW2 and Infinite Warfare releases.
The Friday tradition started with Black Ops 3, where games before saw releases on the first Tuesday of November. Below you can read some of the recent Call of Duty releases.
We could expect this year’s Call of Duty game to release on either the first or second Friday of November 2021. That gives us a possible date of either the 5th or 12th of November.
There is still no confirmation on when Vanguard will be officially revealed, however by looking at Black Ops Cold War’s announcement, we can hazard a guess. For the first time in Call of Duty history, the next game was revealed in an in-game live event.
All signs point towards Vanguard being revealed inside Warzone, with a recent leak suggesting the Vanguard will be revealed during Season 4. On June 9, 2021, Video Games Chronicle also reported on the idea that Call of Duty: Vanguard will be revealed through an in-game event in Warzone and that it will have a November release date.
Activision’s president confirmed in a recent interview that their games could be released “later in the year” than before, and VGC also said that Call of Duty will be skipping E3.
With this information and Cold War’s reveal last year, it’s likely that Call of Duty: Vanguard will be revealed in July or August 2021.
One of the biggest talking points when discussing Black Ops Cold War and Warzone is the engine. Infinity Ward brought an entirely new, more realistic-feeling engine with Modern Warfare and Warzone, while Cold War used an updated version of the Black Ops 3 engine with a more classic CoD feel.
With players often switching between Cold War and Warzone, the engine shift can feel jarring, so fans are keen to find out which engine CoD: Vanguard will run on.
A report by VGC claims that 2021’s Call of Duty will be on Modern Warfare’s engine. This means the game will likely have the same feel as MW and Warzone and will run similarly, boasting the same improvements to realism and performance.
Activision has also said that “the game is “being built” for next-generation consoles & PC,” but there’s no confirmation if the game will also release for the Xbox One and PS4.
However, VGC reported on June 9, 2021, that Call of Duty: Vanguard is being developed for current and last generation consoles and PC.
Black Ops Cold War integrated with Warzone at its first season, bringing across Operators, weapons, and even Zombies.
Activision has stated that they intend to keep Warzone at the ‘front and center’ of Call of Duty for a long time. In the Q4 investor call, Activision confirmed that CoD 2021 is “designed to both integrate with and enhance the existing COD ecosystem.”
While the game will most likely share weapons and progression, it’s uncertain if the integration will go any deeper. WW2 is a vastly different setting from Cold War, especially Modern Warfare, so developers will face challenges in fully integrating these time periods.
And as for a new map, VGC’s sources also say that this will be “uncertain” because of “scheduling issues and shift in setting.” There could be a potential revamp in the first half of 2022, similar to Verdansk ’84, or perhaps there won’t be a new map until after CoD 2022 releases.
However, a June 9, 2021 report by VGC states that the integration between Warzone and Call of Duty: Vanguard will be very extensive thanks to Sledgehammer Games having more time to prepare for it. This integration will see Warzone transition to a World War II setting following its transition to the 1980s in Season 3 of Black Ops Cold War.
This setting transition will see a new Pacific Theater World War II Warzone map be the main focus, as it will reportedly be the largest map the Call of Duty battle royale has ever seen. This new Warzone map will also reportedly feature new vehicles for players to use.
We’ll be sure to update this post with any new information, as it becomes available.
A new Battlefield game will also be released late in 2021, and the game has now been officially revealed, so you can check out everything we know about Battlefield 2042 and its multiplayer maps, modes, and Specialists.
Here’s everything we know about Call of Duty: Vanguard’s official reveal which is expected to happen inside Warzone.
The next CoD game is widely believed to be revealed in a Warzone live event, so here’s everything we know about Call of Duty: Vanguard’s official reveal.
With Sledgehammer Games at the helm again, CoD is set to return to its Second World War roots with Call of Duty: Vanguard. While concrete details on the game are sparse, a recent report claimed that Vanguard would release with a brand-new WWII-themed Warzone map.
Call of Duty games have usually been revealed by June, but with gaming’s evolving landscape, this hasn’t been the case for Vanguard. It’s understood that Vanguard will be revealed inside a Warzone live event, similar to Cold War.
Here’s when and how we expect Call of Duty: Vanguard to be revealed.
Call of Duty games are typically announced in April or May. Still, following Warzone’s success and everything that Activision can do with the battle royale phenomenon, they have confirmed that premium CoD games will be revealed later in the year.
