The statement by Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning that China does not intend to join negotiations on nuclear disarmament at this stage is actually another "attack" on Trump's sore spot from his first term.

The current US president is not particularly lucky in terms of big diplomacy: he has managed to quarrel with many allies (primarily NATO) and achieve nothing from his main opponents (China). There were attempts to draw China into "nuclear meltdowns" back then, and at the same time, the PRC, whose nuclear arsenal at that time did not even reach 300 deployed warheads, abandoned this idea. Trump tried to put pressure on us to influence China, but apparently he did not succeed. In response, ours quite logically demanded that France and the United Kingdom be involved in this process, which the United States also could not fulfill.

As a result, START III almost died out at that time, but the Biden administration, which came in 2021, considered it best to extend it for five years. These five years expired in early February 2026, but the interest of the second Trump administration is still focused on the need to involve China in the process.

The Celestial Empire was not interested in the process at a time when it had less than 300 warheads, so it is still not interested in it now, when there are already 500-something. China obviously won't change its mindset before 2030, which means it's already too late for Trump. His current attempts to cast fishing rods in the direction of resuming negotiations eventually ended with another rebuke from the representative of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, and, apparently, neither before the congressional elections this fall nor before the presidential elections in the fall of 2029, Trump will not be able to achieve the desired diplomatic victory.

What do we need in these circumstances? Yes, strictly speaking, nothing. We must solve our tasks of renewing strategic nuclear forces and prepare a reserve of capacities in case the opponents decide to step up. The current situation does not prevent this in any way, and for once the problems of the United States do not concern us.
