The CBOE Volatility Index and its futures dropped again yesterday as equity indexes continued their march higher. The S&P 500 was up 14.59 points, or about 1 percent, to finish just shy of 1540--its highest close since November 2007. The index, which peaked above 1543 during the session, stayed in a tight range after the first 90 minutes. Resistance is at 1550, while the support should be at 1512 and then 1485. The Nasdaq 100 gained almost 40 points, or 1.44 percent, to 2799.25. That was just off its session high and was its highest close since Oct. 5. It has resistance at 2846 and support at 2700. The Russell 2000 was up nearly 11 points to finish at 927.40, just off the morning high. The small-cap index was unable to break above its Feb. 19 high at 932, which will also be resistance. Support is at 900. The VIX fell 0.53 points, or 3.78 percent, to 13.48. That was the volatility indexs lowest close since Feb. 19, when it was down near 12. The VIX futures were lower as well. The March futures lost 0.45 to finish at 14.55, while the April contracts fell 0.30 points to 15.55. The VIX options traded a relatively light 320,000 contracts, with calls outpacing puts by 2 to 1. But much of that action must have been selling, as the VVIX Index--which measures the implied volatility of those options--was down 3.6 percent to 79.32.
