A struggle to finish this one, good characterisation, but not a lot of plot. This book started very gently introducing us to a delightful young girl with fascinating details of her seemingly privileged life. As we read on we begin to realise that in spite of having all that money can buy she does not have peace of mind as her loving, kind mother is deeply troubled. The book is beautifully written, and gives us a poignant insight into how it affects all those around her. It was often very funny capturing the world of children at that time beautifully. Well crafted, the mixture of sweet innocence and drama brilliantly interwoven. From a gentle beginning I was totally swept along and could not put the book down. I started it over breakfast, had to hide it from myself to do some important work, then picked it up after dinner and finished it in bed. I really hope there will be a sequel. A lovely book, which rolls along happily but no great surprises or twists. Lovely story, enjoyed reading it! One of the books that make you care about the characters and was sad when I came to the end. A really weird story. Too many very strange characters, and fox hunting is totally glorified. Vacheron Constantin have cemented their position in the Holy Trinity as the kings of the understated, as even the most complicated, precious-metal clad watches in their catalogue tend to be kind of restrained. That being the case, I wonder what prompted them to take their most conservative collection — the mid-century modern-inspired Patrimony — and bling out its 37mm case with nearly six carats of diamonds. Befittingly named the Patrimony Self-winding Jewellery, this Vacheron Constantin flipped my expectations upside down. Dressy, gem-set watches are nothing new, especially in smaller sizes, but there are few so concerned with classicism as the Patrimony that also sport a snow-set diamond dial. Apart from the gem-setting, the rest of the dial is classic Patrimony, with tooth-like indices at the cardinal points complemented by stick ones elsewhere. The 18k white gold case and round-cut diamonds more than make up for it. The most toned-down aspect of the Patrimony Jewellery is the square-scale alligator leather strap. Considering that Vacheron Constantin have surely satisfied the proper, stiff-upper-lip-collector with their other models, why not have something so outlandish? Hands On.
