As the seasons change, so do we. SALT students are at the halfway point in the Spring semester. So far it has flown by, and the weeks ahead are filled with travel plans. In just over a week we will be leaving for Russia, which just means we have to accept every opportunity to experience Lithuania, its people, and its culture while we can. Similar to Mardi Gras, it takes place on the weekend before Ash Wednesday, but has deep pagan roots and is one of the oldest known festivals of its kind in Europe. They celebrated the noisy excitement of spring that is coming. I was struck by the joy on the faces all around me. The joy in changing seasons from the cold, dark and quiet of winter to the warmth, light and colors of spring is something we all have in common. I went with three other study abroads, and our first accomplishment was getting there without using the Traffi app for bus directions. As we walked towards Revival Square, we were greeted by the now familiar sight of tents used for market days. We immediately saw the delights that awaited us, like kepta duona and waffles dipped in chocolate and other toppings. But we refrained for the moment, and walked on to the main part of the square. The Lithuanians mark the change in seasons using fire. The large straw figure drew most of our attention as we approached. We were also entranced by the intricate masks and costumes people were wearing. As I learned later, typical masks in Lithuania are wooden and handmade to depict both joyful and frightening characters. Despite the distractions, we made it to the straw lady and took in the sights. It was larger than I expected, and reminiscent of a Viking woman. Eventually, we moved on to the rest of the square. The theme for this year, recycling, was immediately apparent. Booths included information about climate change, environmental pollution, and waste management, specifically recycling. Participants dressed up as witches, devils, horses, goats, foreigners, doctors, brides, and many other characters. But the best part of the day was standing with the crowd of Lithuanians, seeing the delight and expectation on every face as the spark caught and the straw began to burn. I saw children and adults alike dancing both alone and together. There was such a sense of community and celebration in the air. It was a time of expectation and acknowledgement of the change that is coming. I am more excited than ever for the rest of our time in Lithuania as we prepare to welcome spring and step into the second half of our lives here. When you live in a place for all or most of your life, you take it for granted. Being here in Klaipeda amplifies the feelings of too much to do and not enough time. I have four months here, and then I may never be back. But I hope I will be! Having a time limit here means I want to do everything I can. This past weekend was the perfect opportunity to see Klaipeda in a way that not many do. It drew thousands of citizens and tourists who came out to see the gorgeous light installations all over the city. The weekend was doubly special for me because I celebrated my 21st birthday and my best friend since third grade, who is studying in London this semester, flew into Lithuania to spend it with me. While I showed her my favorite places, I also wanted to take advantage of the opportunities around us. I want to see everything and do everything that I can while here in Lithuania with access to the rest of Europe. After an afternoon on the beach and a fancy dinner on Friday, we spent Saturday adventuring. Instead, we followed directions to reach the Glowing Hill of Legends, a special project for the Festival but not located in Old Town. The walking paths were lit by neon lights alongside wooden sculptures, some of which have rested there for 41 years. The atmosphere was a strange mix of warmth, with families wandering, as well as a sense of timelessness and magic as we stared into the dark forest. We retraced our steps and reached the mainland with plenty of time left to explore Old Town. We ate hot, fresh spurgytes small fried dough balls and basked in the wonder of the lights. A friend and I went right before our Russia trip over Spring Break to treat ourselves to some pampering after midterms. The staff is extremely nice and they do a wonderful job. Not only are they fun for hanging out with friends, but these festivals can teach you more about Lithuanian culture and about living locally in Klaipeda. Looking back on this past month, I have definitely made some of my favorite memories of my time here in Klaipeda so far. I love being with people who live here and experiencing the events that they enjoy. When we arrived in Palanga, there were vendors lined up the street and down the boardwalk. So many people were out, buying local products like honey, bread, meats, and of course, fish. This is a great opportunity to try out some local Lithuanian goods and even buy some to take home with you at the end of the semester. However, Lithuanians became resilient and illegally distributed books in order to preserve their language. Aother Independence movement emerged, and with huge gatherings and the Singing Revolution, Lithuania declared independence in There are so many coffee shops, ships, old buildings, and sculptures. One day, I plan on walking around Klaipeda to find hopefully all of the sculptures. There are also different events that happen in Old Town like the Festival of Lights and even some of the Independence Day celebrations. Old Town is a great place to walk around, have some coffee, talk, or even journal. The Food- So, basically, my favorite food here is Kepta Duona! I saw previous study abroad students post about it, and the hype was well worth it! Some other favorites include potato pancakes, cepelina, kebabas and kibinai. I have had many different off road vehicles such as