METRO

Kyiv Metro was constructed in 1960. Now it has three lines and 52 stations. All lines cross together in the city center. One trip costs 8 hryvnias (not limited by time, crossings from line to line are free). Entering station’s vestibule, buy the QR-ticket at the cash desk or automate, or the universal transport card (Kyiv Smart City Card) -unlimited in time for 50 or less rides. Put on the QR-ticket or the plastic card to turnstile’s yellow panel. All announcements (both text and voice) in metro are in two languages – Ukrainian and English. You can see the metro map in high resolution here

KYIVPASTRANS

Kyivpastrans” (Kyiv Passengers’ Transportation) company is the main Kyiv's public transport operator. One trip in transport can cost 8-10 hryvnias. You can buy the ticket in ticket-offices located on several stops, but it is better to use a universal transport card (Kyiv Smart City Card). Please, be aware of controllers – they wear grey uniform and they do not sell tickets: they should control whether all the passengers have tickets and find those who have not. After buying the ticket, you must validate it with the manual. The fine for the ticketless fare is 160 hryvnias. Funicular is type of tram that has only two stations and travels by the hill from Poshtova Square to Mykhaylivska Square. It also costs 8 hryvnias (You should buy the token at the station). Light rail (or the rapid tram) is similar to tram, but more separate from road traffic, thus has the higher speed.

URBAN RAIL

Urban Rail or City Train (miska elektrychka) is the ring line system of trains. One ride costs 8 hryvnias, tickets are sold in the ticket-offices at the stations. It has big interval and operates only during rush hours.

MARSHRUTKA

Marshrutka's infrastructure is the most developed within Kyiv transport systems: it covers virtually all the city. Marshrutka is the type of transport typical for ex-Soviet countries – yellow-colored minibus for 30-40 people, that has “On demand” stops. To catch the marshrutka, standing on the stop, you should wave your hand. Entering, you should pay 8-12 hryvnias to the driver (or pass your money to the driver if you entered the back door). Driver must give you the change. To exit marshrutka you should ask driver about that in advance by the phrase “Na zupyntsi, bud laska” (Stop here, please).
