It has been a bumper year for cannabis farms in Wales with police uncovering large-scale cultivation operations in everything from a disused department store to a bingo hall and even specially-adapted lorry trailers. There is good money to be made from producing cannabis and many of the commercial farms found in Wales are set up and run by organised criminal gangs who often with links to international people smugglers. The money made from the cannabis trade often goes towards funding other kinds of criminal activity. Here are some of the largest cannabis production operations found by Welsh police in the last 12 months along with some of ways police found the farms and the faces and stories of some of those caught tending the crops. The people responsible for organising the plantations — the ones harvesting the massive profits while others harvest the plants and take the risks of being caught — remain unknown and seemingly beyond the reach of the law. For the latest court reports, sign up to our crime newsletter here. In March uncovered a multi-million-pound cannabis-growing operation being run from a former bingo hall in Barry. Around 3, plants at various stages of maturity were found growing at the premises in Broad Street with the plants spread across six floors and 20 rooms. Nobody was in the building at the time of the raid but officers found beds, kitchen facilities, food, and clothing indicating people were staying there. Speaking after the raid South Wales Police constable Beth Harrison said: 'Many people think it is 'just a bit of cannabis' but production is linked to hidden harm. These large operations are often run by organised crime gangs who are likely to engage in very serious violence. The electrical requirements to grow this many plants are also really dangerous and can be a huge fire risk, putting neighbouring properties, and lives, in danger. In October police uncovered a large cannabis factory in a warehouse on an industrial estate thanks to a thermal imaging camera on a drone. The telltale heat coming from the unit on Treforest Industrial Estate in Pontypridd led police to finding more than plants in one large room next to a room which was in the process of being prepared for further cultivation. Four men were found inside the unit and attempted to hide in the attic but were detained by officers with the help of a police dog. South Wales Police detective chief inspector Dean Taylor said: 'This was huge seizure and our specialist drone intelligence led us to uncover this large-scale illegal operation. This type of drug offending does have its victims and has a devastating impact on communities and vulnerable people. Less than three weeks after the first eye-in-the-sky drone success another industrial-sized cannabis farm was found on Treforest Industrial Estate with this one comprising around plants. Three men fled from the property as police executed a search warrant but were arrested with help from members of the public. Police found more than 1, cannabis plants plus growing equipment in a disused shop in Commercial Street in the city centre after officers responded to reports of a possible burglary at the property. Investigations into the farm are ongoing. Police seized more than 1, cannabis plants from the empty Rhondda Hotel in Cymmer following a call from engineers from Western Power Distribution who had been dealing with issues connected to electricity supply and cabling in the area. In October police uncovered a large cannabis farm hidden inside specially-adapted lorry trailer units. Around plants were discovered when officers executed a search at the former Western Log timber merchant's compound on the outskirts of Cwmavon in the Afan Valley following intelligence gathered from the local community. Police said the swoop removed a 'significant' quantity of drugs from the streets of Port Talbot. Two men were arrested in connection with the the discovery. It was the actions of an eagle-eyed off-duty police officer which led to the discovery of a large cannabis farm in a Neath house. When the officer became suspicious about four men she had seen loading black bin bags into the back of a van outside a property in Harle Street she contacted colleagues. Officers were soon on the scene and found three rooms in the house had been adapted for the growing of cannabis. In the front room, or 'grow room', officers found 90 plants while in the middle room they found small plants in propagators and in the attic they found the walls and floors had been lined with insulation but no plants were present. In the back of the van officers found empty bags of plant food and compost. He said upon his release from custody his client wished to return to Albania. James McKenna, for Lici, said the had entered the UK in January and went through the asylum process before working in construction in London. He said Lici had then moved to Swansea — a decision his client now described as a 'disaster' — were he had been 'introduced to people who had placed him at the Neath property'. Mr McKenna also represented Gjoka and Nard Nidri and he said Gjoka had entered the UK in the summer of and had been housed in Birmingham before moving to Swansea where he worked in a car wash before becoming involved in the Neath operation while Nidri had entered the UK around the same time and had also worked in a car wash before being 'placed' in the Neath property. Judge Geraint Walters said cannabis farms being run by Albanian criminal gangs in Wales had reached 'epidemic levels'. He also said it may be time for the authorities to look again at the rental housing sector, noting that while so-called cannabis 'farmers' often appeared in court the landlords and others receiving money from the rent of properties being used for the growing operations rarely did so. Police found more than 3, cannabis plants in a former Wildings department