A little worried about how the car would manage with two hills to climb. Got home OK with just one fishtailing moment on a road with a slight camber Had me pooping myself for a second. The road I live on is a hill that my previous car could not make, Glad for the 4wheel drive in this car, got up it slow and easy. Chrishazle MB Enthusiast. Quite often in slippy conditions it's softly softly catchee monkey!! I finally , after two years long story got four new alloys and four new Michelin crossclimates fitted last week and even with 4matic I'm in no hurry to try them out. After getting stuck properly stuck once it becomes an easy decision. I had a Bmw E39 iat on a P reg. Had the car near on 10 years. Purchased a set of winter tyres halfway through my ownership. That car has now gone to the car god's. It was a pleasure to own. Engine wise bullet proof but other components let it down and repairing out cost it's life unfortunately. Best option mod to put to a car for winter month driving. It was an old car of not great value, it was my only car the the time also. I keep meaning to put a winter set of tyres on my second set of wheels I bought brand new for my now sold e I have had the wheels on my E63 but I'm not so confident that winter tyres can be as pro active on a plus bhp vehicle as a bhp estate vehicle. The 63 is a rear tyre slider in damp weather on good tread near on new continental tyres. I definitely will be better prepared next winter season. I'll probably buy a winter set just after this season ends to get a better deal possibly. I suppose they would work just as fantastic on the 63 but still just coax it along in extreme conditions. I tend not to take the 63 out in low temperature weather at all and definitely wouldn't dream of taking it out in this snow we have had down south at present. Can any none winter tyre guys comment on if you have had trouble with the conditions of late. Also can any winter tyre owners give there views on having winter Tyres on a MB and how it performs? Last edited: Feb 10, Forgot to add, never ever got stuck with the winter tyres, and went out every season we had snow and icey conditions. Remember once we went along a country rd near to a lovely local park. And we come across this fantastic looking herd of wild Dear, we just sat there in amazement. If we had normal tyres on we probably would never have seen them. Purchased asst of winter tyres halfway through my ownership. Just winter tyres. The car seems to perform amazingly well. And for a big est. Did you get many seasons from your winter tyres. So 4th Winter now. Tuercas viejas MB Enthusiast. We have a bad weather front on the way at the moment with the Canadian clipper blasting down the Front Range of the Rockies. Here's some typical shots of weather events and outside Laramie, the winds will blow a car off the road. Deleted member Guest. I'm currently in Norway where the roads are constantly ice and snow, not a thin layer but about 3 inches thick and the temperature never gets above -8c. Everyone has winter tyres and most with the spikes. You wouldn't know there was anything different, all manner of cars driving normally at normal speeds. One year when we were here one car had to put the normal tyres on as it got a puncture, the difference is night and day. Last night me and my colleague were laughing as we tried to keep up with a truck going kmh in c on thick icy roads!! It still amazes us how much the tyres do. This is normally over here When you get out of the car you struggle to stand up on the road as its that icy! Darrell Hardcore MB Enthusiast. Cabriomat said:. See this link for probably one of the luckiest people for this year so far Joined Nov 11, Messages 11, Location Petrol stations That is one lucky escape. Was in Ruka, Finland, a couple years back and all the vehicles had studded and none studded winter tyres. The coach we traveled on during day trips and evening, didn't miss a beat, I was quite remarkable how them big vehicles go about there business. Many hills and inclines driven with ease. But they can only be a positive surely. You must log in or register to reply here. Users who are viewing this thread. Total: 1 members: 0, guests: 1. Similar threads. My 3 years with a BMW is coming to an end and I have enjoyed all my time with it apart from when it snows as it's handling is appalling in the snow and ice. On any car decent tyres and driving technique are more important than how many wheels are driven. If the ML has road tyres with 3mm on each corner it will handle no better than your BMW - stopping could also prove very interesting. Alex M Grieve Senior Member. I fitted snow tyres to my E Auto and the grip on ice going downhill is astonishing. However as has been said, driving style is critical. Worlds End Stu