On March 18th, 1965, the accident that inspired Harry Chapin's song "30,000 Pounds Of Bananas" occurred. Eugene P Sesky was a truck driver for Fred Carpentier,who operated a truck line out of Scranton, Pennsylvania. Eugene was on his way back from the boat piers in Weehawken, New Jersey hauling 15 tons (30,000 pounds) of bananas. He was driving a 1950's Brockway diesel truck with a 35ft semi-trailer on his journey. His delivery was destined to go to the "wholesale block" on the Western edge of Lackawanna Avenue in Scranton, either to Halem Hazzouri Banana's or A&P Warehouse. He was headed down the section of Route 307 that contains a two mile descent starting at Lake Scranton and ending at the bottom of Moosic Street which has a drop in elevation of more than 500ft in less than 1-1/2 miles. While on the Route he was unable to control the speed of the truck due to a mechanical failure, either in the truck's brake system or its clutch. As a result of losing control of the truck, he was heading into Scranton at about 90mph. The truck sideswiped multiple cars and eventually crashed into a house at the corner of Moosic Street and South Irving Avenue towards the bottom of the hill. Witnesses claimed that he did everything he could to avoid hitting any pedestrians or other motorists. This included climbing out of the truck and onto its running board to attempt to warn people of the impending doom. Some people even say that he purposely flipped the truck over to avoid striking any people or the automotive service station on Moosic street that would have exploded into flames, had it been hit, killing many more people. Sesky was eventually thrown from the truck and killed instantly. The truck became disconnected from the trailer at some point and when things came to a rest there were bananas everywhere. The road was closed as Johnson's Towing Company helped in the recovery. A total of 15 people were injured in the accident, but only Sesky was killed. He was 35 years old and left behind a widow and children. As a result of this accident, trucks over 21,000lbs are no longer allowed to travel that route. Chapin wrote and composed "30,000 Pounds Of Bananas" less than ten years after Sesky's death. After being criticized for the song, Chapin said that he would donate proceeds from its royalties to the Sesky family, but they received no money. Instead, Chapin donated proceeds from the royalties to his campaign against hunger.