ATVs and UTVs but these are just too costly to buy, keep running and store in limited space. You have made my dream come true. I bought the Standard B13ME model. I needed a mule to do the heavy work and I sure did get it. It works on land, snow and frozen lakes and much better than I expected. It gave me life on days when I normally just sit home wishing I could be fishing or hunting but my younger friends who do the heavy lifting and pulling are at work. I think of the Snowdog as a tool and not a toy. My first adventure was to my favorite ice fishing lake. It was 8 inches of clear black and very slippery ice with absolutely no snow. I was worried about getting on the lake and not being able to go without a studded track. WOW was I completely surprised when the dog just walked all over the lake pulling my sled shanty with at least pounds of gear and almost no traction issues at all. The only place I had any problem was getting off the flat ice and up the very icy launch ramp, studs would have been good there. My next trip was to the same lake but now it had 6 inches of fresh snow on top. The dog was even better on the snow covered ice and went right up the ramp pulling all my gear and never even worked hard. I took my sled shanty plus two of my pals' sled shanties towed behind and I bet the load was well over pounds. Again the dog just went like a locomotive pulling a heavy train. My buddies laughed saying no way and then they got amazed and thrilled. I had to see how it would do going through the woods behind my house to my deer stand. Now I will have no such problem and wish I bought it sooner. As a real bonus, my younger buddies still like to go fast and play once we get set up fishing, and they all had a blast taking turns buzzing around the lake while I caught dinner. It is a new product category in a market that sees very few new ideas. No need for a trailer because the Snowdog fits in the back of a SUV. It is safe, simple to operate, easy to maintain and fun to ride. The potential market is huge! The Snowdog appeals to ice fishermen, hunters, campers, cabin owners and nature lovers. We believe it will be a big addition to our sales this year and in the years to come! Tried with a regular snowmobile- couldn't keep up enough speed to keep it from bogging down and it was unable to reach even half the trails, used a Rokon 2 wheel drive off road utility bike, it had the power and maneuverability, but when trying to tow a drag and the small footprint of the tires, it was not worth the effort. Then I went back to a snowmobile: smaller, shorter, but still had trouble even reaching half the trails. It worked, could reach about half of my trails, but still not good enough. I had been looking at track sled videos in Russian for the last few years, even tried to get a local guy to rig one up for me, but no luck. What I like about it- it's simple, well thought out, the pull and electric start, the way the handlebars can be adjusted, it's weight allows for it to be moved easily either on the trail or in the garage. I store it right in my truck bed, so when Winter drops another inches I can hop on the grooming effort. It's nice that it's a tried and true engine, and the design is well thought out, I've been able to groom sideslope trails, and the learning curve for operation is rather short. After minutes you can move about the trails quite well. Only suggestions I can give is a higher setting for the handlebars, it would be more comfortable for myself if they were about 4 inches higher. Everything else is great, it's stable, the center of gravity is what it is, i've tipped it a few times and the engine cuts out due to the oil, but that is planned safety, so no issues, once I get it upright, it starts within seconds. It has exceeded every expectation that we had! We are devoted ice fisherman and the Snowdog is now a key part in our everyday fishing. Pulling a couple hundred pounds of fishing equipment by hand is not easy or fun With it being able to pull several ice shanties and several people over lbs , we can enjoy the trip out each time. The Snowdog has also helped us reach places that we could not before. With the studded track on this machine, we have been able to travel across large snow covered lakes or just the slick ice without snow and also reach lakes surrounded by steep hills with ease! We are able to go wherever we want thanks to our Snowdog. With it being so simple and safe to operate, the entire family can enjoy it as well! We load up the Snowdog right into our Hitch Hauler on the truck, which makes an easy trip without the hassle of a trailer. We would highly recommend a Snowdog to any outdoors enthusiast. If the snow is ft, I may have to ride light first, and then take a heavy cargo with me on the well-trodden path. When I go fishing I usually take a can of gas with me just in case. With cruising speed at mph I can get around pretty fast. And what is more, Snowdog is a perfect machine for family fun. Last winter, thanks to Snowdog, me, my friends and our families had a blast spending time outside. One time we connected 13 children sleds together behind motor tow, and were riding in circles on ice. Kids were so happy! That is a huge benefit because for snowmobile I would have to buy a trailer, as for Snowdog my friend and I easily lift it up and put it in the trunk. I decided to buy it for few reasons: small size, it is very convenient to store and transport; easy maintenance. Mine is Snowdog Compact. Especially after driving a snowmobile. Impressions of the first trips are wonderful! I am a hunter, and for me it is very important that the sleds can ride well in any forest. Also pleased with a small gas consumption. Since we live far away from the city and the roads, surrounded by woods and fields, we figured we needed help in organising the training of our team of dogs.