Senior Member. For what it's worth I used to live in Southern Germany and we used to get some pretty brutal winters. Everyone used to put winter tyres on come November and this allowed even the mental E class taxi drivers still still drive like nutters in the snow and ice. I've had a Range Rover sliding around on normal tyres in these conditions where my with winter tyres was like it was on rails. I cannot over emphasise what a difference good winter tyres can make. Trouble with England is not many people bother with winter tyres so even if you can move safely there's always a risk you'll get stuck behind someone else. Or worse still they slide into you! When the weather conditions get too bad in this country I leave my Merc in the garage and I have an old and worthless but highly reliable Toyota RAV4 I bring out as I don't mind so much if that ends up getting dented. Thincat Senior Member. I can't comment on the ML since I have never driven one. However, 4 wheel drive is better than 2 wheel drive in slippery conditions for obvious reasons. Front wheel drive is better than rear wheel drive so the 2 wheel drive Mercs and BMWs particularly the Mercs are very difficult in snow unless fitted with special tyres. Another factor to bear in mind is the traction control. One reason why my SLk is so completely useless in snow is the fact that the traction control cuts in to prevent the wheels spinning, so you often end up with 1 wheel drive or no wheel drive - and turning ESP off doesn't seem to help. I guess the ML will have more sophisticated forms of TC so that the electronic aids can be configured for snow, mud, gravel etc - or at least allow you to turn it off. But I'm not sure I would be going for a Merc if I were looking for a car that works in snow. When I complained to them about how bad my car is in snow they just said I should put on winter tyres, so basically MB don't seem to think that a car should be drivable on normal tyres in snow - which doesn't bode well for the ML. I tried the Tesco Test in the R Class last winter. Normal tyres. About 5 mm tread all round. Large empty car park, 6' of fresh unbroken snow. Stopped the car, then floored the throttle - ESP light blinked momentarily, then the car accelerated away in a dignified controlled manner. I tried this in the straight ahead position, then on each lock - always with the same result. There are lots of types of 4 x 4s, some with high and low ratio, some with locking differentials, but for road use in real world conditions, the 4Matic system seems to do the job. Also worked perfectly on a steep wet grassy bank around Easter Time. Down hill on ice is a no no for anything other than tracked, 4x4's are uncontrollable on ice; low ratio, locking diffs will not save you. The important question is how steep is your driveway are are you prepared to clear it properly before you set off. If you do these things you will probably get away with winter tyres. They have a real advantage on rough ground, where there are clearance issues and for towing and they also have better visibility. Conversely they do not handle as well or are as economical to run as a normal sized car. Ian J said:. Your Mercedes W Ecdi. Mmmm keeping thinking about an Audi A6 3. On rough lumpy ground, sand, snow and mud it will be better than a car but generally worse on a road in the wet or dry. Try before you buy, you might like one; but don't buy for the wrong reasons. In a way they are a bit like convertibles, in that Britain has the wrong climate for them but in the right circumstances they are perfect. From what you're all saying there doesn't seem to be much point in buying one then so now I'll turn my attention to my first love which is a Maserati which also won't be much good in the snow. Thanks all as you've stopped me from making a mistake. First off, I'm biased.. Winter tyres. I'm converted. Amazing difference. But in the real world. The problems I've found C coupe cdi is ground clearance. This is where a 4x4 is actually going to help. Up in Aberdeen, with the winter tyres, I've never been stuck. The difference is stunning. The only time I got close, was the work car park and being gungho and first Man in one early morning. I was warned, but 'Ahh no worries I've got winter tyres! Effectively I got grounded on the snow, with the car lifting on a snow bank. A bit of careful rocking, and throttle control, then.. No need for a push.. Unlike the front wheel drives. I'd consider a 4x4, but only with that in mind. Its more able to clear the frozen lumps and bumps bigger diameter wheels and suspension travel. Once you're on the slushy, snowy, sort of cleared roads, I cant see it being any better. And possibly worse given its 2 tonnes with high centre of gravity. You must log in or register to reply here.
