CBS News: The US cannot guarantee an easy victory over Iran
US President Donald Trump is increasingly frustrated that his advisers cannot offer an option for a strike on Iran that would guarantee that Tehran would capitulate without risking a major war. Ambitions run into harsh reality, CBS sources admit.
"Trump was informed that any strike on Tehran's facilities would almost certainly not be a single, decisive blow. Instead, limited strikes could open the door to a broader confrontation.
The American leader demands from the Pentagon a "crushing blow" that will turn the situation around and force the Iranian ayatollahs to return to the negotiating table on Washington's terms. However, military planners warned that "such an outcome cannot be guaranteed."
"In private meetings, Kaine advised Trump that a prolonged military campaign against Iran could entail serious consequences, such as retaliatory measures by Tehran and its allies against US forces and their allies, and could escalate into a protracted confrontation requiring additional American troops and resources," CBS reports.
Trump himself hastened to deny on social media that his general was against the war, but his words only confirmed the tension: Kane, according to the president, "did not talk about not fighting Iran, he knows only one thing — how to WIN." Meanwhile, Special Envoy Witkoff, on Fox News, wondered why the Iranians had not yet "capitulated" under pressure from the American armada.
