Caravanistan A Silk Road travel forum Skip to content. Quick links. Would this be the better route version for the return journey anyway? Anyone have experiences on driving in one of those or both regions in winter? Any special safety tips from locals to survive when getting stuck in a snowstorm while driving through lonesome Kazakhstan deserts? Could we have problems with closed border crossings around Andijan, maybe open only a few days a week around new year or closed on holidays, maybe even problems between KZ and UZ on Jan 1st? The road is fine when you reach Kyzyl Orda all the way to Almaty, but between Aqtobe and Kyzyl Orda, the road is really bad and very desolate. If you get stuck, it gets very very dangerous and people die every year from the cold in Kazakhstan. There are no special safety tips other than: do not drive in a snow storm. There is also really good freeriding in Kazakhstan around Shymkent, just that no one knows about it yet. If you inform yourself in advance I don't see an issue with the Osh-Bishkek road. Borders are open year-round, also during holidays. Look forward to your report! If you like Caravanistan: we have opened a tip jar! We love you back! Excellent quality tarmac. Aqtobe — Aralsk via E Excellent quality tarmac. The E38 road is good. My mistake. So I have to retract my words here. You can go via Aqtobe. I am not sure where you are more likely to hit a snow storm. Could happen anywhere I guess. Aqtobe-Aralsk sees less traffic, but with the new road and petrol stations along the way, it is a lot better than it used to be. So please disregard my previous entry. No difference between the northern and the western entry in terms of road quality. Not that much in terms of weather either I think. But this thread interests me because we are also driving in winter January through this region Tehran to Almaty Looking at the most straightforward route Mary- Bukhara- Samarkand - Shymkent - Almaty. Some questions: 1. What are the probabilities of getting caught in a snow storm? How fast do the roads clear of snow after a snow storm? Is it indispensable to have winter tyres for a trip on this route in January? Separately although not planned maybe I could take in some skiing with ski lifts , how much of a detour would that be from my route? On another thread I read that maybe horse riding in Almaty in winter was possible? Any tips? Just look at the weather forecast and ask locals. But on your route I think chances are quite low. Only Shymkent-Almaty has some dangerous steppe areas where winds can be very strong. Those are the dangerous bits. Pretty quickly in the cities and around. In other places, often they don't. Locals know how to drive on snow. Yes 4. No detour at all. There are ski resorts near Tashkent and Almaty. I can't help with horse riding in winter. Anything is possible, sure. I just don't know anyone who can organise it. If you find someone, let me know. I would be interested. I had one bad experience with my Land Rover in the Karoo South Africa one winter with a freak snow storm when I had no winter tyres but then no-one else does either. Next day things cleared up and snow melted. And all was ok again. Is this not a reasonable approach? A few specific questions: 1. Do all or the vast majority of locals drive with snow tyres? If that is the case, presumably I could buy winter tyres in, say, Bukhara? But I would have my summer tyres as well! Could carry them on the roof I guess. Maybe I could take chains along as a precaution? Thanks for any feedback! You probably know better than me, I really know very little about cars. Just never heard of anyone driving in winter in Kazakhstan without winter tyres. But perhaps in Uzbekistan people do it. Perhaps get some info on the HUBB forum regarding this question, that's where the experts live. And then report back please! It is illegal to drive with summer tyres in winter, at least in Kazakhstan. Go further, go slower. Experience more. Visa invitation letters Kazakhstan Pakistan Russia tourist Russia business.