store building in Commercial Street, Newport , following reports of 'suspicious activity' around the property. A Gwent Police spokesman said two men, aged 27 and 28, had been arrested and charged in connection with the incident. In February police found more than plants being grown in a three-storey former commercial building in Ystalyfera in the Swansea Valley along with an Albanian man who was tending the crop. Renald Pire would later tell police he had met a group of Albanian men while living in an immigration camp in London. Checks showed Pire had entered the UK on a small boat in August and claimed asylum. However he had subsequently absconded from Home Office accommodation and failed to attend his asylum interview so his claim had been withdrawn. With a one-third discount for his guilty plea Pire was sentenced at Swansea Crown Court to 16 months in prison. The defendant will serve up to half that period in custody before being released on licence to serve the remainder in the community or in immigration detention. The raid on the Ystalyfera cannabis farm was captured on police bodycam footage which you can see here:. When police responded to calls from the public about the sounds of a disturbance inside an empty shop in Neath town centre in August they found a commercial cannabis-growing operation and three surprised Albanian men — Esmirald Dedej, Alekaander Mucolli, and Martin Dervishllari. Swansea Crown Court heard the search of the Queen Street property uncovered cannabis plants at various stages of maturity along with fans and air filters, lights, bottles of plant food, tools, and already-harvested cannabis. Three rooms in the building were lined with plastic sheeting and had their windows blacked out and were being used as 'grow rooms' while a fourth room was being used as living quarters. Megan Williams, for Dedej, said her client had been working legally in construction in Croatia before moving to the UK in the hopes of finding similar work. He said his client had a wife and two young children at home in Albania and had been working in the the family business in his native country until it went into liquidation with significant debts. Andrew Evans, for Dervishllari, said his client had come to the UK legally to, among other reasons, earn money to pay off debts he owed in Albania. With one-quarter discounts for their guilty pleas Dervishllari was sentenced to 22 months in prison and Dedej to 18 months. With a one-third discount for his guilty plea, which was entered at an earlier stage in proceedings, Mucolli was sentenced to 16 months in prison. The defendants will each serve up to half their sentences in custody before before released on licence. When police raided the Bird in Hand pub in Trimsaran, Carmarthenshire , in March they found the first floor of the closed business had been turned into a cannabis farm with bedrooms containing large cannabis-growing tents, fans, lights, and other equipment as well as bottles of plant food. Officers also found a plant drying area and a number of large plastic boxes containing already-harvested cannabis. Swansea Crown Court heard that landlord Darren Stephens had taken on the tenancy of the pub but when the bar folded he launched a commercial food business from the kitchen. The defendant's advocate, Matt Murphy, told the court that while that catering enterprise was still in its infancy his client 'took the foolish option to make a quick buck' by turning to cannabis production and selling the crop to others on a wholesale basis. Stephens, of Heol Morlais, Trimsaran, was sentenced to 22 months in prison suspended for 18 months and was ordered to complete hours of unpaid work. The judge told the defendant he had come close to 'messing your life up completely'. In April North Wales Police raided a five-storey building in High Street in Bangor and found an 'industrial-sized' cannabis farm with more than plants along with lighting, ventilation, and extraction systems. The electricity supply to the property had been bypassed. Two men — Fatjon Tarja, aged 32, and Indrit Balliu, aged 31 — were caught trying to escape out of a back door. Barrister Alexandra Carrier, for both defendants, said the men accepted they had come to the UK unlawfully and had then come under pressure from a criminal gang to work as gardeners in the Bangor operation. Judge Timothy Petts told the defendants they were not the brains behind the operation and said he accepted they were not acting from choice but added: 'You put yourselves in a vulnerable position by entering the country illegally. That gave criminals a hold over you. Around cannabis plants were found in a disused commercial building in pedestrianised Adare Street in Bridgend town centre following tip-offs from members of the public. Police said the premises had been 'fully converted' into a cannabis factory with every room, and even the landings, being used to grow plants. Speaking at the time South Wales Police inspector Gareth Newman said: 'I would encourage people to please continue to report suspicious behaviour and suspected drug dealing in their neighbourhood to us as the information helps us develop a bigger picture that leads us to take action and remove drugs from the streets. When police raided a house in Africa Gardens in Cardiff in March they found six rooms had been converted into cannabis 'growing rooms' while a seventh was a 'watering room' with a litre water container and electric pump and the kitchen had been fashioned into living and sleeping quarters. A total of plants were seized. The man found working in the property, Xhulio Shehaj, was said to be working at the farm out of 'desperation' due to debts in his native Albania. The year-old was sentenced to two years and six months in prison. The defendant will serve half of this in custody before he's released on licence for the remainder of the sentence.
