COVID-19 in the Americas

Situation as of 1 April 2020 (14:00 EST)

In the Region of the Americas, the United States of America (US) continues to report majority of the cases (86%) and deaths (84%). In addition to New York City (41,771 cases and 1,096 deaths), other US cities experiencing a high growth rate include Detroit, Miami, and New Orleans. 

Brazil reported 1,138 additional cases in the last 24 hours for a 25% relative increase in cases compared to the previous day. Similarly, a 26% relative increase in deaths was reported (41 new deaths).

Argentina surpassed 1,000 cases in the past 24 hours and reported 10 cases classified as community transmission – accordingly, the country transmission status has been adjusted. 

PAHO Response Strategy and Donor Appeal

PAHO has launched an Appeal to donors & partners to scale-up the capacity of the countries of the Americas to respond to COVID-19. The response strategy outlined in this Appeal has two main objectives: slow down the transmission of the virus and mitigate the health impact of COVID-19 in the Region. 

An initial US$94.8 million are needed to support critical response efforts in countries most in need of help until September 2020. As this outbreak evolves, needs are likely to increase and the estimated financial requirements will be adjusted accordingly.

Critical preparedness, readiness and response actions

WHO has defined four transmission scenarios for COVID-19:

1. Countries with no cases (No cases);

2. Countries with 1 or more cases, imported or locally detected (Sporadic cases);

3. Countries experiencing cases clusters in time, geographic location and/or common exposure (Clusters of cases);

4. Countries experiencing larger outbreaks of local transmission (Community transmission).

This document describes the preparedness, readiness and response actions for COVID-19 for each transmission scenario.

Responding to community spread of COVID-19

This document provides technical guidance for government authorities, health workers, and other key stakeholders to guide response to community spread. It will be updated as new information or technical guidance become available. For countries that are already preparing or responding, this document can also serve as a checklist to identify any remaining gaps.