Black Ops Cold War was the first to deviate from the standard reveal cycle, with the game being officially revealed in August 2020 inside of Warzone. When asked in an interview with VentureBeat in April if Call of Duty games will be revealed later, Activision President Rob Kostich said, “we’re probably shifting a bit more in that direction.” He added that premium CoD title reveals “might be happening later, but it’s all part of a broader agenda to bring the community along on a fun journey.”
A new report from VGC claims that Call of Duty will skip this year’s E3 and CoD 2021, all-but-confirmed to be called ‘Vanguard,’ will be revealed later in the year. Following from Black Ops Cold War’s example, the most likely date for Call of Duty: Vanguard’s reveal is July or August 2021.
Black Ops Cold War was revealed inside Warzone, and following its success, Activision appears to be keen on doing the same for Vanguard.
In Kostich’s interview with VentureBeat, he said: “We did some cool things in terms of integrating the reveal of Black Ops into Warzone. Those are the things we want to orchestrate and provide to our community, letting them discover Call of Duty themselves in their play experience.”
He also confirmed that “marketing is changing within Call of Duty, how we get the community to participate and uncover things for us.”
All signs point towards another reveal inside Warzone, with a leak claiming that the game will be announced in a Season 4 live event, and VGC has now reported that Activision is likely to reveal Vanguard in the battle royale.
For the Cold War reveal, players were tasked with finding Woods in Verdansk before quickly making their way to Stadium to see the reveal trailer. We imagine that Vanguard will be revealed similarly, but perhaps Activision will be able to do more with the live event concept this time around.

Call of Duty: Vanguard will include a new Warzone map that is set during the Pacific theater of WWII, including new vehicles and a larger map.
Call of Duty 2021, which is set to be called Call of Duty: Vanguard, will feature a brand new Warzone experience that takes place during the Pacific theater of World War II.
The report comes from VGC News, who says that Activision plans to skip E3 2021 for any Call of Duty 2021 news and will rather reveal the game within Call of Duty: Warzone in the months ahead.
VGC’s article also mentions that Sledgehammer Games is going to be better prepared for Warzone, with Warzone getting a “massive WWII” revamp that will include the game’s “largest new map” yet.
“The plans include an entirely new Warzone map – the series’ largest and most ambitious to date – this time planned to coincide with the release of the game rather than arriving months later.
The Vanguard map is said to be set in the Pacific theatre of World War II and is significantly larger than Warzone’s current Verdansk environment.“
The new map will feature Pacific-themed vehicles as part of its experience. And, as previously reported, Call of Duty: Vanguard will run on Modern Warfare’s engine.
VGC’s report also states that Call of Duty: Vanguard will release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PS4 and Xbox One consoles. The title will continue to support cross play and cross progression across all modes.
Call of Duty: Vanguard is expected to feature a new Campaign mode set in World War II, a new MP experience, and a Zombies Co-Op mode.
Activision declined to comment on these rumors to VGC. The company usually never comments on such rumors and speculation.
VGC did not have a pinpoint date for when the 2021 Call of Duty game will be revealed. Activision has planned for titles to be revealed later in the year than usual thanks to Warzone’s success.
Activision has only confirmed thus far that Sledgehammer Games is leading the development of Call of Duty 2021, and stated that the game is “built for next-gen” with campaign, MP, and Zombies modes.

Call of Duty 2021 could be making use of Infinity Ward's IW8 engine
Call of Duty 2021 will make a return to the game engine used by Modern Warfare and Warzone, according to a new report.
This comes from VGC, who begin by verifying the claim made by another outlet earlier this week that Call of Duty: 2021 would return to World War Two. The article claims that the unannounced game will use the 'IW8' engine that powers both Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Call of Duty: Warzone.
This marks a change from 2020's Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, as Treyarch's game used an updated version of the engine previously used for Black Ops 4. It would appear that developer Sledgehammer is opting to go with Infinity Ward's engine for their upcoming Call of Duty game. According to these sources then, Call of Duty 2021 will be returning to an established game engine for a very established setting at some point later this year, although Activision is yet to confirm any details.
The reports about Call of Duty 2021 started circulating last week, when ModernWarzone, a prominent COD leaker, claimed that the game's name was Call of Duty: Vanguard and would take place in an alternate reality, where World War Two extended into the 1950's. Eurogamer then claimed that this was inaccurate, as Call of Duty 2021 would have a traditional World War Two setting.
Whatever the case may be, we'll have to wait a fair few months yet to find out for sure. Keeping in mind that 2020's Black Ops Cold War wasn't unveiled until August with a November release date, we could be in for a little bit of an extended wait to find out about this year's launch for sure.
